QB Survivor: We have our first player to leave the game
And then there were 23...
There is no more disappointing way to end your Survivor run than being taken away by the medical team. Though it doesn’t happen every season, it is a statistical certainty that at least one of the many Survivor contestants who have had to leave for medical reasons would have come away with the $1 million if not for getting injured.
Will that be the case for Jake Haener?
As previously mentioned, the circumstances that lead to being eliminated from contention as the next Seahawks QBOTF are as simple as the sport of competition itself: Wins and Losses.
We have four tribes of six quarterbacks—the Leaders, the Traits, the Hype, and the Underdogs—and each week I will be tallying up their wins and losses as the first hurdle towards being sent to tribal council and sending one cast member into the transfer portal. The first week of elimination results gave us a clear winning tribe (and I’m delighted to say that it was the team of underdogs because that makes for great television newsletter) and then the other three were more closely bunched together.
The Hype Tribe had two players on a bye and went 3-1; the Traits went 4-2; the Leaders went 3-2 but both losses came to somebody else in the same tribe.
It would be feasible for me to say that the Leaders were practically 3-0 because of this fact—two quarterbacks had to lose—but all of my tiebreakers still favored sending the Leaders to tribal council.
They didn’t win as many games as Traits, they lose more games than Hype, and the one player who didn’t suit up because of injury still watched his team lose last week, like Paul Walker in the final game of Varsity Blues. And besides, Jake Haener gave enough reason for me to consider doing the hardest part of Jeff Probst’s job:
Telling a cast member that they have no choice but to leave the game for medical reasons.
Haener was the last player voted into the game. He has one of the weakest resumes of any of the 24 quarterbacks in contention to be an NFL starter—even if he has a very strong college resume to flaunt to friends and strangers in the future when his career is over to say, “I once beat UCLA with 455 passing yards.” He’s undersized, turnover prone, a transfer before transferring was so cool, a fifth-year senior, and now unfortunately, injured.
Meaning he won’t get to even play in one game before being eliminated from QB Survivor 2023. There won’t be any vote required this week because the choice for elimination is so obvious.
Jake Haener, please bring me your football.
You are the first player eliminated from QB Survivor. Now enter the transfer portal.
I will remember you…
Will you remember me…
Don’t let your life, pass you by… wait not for the memories…
Here’s what else happened in QB Survivor this week. Thank you to Coach Doug for helping keep track of each QB stats week-to-week in a spreadsheet were are currently sharing!

Leaders (3-2):
L - Penix to UCLA (33/48, 7.2 Y/A, 4 TD, 2 INT)
W - DTR over UW (24/33, 9.5 Y/A, 3 TD, 0 INT, 1 rush TD)
W - Uiagalelei over NC State (21/30, 7 Y/A, 1 TD, 0 INT, 2 rush TD)
L - Leary to Clemson (28/47, 5.2 Y/A, 1 TD/1 INT)
W - Rogers over Texas A&M (31/45, 7.3 Y/A, 3 TD, 0 INT)
N/A - Haener (INJ) (FRESNO STATE LOST)
Leaders Player of the Week: Dorian Thompson-Robinson
Interceptions were an issue for Penix at Indiana, will he be able to avoid at Washington? Thompson-Robinson and Will Rogers both had good games and D.J. Uiagalelei continues to rebuild his pre-Clemson hype and might end up as one of the top-ranked prospects in the 2023 class when it’s all said and done.
Underdogs (5-1):
W - Bennett over Missouri (24/44, 7.1 Y/A, 0 TD)
L - Gabriel to TCU (7/16, 7.9 Y/A, 0 TD)
W - Hartman over Florida State (22/34, 6.9 Y/A, 2 TD, 0 INT)
W - Daniels over Iowa State (7/14, 6.6 Y/A, 1 rush TD)
W - McCall over Georgia Southern (23/34, 9.9 Y/A, 3 TD, 0 INT, 1 rush TD)
W - Ward over Cal (27/40, 8.6 Y/A, 3 TD, 2 INT)
Underdog Player of the Week: Grayson McCall
No bias: McCall was amazing this week. I have watched every Coastal Carolina game since 2020 and I can assure you that he has never been surrounded with less talent on that roster than right now. I believe CCU would be 0-5 without him, but they are the only 5-0 team among G5 schools directly because of him. He led three touchdown drives in the fourth quarter and Coastal needed all of them. He did it with his arm. He’s incredibly smart with the football. He’s 25-2 as a starter and I’ve never seen him have a bad game. No bias. My prediction has been and continues to be that McCall will not start to get that draft buzz from others until he gets to the Senior Bowl, a week that he should dominate.
I’m still also very impressed with Sam Hartman and Cameron Ward. Dillon Gabriel was injured and is questionable for next week.
Traits (4-2):
W - Jaren Hall over Utah State (17/27, 10.1 Y/A, 3 TD, 0 INT)
W -Stroud over Rutgers (13/22, 7 Y/A, 2 TD, 1 INT)
L - Levis to Ole Miss (18/24, 9.2 Y/A, 2 TD, 0 INT)
L - McKee to Oregon (19/33, 5 Y/A, 2 TD, 0 INT)
W - Shrader over Wagner (17/17, 14 Y/A, 2 TD, 0 INT, 1 rush TD)
W - Richardson over EWU (8/10, 24 Y/A, 2 TD, 1 INT)
Traits Player of the Week: Jaren Hall
Hall could be the fastest riser in the class. He’s got almost no bad marks on his resume, it’s just that it took him five years to become the starter. He’s a dynamic dual threat and a team could very well take him in the first round.
Shrader did go 17-of-17 but playing against Wagner was not a real game: The two teams agreed to shorten the second half from 30 minutes to 20 minutes just to get it over with.
Not especially impressive outings for C.J. Stroud or Tanner McKee this week.
Hype (3-1):
W - Bryce Young over Arkansas (7/13, 13.3 Y/A, 1 TD/1 INT, 1 rush TD)
L - K.J. Jefferson to Alabama (13/24, 6.5 Y/A, 1 TD, 0 INT)
W - Rising over Oregon State (19/25, 8 Y/A, 3 TD, 0 INT, 1 rush TD)
W - Tagovailoa over Michigan State (32/41, 7.7 Y/A, 1 TD, 0 INT)
BYE - TVD, Hooker
Hype Player of the Week: Cameron Rising
Crising is Rising. He narrowly edges out Taulia Tagovailoa (win over a top-15 team) for player of the week. Bryce Young left with a shoulder injury but is expected to recover soon. Which QB in Alabama-Arkansas do you prefer for the Seahawks? Let me know in the comments! And give Jake Haener some parting words.
I still don't know enough to comment I have only watched one episode of survivor, Jimmy Johnson haha.
I will say a great picture of DTR jumping over a defender, I will look that up, and his side step TD highlight.
I am all aboard with you on Grayson McCall. From what I can tell he is the point gaurd Pete Carroll is looking for. My only concern is his weight. Having said that, he probably has 5 % body fat and played many sports. The more sports you play the more your body and mind can respond.
The McCall watch is very exciting thanks for making us aware, Kenneth !!!
Jake, we hardly knew you! "Please bring me your football..." :D.
Ok, Moxy McCall ("you've got Moxy, kid) did impress the heck out of me. CCU was down to a 13% win probablility in the 4th Q before he started the comeback. He made some great throws under pressure and has that "it" factor. It will be tough to take the football away from him.
This is going to be fun!!
