Quite the exercise. What it reminded me of is that even in the first round, the draft is a crapshoot.

Off the top of my head... James Carpenter, Jarran Reed, Jesse Williams...some wide receiver? Kevin Norwood?

OMG. The amount of effort you put in SSJ is astronomical. Thank you.

I am only a little disappointed that, like everyone, everywhere, Nix gets a mention, but isn’t really talked about. I want to know why he’s just the other guy that’s in the mix, but no one wants to talk about why. As I’ve said before, and I’m probably wrong as I don’t have the insightful knowledge of others, IMHO he’s the pick of the QB’s. He was certainly better at the Ducks than what Herbert was when he was leading them.

Wow. That is...bracing. Especially the guys who aren't even alive. Following a previous tangent about NIL, there may be an unintended benefit as NFL execs try to assess character. The first lesson of grunge was, "Money changes everything." (Yes, I am of that vintage.) With NIL now enriching college players (and good for them) the opportunity opens to ask, "And what did you do with that first hundred thousand dollars, young man?" (Or whatever the number is.) If the answer is, "Leased a Lamborghini!" that's one thing. If the answer is, "Bought my mom a home and paid for my nephew's college," that's another thing. The first flush of money in the hands of a talented young person who has been told they're special by everyone around them is dangerous and toxic.

I believe A.Curry was said to be the safest top 10 pick that year. Like Joe said their is no "safe pick".

Tangentially related to drafting QBs, Zach Wilson was traded to the Broncos yesterday. For a 6th and 7th round pick swap, with the Jets eating half his salary. Remember when people said he could be worth a 1st or at least 2nd rounder? #2 overall pick in his draft, and the Jets still had to pay to get him off their roster.

That draft produced 4 serviceable players but not a star. Brooks, Darrel Taylor & Damian Lewis started or had significant playing time for us. Colby Parkinson left with untapped potential still on the table & I wish we could have kept him. It wasn't a horrible draft. It just produced more middle of the road guys. .500 guys on a .500 team.

We still have a lot of those & I'm hopeful that we either stick and pick and get a great player if one is still there OR we can leverage the new coaches NCAA player knowledge and draft a bunch of mid-late round sleepers like Pete & his staff did when they first got here & still had insider knowledge about college guys. I think a few great players can elevate the middle of the road guys to play at the next level. So far, I think we have 1 for sure in Spoon & a whole bucket of maybe, but not yet guys. My biggest worry is that we trade down & then just take more middle of the road guys. Serviceable starters that don't move the needle.

It would be funny if we traded back to say 25 with GB, and then drafted DeJean. There is a rumor (for what THAT's worth) that the Lions are targeting him after losing out on Spoon last year. Wouldn't it be funny if we stole their lunch money twice in a row. Or even sweeter, move back to 28 (Buffalo I think) and then do it. Then watch Detroit trade back and act all heartbroken, with Dan Campbell breaking shit and everything.

The psychology of the draft is very amusing. Detroit, for some reason, felt compelled today to announce to fans that they had 'a guy' in mind, and if he wasn't there, they would trade back. Why would you ever announce that? You don't need the fans permission to do that or anything. John doesn't 'prepare us' for the fact he might trade down or up. He doesn't need to. Those are two obvious options for him.

Kind of makes you wonder if they are actually going to use later picks to trade UP to ensure they don't lose their guy this year. Hey Dan, you can have #16 for the right price.

Is it time yet?

The 2020 draft was something unique. For all we 'hate' Goodell, he put in a shift over three days and seeing him go slowly more insane was incredible. Andy Reids hawaiian shirt. Big Bills Dog. Some truly budget party decorations, some even more budget team decorations. And a great showing of family importance with all the big draft parties busted up, no agents, no wannabes trying to get in the shot, i loved that.

It was fun to see that for the most part, the same teams were picking in the same part of the draft as they are this year. A reflection on the management I think.

In the mock drafts I have done, I pick Brian Thomas or Rome Odunze every time they fall to me at 16.... what this tells me is that I am ok with JS picking any position if he believes a generational talent is possible there. But, I kinda knew that about me already. I also tend to end up with Barton, Verse, and Murphy II after trading back a bit. I always get a guy that appears to be a value who slid. This probably reflects just the cursory knowledge of the prospects that I have, since I perceive them as "values" if they don't go top-10 when they are projected too. I know that I don't know more than what anyone else knows, apparently.

My initial reaction to us picking Brooks was, "well, alright. I guess.". Now, it looks like it was too valuable of a pick to make on a guy who never lived up to that spot. So, I have to acknowledge that my doubts were founded. We probably could've had him later. If that happened, it would have been a fair or even decent return on the pick value.

This was original and enlightening. And a frightening reminder of how wrong we’ll all be on @40% of 1st rd picks

Great read. Even better article concept. A concise object lesson on why drafting is as much art as science…which is pertinent today before our annual descent into teeth gnashing, second guessing, and face palming.
