I was comparing Sam Darnold and Drew lock. They look like clones of each.other. both her mobile, both have a strong arm. I both have a quick release and so forth.

To top that off, both were Star basketball ball players in high school both played baseball. Iron sharpens iron should be a fun preseason.

Was that the Malik McDowell class?

Not looking it up I think this was day 2 of 2017...

Malik (DT)

A WR who barely played?

Two O linemen?

Tedric Thompson

Lano Hill

Not that next gen stats has it all figured out but our first four selections were all top ten in both production and athleticism. We also picked up top ten in production only players in Martinez and White III. We also signed two udfa that were top ten in athleticism only in Ivey and Woodard...just putting it out there.

UDFAs' Zy Alexander (CB) and Jackson Woodard (LB) could also be players who make the roster at crucial spots. Overall it was a really impressive off-season by JS.

For me this Guy is definitely a Top 5 GM in the NFL.

Going to be some interesting roster choices, especially on game day. 3 QBs? Plus a fullback hybrid. Surely not 4 RBs. How many TEs? If I were on the current practice squad I’d be working real hard right now and talking to my agent about what’s next.

Link to SJ’s 2024 initial roster piece, for reference - 3 RB, 4TE, 11 OL, 6WR, 2 QB. This year, QB3 takes a WR slot, and Arroyo splits time (5.5 WR, 2.5 TE plus FB). Possibly we carry a 4th “true” TE + FB, if someone extra really impresses, but I’m guessing the PS swing game will cover 4th TE needs. Seems like the extra OL may be more necessary, just to prevent poaching.

This is what’s been on my mind too. Last year to this year, sounds like we have decided to carry a QB3 and a FB, two new active roster slots. FB/TE, whatever you want to call Ountz/Russell. And we need to consider Kubiak’s reliance on RB/TE roles - so I figure it’s 7 guys between those two roles, plus the 3 QBs. That’s 10. Another 10 OL, maybe 9, but we have spent a lot of draft capital on that group, so let’s say 10. Plus 5 WRs. That makes 25. Is that a logical count for offense, or am I missing something?

Implications - it’s Russell or Ountz, McIntosh or Martinez, Horton probably WR4 with punt return skills, all the rest fight it out for WR5 and swing with the practice squad. And some guards are getting cut or traded. Jerrell fights it out with someone for the backup RT spot. And that’s all without any more signings. And I think JS still has a deal or two up his sleeve.

There's going to be some fun camp competitions, especially at OL, DB, RB and TE/FB.

Hard to pick a favorite draft pick. I liked the Zabel pick because of his film and the fact we needed him so badly. I think he ends up leading the o-line room. Total alpha. I know, not a Day 2 pick, but humor me.

I like the Emmenwori pick because of the possibilities of what he and MM can do together. There's absolutely nothing physically he can't do. Same with Milroe, nothing he can't do on the football field once he gets his mechanics sorted out, and learns the NFL game. Milroe will be an open question for a few years, but it would be cool if he had a package he could execute in year 1. That'd be fun.

MJDarby15's avatar

My biggest hope with Milroe is that some of the mechanics just didn't get worked on because he was also dedicated to his studies - winning the academic prize this season indicates a highly intelligent, diligent young man and that's exactly the type of personality you want in a toolsy developmental prospect. Wouldn't be surprised to see him Russ/Brady his way into the QB1 spot before end of the season (though I'm not expecting it).

I think he was also a poor fit for DeBoer's system and DeBoer could not or did not adjust well to that.

Chris H's avatar

That's the thing with Milroe. He has the legs, the arm, and the brain. There is no reason why he can't develop into a good starting QB. But, history shows us it happens all the time. I think with him it's drilling the habits until he isn't thinking about them anymore. He was thinking about way to many things at the combine, and it showed in his performance. Drill his footwork, his throwing mechanics, pocket presence, and his progressions until he's just reading the defense and making good accurate throws. And if there is nothing there, run like hell!

The potential is there, and that's what the off-season is about - stocking up on potential (and hope).

Yes all of these days 2 picks could be giant busts that play 2 games total. Yes Sam D could be so bad he's benched after week 5.

But right now we have the potential! The chance! The hope!

Another great move this offseason that many would disagree with me, is missing out on will fries. Had we signed him, we would have passed on Zabel, and been on the hook for 17-18 million for 3 to five years. That savings will pay all of Cross’ 5th year option and most of his salary if he’s extended beyond that. Only time will tell if this was a great choice by JS, but my bet is on Cross/zabel over maybe Cross if the combination of Cross/Fries is too high to extend him. The cheaper left side of the line makes extending Lucas more likely as well.

I like the two picks, Ouzts at FB and Martinez at RB, that should fix their short yardage problem! If Emmanwori is the next Cam " Bam Bam" Chancellor, that's a great pick,!!

“…how many of the 10 players picked on day 2 from 2016-2017 can you name?”

Rees Odhiambo and Malik McDowell embody the nearly unmitigated disaster of those classes. Amara Darboh,* Ben Burr-Kirven, Cody Barton come to mind. Shaquill Griffin was okay, but that was about it. Had I owned the team, I would have fired Schneider over those drafts and demoted Carroll.

* For a while, a story floated around that the offensive coaches knew from the first day of practice that Darboh was irredeemably bad.

Sorry another post but just read Nick as a FS, led the Gamecocks in tackles with 88 this past season. Even with a high level of missed tackles, that means he’s around the ball (4 INTs). Sweet.

The missed tackles somewhat turned me off Emmanwori, I anticipate shouting "USE YOUR FUCKING ARMS" at least once a game for a while.

He did miss some tackles, but given his physical gifts, that should be an easy fix. I'm sure that will get drilled early and often, as Mike MacDonald won't put up with sloppy tackling.

It's very much a technical element of the game so reason to expect some growth, just coming from a rugby background I always wince when I see poor tackling form (which is RIFE even in the NFL)

Agreed. Loved the early PC seasons where they created tackling videos. And even better, real tackling not “hit” type like Adams. I hate when someone tries to light someone up, but fails to wrap up, and offensive player is able to stay on his feet. Why Kam was so great. He lay you out but he didn’t lead with his helmet, he “saw the numbers” and used arms not just a shoulder. ET wouldn’t always wrap but heat seeking missile doing full body contact not just a shoulder. Man just so much disliked Adams. PC got really sloppy in that arena last few years.

Side note. Everyone keeps bringing up Fant. Yes he’s likely tradeable. Get that. And I saw Aaroyo has a Fant comp. But the “Fant can be removed” isn’t a need anymore. JS already took care of cap. Fant could play out his contract. We’re not in a camp bind anymore. Coach K needs receiving TEs. Saubert Brady or Ouzts or the ST players brought in, are not receiving TE’s. AJ improved but also isn’t. Coach K has mentioned he likes what Fant can do. Fant might be replaced but unless Aaroyo is a Bowers or Kittles, there isn’t a reason to jettison Fant. TE room with Fant AJ and Aaroyo with Ouzts/Saubert/Sundell at FB gives Coach K versatility we’ve not had in ages. And we don’t have a deep WR room group. Based on receiving skills right now, Fant is #3 on this team only behind Kupp and JSN. MVS/Horton or our favorite Bobo etc. none of them are better than Fant. Camp it may change but we don’t need cap savings anymore. Still think he is traded but he’s 3rd best receiver on this team right now.

Take a look at this list: age 80 Flacco, Drew Lock, Teddy Bridgewater, Geno. And a couple no name backups. That’s been Fants QBs with more than one season a defensive style head coach. His second and 3rd seasons he had 183 targets. In his 3 seasons in Seattle 180 targets, 90 vs 60. Fants not the issue. Coaching has been the issue. Over 75% catch percentage. He’s target #3 in a coach K scheme. Issue being, less passing. My original post stands.

Further. Granted quoting from Dane but he does a bang up job in evaluating college players “Overall, Arroyo needs further development as a route runner and blocker to reach his ceiling, but he can bring an immediate vertical element to an offense with his speed, fluidity and focused ball skills. He is easy to project as an NFL starter and a weapon for which defenses must account.” Arroyo is not Kittles or LaPorta or Bowers. I don’t get why Fant is replaced when Coach K needs receiving tight ends.

Grant's avatar

Fant's value to the team hinges upon Arroyo's development. The better the rookie is, the less Fant is needed. Fant's value as a tradable asset hinges upon how other teams' rosters come together and injuries. As you point out, JS took care of the cap. There's no need to settle for a trade anytime soon. But, there's an easy to imagine future scenario where Fant is worth considerably more to another team than he is to us. The TE room gives JS options and opportunities, and that's awesome.

Expand full comment
Randall Murray's avatar

Agreed which is why I pointed out the “receiving” TE connect. We now have multiple blocking but only 2 Receiving TEs. Arroyo becomes that semi rare guy who gets it, then Fant tradable. We eat the bonus other team part of salary. To me we have an asset and depth. And ideally AJ grows from year 1 to 2 as he did during last year, then we’re set for several years, cheaply.

And the Whiners just signed Kittle right 4 years 76 mil….liked the comment about Nick and “division with all those receivers and tight ends”. Nick is actually a need. And I also noted when others said they needed to draft a corner. I semi disagree in that by drafting Nick, Spoon can now be moved to multiple spots. We now have Riq outside but Coby Nick Spoon and Love can play multiple DB spots. Our DB got better with one pick not a traditional outside hash only CB. Diversity in that DB room for Coach Mac and Durde.
