Max Unger and Steve Hutchinson, two of the biggest mistakes in Seahawk history. Should have put more value on both and never should have parted with either one. Who was Center when we won the Super bowl in 2014? Max Unger. What year was Max Unger traded? 2015.
Steve Hutch opened holes for Shaun Alexander who ran for 1,318 yards in 2001 and 14 touchdowns that year. He ran over 1,000 for the next 4 years and 28 TD's in 2005, MVP, went to the Superbowl. Steve played on the line all those years including when the Seahawks went to the Superbowl. He went to the Vikings in 2006 and Alexander didn't didn't do much the next 2 years and retired shortly after that. 2005 SB should have been a win also, except for the 4 extra Steelers with black and white striped uniforms.
Let's remember that Wilson's unreal scrambling ability made up for a bad OL. for many years. We better get better on the OL because , unlike Russ, Geno’s no Houdini!
Best Player Available. BPA. JSMM have put us in position to not need to fill any holes. The only real hole is at guard, and as SSJ has said, there are loads of options to get a vet right up until September, if necessary. However, we will have multiple opportunities to draft a guard/tackle or guard/center depending on BPA and value. Best player available doesn't mean positional value is ignored.
Many, me included, are thinking about the local hero, Fautanu, because of his positional versatility as well as his connection to our new OC. He can fill in at tackle or play guard as needed, which seems tailor made for our team with all of the uncertainty around Lucas' health and availability.
But he may be gone, and yet we know someone valuable will still be around at 16 because there are at least 18 or more blue chip players. If it's a DE or DT is OK. Heck, if JJ McCarthy or Penix are still there, those would be good value.
I believe as most ex-players usually say, the trenches on both sides are (after the QB) the most important area on a team. If you want to be good and become better and head towards the Big dance! I believe ( as I keep saying) the center is the true leader on the offensive line- Plug in a top notch center and the line Immediately gets better! That leads to consistency and more wins and a better chance to go deep in the playoffs-
So I actually have another question. Fautanu is getting all the hype as the left tackle for UW but he was not the blind side tackle as Penix is a lefty. Rosengarten would have been the blind side tackle but he’s being ranked as a 2-4th rounder. Is the left side harder in general or is the NFL media just not paying attention? Why would UW put their best tackle on the QB’s throwing side? I didn’t follow the Huskies very closely. Am I missing something?
I believe the reason is that most defenses do not adjust by flipping adjust their defensive ends / outside linebackers when they play a left handed QB. Fautana is getting the hype because he is that good. The only thing that was holding his draft stock down was the belief that he’d have to play guard in the NFL because of his arm length. But at the combine his arm measurements were in line with expected of a left tackle. because of his position flexibility He would be a great draft choice for the Seahawks but I don’t know that he will be there at 16.
I chose LBs because it means stopping the run and the short passes. Even more important with the Rams and 9ers.
The I have to disagree with elite quarterback in Free Agency, but sadly Tom Brady won't be available again. Maybe we can get Mahomes when his contract ends. :D
Back to reality...
Then I chose John Schneider because I think the key is always the Draft. He has to constantly hit on his picks and if some day the Hawks have enough Blue Chippers on First Contracts they are back again.
Last one I go with Trenches but just because you said 'reach', not win. Because as it seems you can't win it without the QB being good enough.
Trent Dilfer, Nick Foles, Brad Johnson, Joe Flacco have Super Bowl Rings within recent history.
You can add the next tier with Eli, Big Ben, Russ etc.
Geno Smith just won 8 out of 17 games with a terrible offensive line and a terrible defense. That is really impressive. Maybe we should try to build an actually decent team? Then see what he can do? Even if that comes up short then the rookie will be in a better position.
A statistical case can be for Geno being a top QB and doing so is right up SSJ's balliwack, but he's not feeling it so he never does the stats to prove anything but that Geno is mediocre. The last 5 or 6 games, Geno was near the top of the league in a lot of stats, and when you add in the caveat that Geno was the only QB in the top 5 who was working with an OL that wasn't solid. Given an OL and another .3 seconds and he could be even better.
Went and rewatched Geno in the second half against the Titans because I was fired up after reading this comment ... I am not alone! Geno played great at the end of the season.
I found this to be interesting from this article: "The Seahawks didn’t have a good offensive line in 2023, they had an injury to their best offensive lineman for most of the season, and Cross missed more than we were comfortable with, but they also almost made the playoffs."
It's amazing to me that that comment can be made while also knowing that the Seahawks defense was one of the worst. So if we almost made the playoffs ... How?
But Joe doesn't want to go to the QB for whatever reason. In good games its all DK ... In bad games its all Geno. Citing things such as points scored in a game. Terrible stat. Points scored needs to be looked at on a per possession basis not per game. Our defense was so bad we only had 7 possessions in the Titans game (for example).
If you have a bad offensive line, not good run game, and a bad defense ... someone has to be good for you to win 9 games and almost make the playoffs. Who could that be?
Anyways, great comment! Hopefully JS can get some support for Geno in the way of protection next year!
Wait until J R Plumlee gets a year under his belt and we just might have the 2nd coming of Lamar Jackson...whoop whoop! That is just so much fun to dream about.
I enjoyed the polls today, and for me it’s all about improvements on D and stopping the run. Get it done, McD.
That being said, I also see today the “high butt factor” article in The Athletic, and I’m asking why SSJ hasn’t jumped on that - isn’t it the kind of analysis that’s right in his wheelhouse? Missed opportunity, it seems.
I wish I could have chosen 2 options with the last question. Both trenches and QB I think are crucial to success in ‘25. I chose trenches, but I have real concerns at QB and hope they draft a good one this year to take the reins (anyone who takes note of my posts will know Nix is my choice - I think he’s the closest one to being ‘ready-to-go’
The all new coaching staff is the only reason some of these polls are hard. If Seattle's defense had shown up against the Steelers & Cowboys last season, Seahawks would have finished 11-6. To take this further, if Seattle's offense had shown up against the Bengals & Rams (2nd time) then their 11-6 turns into 13-4. This is a really talented team that could and should have been way better last year.
But since we have a whole new coaching staff, I have to wonder how many growing pains there will be on both offense & defense this season. Assuming we have another good draft, I honestly think Seattle has the talent to win the division. But the growing pains that come with a new coaching staff might cause us to finish 9-8 for the 3rd straight year in a row. Which I'm okay with as long as I see progress during the season.
In a perfect world, this coaching staff is able to be great right away and we win 11 or 12 games with the players buying in.
Everything you said plus we get an easier schedule this year, so I'm thinking those growing pains will be offset by the surprise factor a new regime brings.
I believe Geno is a starting quality QB in the NFL (middle third). I also believe that to make the Super Bowl, absent a truly superior roster, a team needs a difference maker at QB (top 1/4). That being said, I voted for defense because the question is premised on the Seahawks making the Super Bowl in 2025. No rookie QB has ever reached the Super Bowl and I don’t think the Seahawks are going to be the ones to break that barrier. So if the Seahawks are going to get to the Super Bowl in 2025 it will be because their defense is elite / maybe even historic no matter who the QB is.
They certainly could but if they take one of the top round guys, wouldn’t they have to keep 3 QBs on their active roster? You could never put Penix or Nix on your practice squad. I suppose they could cut or trade whoever they see as the 3rd wheel.
We are a run game away from a dominating offense, and since Macdonald is a defensive guru, that automatically makes our defense average. Put the two together and you have a Super Bowl team.
In two years we will dominate the league and win our second Super Bowl in a row. Geno will want to get paid at that point, but the dynasty should hold together for at least three years. My vision is cloudy past that point. Please deposit another quarter for my next prediction.
I guess my biggest question at this point is how Schneider looks at the 1st round OL talent. The guys that COULD be around 16 that most like are Fuaga & Fautanu. Seattle will take a tackle in the first round but John himself has said that guards are overdrafted. Would John take one of those guys if he sees them as starting tackles in the NFL but would he pass if, as many journalists like to say, they are better suited to slide inside at the next level? At the end of the day, would John take Fautanu at 16 if he's a tackle but not if he sees him as a guard? Curious to see what people think.
- I do not believe that he would or at least at 16 (maybe after a trade down). But, the market has changed. Look at the price that teams are paying for guards. Thought this was an interesting post by Ben Baldwin. Look at the value of guards! https://x.com/benbbaldwin/status/1769812086127825333?s=20
Another way to look at it is the skyrocketing contracts of Interior D-line. Will JS change? I would doubt it, but we will see I don't know.
Would JS take a tackle and move Lucas inside?
- This is the big question with the Hawks. What is Abe Lucas' health? Will he return to full health? Even if you assume he does. He is a very good tackle when healthy, do you move him inside anyways and draft a tackle?
Last question, what if there is a stud defender that they rank top 10 prospect? Maybe Verse or Byron Murphy ... Do they look at that and say these players have that much upside we can't pass them up.
Lots of questions, which makes it exciting. Things will become more clear but right now I think they likely take a lineman (tackle) either at 16 or trade down.
If our staff believe Fautanu has the potential to become a starting quality tackle in the NFL, pick 16 would be a fine price to pay. Seems obvious when stated that simply.
I need the O-Line guys to explain to me why a college tackle might make more sense at guard in the pros. Is it a height issue, or a weight issue, or both? The internet machine tells me that Fautanu is 6'4" and 317 pounds. That's a big person. Is he too short to play right tackle? Does one or two inches make that much of a difference, or is it an arm length issue, or something else? What's the minimum physical cutoff for NFL tackle? What is it about playing tackle that makes a 6'6" frame more advantageous than that of a 6'2" guard?
Personally, I believe 6'4" is tall enough ,it is all about the footwork and how they are able to use their hands. Just remember that Walter Jones was 6'4 3/4" and 290 lbs -although that was mid 2000's and the tackles have now gotten heavier.
That's crazy. That sounds so small now. Pro football reference has him at 325, though that may have been after a few years in the league. I'd imagine Fautanu, and any other kid in their early 20s, could pack on more pounds if needed.
Plumped for Tackle on the offence, mostly out of a concern Lucas issues won't be fixed. But it's very close with G/C where we don't feel finished either. We don't need a splashy draft at these positions, but in a year stacked deep with OLine talent I hope we address these areas.
Linebacker. Two upgrades on the surface, but a lack of depth behind. Still there are players on the market to add later, and a couple of interesting draft options. Overall i'm not that worried about the Defence, mostly because it couldn't really be any worse.
Good start to the post-Pete era. Smart cuts. Restrained but directed FA moves. Seemingly good coaching changes. Not sure what else you could have wanted as a fan?
If think we can win a Wild Card game, but voted missing the playoffs as more of a current prediction. I feel the 49ers are still a clear two/three steps ahead, and for now I think the Rams are also in line the beat us. That'll bump us from the playoffs in my eyes. Still time to turn it around, and of course it's all a total guess until we see the new regime in action on the field.
Superbowl in two years yes! If McD brings us back to a Top10 D as sold, and Grubb can make the offence actually work, then we're going to be hard to stop. Two years to bed those in, make adjustments, then win having drafted either Rattler this time around, or Ewers next year, to be the sparkling new exciting QB. I believe!
I’m going with winning the division. First of all, it’s March—there’s plenty of time for pessimism to set in. More to the point:
* The ‘Hawks were a middling defense (and a reasonably healthy OL) away from an 11-6 record last year. How much of the former was talent and how much was coaching, we’ll find out. Right now, I’m saying that MM will get things turned around
* The Niners have played forty games in two seasons and lost dismally in the SB. They are set up for a SB hangover. Christian McCaffrey has a combined 668 runs and receptions in two regular seasons plus another 110 in the postseason. The last time he shouldered this big a load, he wound up playing ten games in his next two seasons
* Of the two best players on the Rams (by far), one just retired and the QB will be 37. 37-year old QBs not named Brady don’t have a history of greatness
* The Seahawks are better than the Cardinals
Does a lot have to break right? No doubt. But, it’s spring! And not farfetched.
I want to see the new changes on both sides and felt that they needed to clean house on Defense for years. Bobby by himself is not enough to stop the run or pass game. My biggest concern was all the ineptitude on offense which led to such a vast difference in time of possession, which causes a mid defense to turn into a bottom 5 defense. If we could run the ball and control the clock while scoring TDs then this defense gets good enough quickly.
If Marcus has worked out & gained some bulk, would you consider a “Cross, Olu, Trufant, Fant, Fant” OL?
Max Unger and Steve Hutchinson, two of the biggest mistakes in Seahawk history. Should have put more value on both and never should have parted with either one. Who was Center when we won the Super bowl in 2014? Max Unger. What year was Max Unger traded? 2015.

Good comment ... I am very interested to see what happens at 16.
Like you said, I think their options are wide open. However, Fautanu seems like a great fit and would be hard to pass up.
*I reserve the right to change my opinion 100s of times between now and the draft lol
Amen, the last great center we had was Max Unger and we traded him for an over the hill Jimmy Graham.
One of the worst trades we ever made.
Absolutely THE worst!
What we gave up for Adam's is right up there!
Good trench play can even make a QB look good.
See the teams with the best odds in the NFC:
Niners, Lions, Cowboys, Eagles
Actually, are there any good teams without good line play?
Looking at our opponents next year I believe 10-7 is a good number to look at-
So I actually have another question. Fautanu is getting all the hype as the left tackle for UW but he was not the blind side tackle as Penix is a lefty. Unfortunately the only stat that counts is won / lost record. Geno's barely a 500 QB.
Matt Staffords record prior to the rams was 74-90 and 1
He now has a Super Bowl ring. Not on the bad team but on the good team.
So is wins and losses the only stat that counts?

I don’t think that Schneider is willing to give a first-round contract to a guard. FWIW, Huard says that Lucas is too tall and long to play guard.

Yea- The numbers I used were when he first came in the league.
The biggest difference is, that you have no help on one side of you and so you have to move a lot better and react a lot faster.
If you are a lot smaller than your competition they could push you around and if you are a lot bigger they could slip by you.
Plumped for Tackle on the offence, mostly out of a concern Lucas issues won't be fixed. But it's very close with G/C where we don't feel finished either. We don't need a splashy draft at these positions, but in a year stacked deep with OLine talent I hope we address these areas.
