I was a big fan of Lucas from the get go when I heard he kept tracks of his pancake blocks! It's great having two young pro bowl quality bookend tackles. He's a beast

Abe is the missing Anchor for our Offensive Line. Better yet we'll have Cross sharing the position. That is absolutely crucial if we ever hope to establish a group of guys, Friends, who learn to dance together and kick ass. Once established, any vacancy can be filled by Men trained out of the support squads. In House, organized and happy. That's some powerful Football, right there.

Good news, one less thing to worry about next season. And it seems like a good deal for the Hawks, so even better.

Looks like they are tearing up the last year of his rookie contract ($3M) so this basically adds two years and $43M. $21.5M AAV is a lot closer to market rate, and he might actually hit market rate after incentives. We need to see how the guarantees look before we can determine whether this is really a team friendly deal or just a fair price for a stud OT.

Still think it's a smart move. Dude was crushing people when healthy.

I have looked high and low for confirmation on this and can't find it. I saw what you saw too about "tearing up" the existing deal, but I can't find where I saw that either. I've never heard of a team tearing up a rookie contract either. It doesn't really make any sense why a team would do that. Can you find the source and send it to me?

I double checked and looks like I may have misspoke. The Athletic reported that "Lucas...was entering the final year of his rookie contract and slated to carry a salary-cap hit of $3.6 million" and I took that use of the past tense to mean this deal would start now and replace that final year of his rookie contract. However, I didn't see that later on in the article it claims the extension runs through the 2028 season.

That would in fact make this way more team friendly, $12.4M AAV over the next four years for a healthy player of Lucas' caliber is pretty unbelievable. Perhaps the incentives and guarantees will be quite substantial to make up for the low AAV.

As we all should know by being SSJ followers, AAV means jack sh*t! It's good to get a deal done, as it tells me the staff are comfortable with his knee and those issues are done (you can never guarantee something else doesn't crop up, but that known problem is fixed!).

Pure guessing here, but based around other contracts etc. I wouldn't be surprised if this is a pretty flat contract with a similar hit per year. However I would imagine that yearly hit is tilted towards starting bonus over base salary. It could well be a deal that doesn't have a lot of outs for the 'Hawks, but fingers crossed we don't need them.

Cross, when he comes, and he will, i'm sure will crack the Top10 AAV, if not the Top5. But the structure of that deal will be very interesting, especially in length and outs.

Cross is a few years younger than Lucas, so You could see him on a 4 year extension on top of the 5th year option, locking him up for 6 years. If they extend him at 24 million a year, that might be high right now, but 5 years down the road 24 million a year would be a bargain.

That's a little longer than JS usually does for term though isn't it? I thought he was the king of the 3 year deal.

Danno's avatar

Yeah, but I think Cross is still 24 or just turned 25, so he’s a young pup, and even younger for OTs that can play in their prime into their mid 30s.

Issac B's avatar

It's an extension, so that makes his current contract 4 years, ~50 million, right? So ~12.5m AAV, not 15m. l'm interested to see how they break down the yearly totals/cap hits, guarantees, incentives, etc.

SMART move by Schneider. We'll have to see how it's structured but as gambles go, that $15m APY could easily have been $23m if he plays the full season well. Yes a gamble but from what everyone is saying, he's done a body remake and that knee must be getting some help from that too.

I saw him from 10 feet away at the VMAC, he looks like a Greek god, or a gladiator. If he has a good couple of games to start the season, he’s going to scare defensive coordinators. With Bradford next to him, that right side of the line is going to be a road grading machine.

There's a Vikings podcast my buddy listens to called "Bless the Knees." I'm gonna sound like Jarvis Landry on hard knocks and say "Bless 'Em" before every game. https://www.facebook.com/Free99Hype/videos/jarvis-landry-yells-bless-em-as-he-works-the-dbs-in-training-camp-watch-the-full/981932715326680/ (hate to link Facebook, but it was the only video I could find.)

I must say, I'm not terribly impressed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_KTpxps7mrw "Eek Eek Eek" doesn't inspire much fear. I guess there's a reason that eagles in movies always get a red tailed hawk call sound effect.

Check out the link I posted of an osprey (aka seahawk) call. Not what I was expecting when you see the sheer size of one. This got me thinking that it's a shame there's no NFL team with "Sharks" or "Marlins" or any other fish.

I thought we’d have to wait until the bye week to get Lucas. I did wonder why he played in every preseason game, and whether that was to make a determination of his overall knee health. There was no real reason for him to play extended preseason time in his 4th year. I figured they would have to pay more than this, but Lucas, like E. Jones, gave the Seahawks a very friendly team contract. Lucas and Jones made it clear they want to retire a Seahawk. I’m so glad we sh*tcan players like DK who want to play elsewhere, and reward players like Lucas who love being here. I’m now a huge Lucas fan! I expect incentives, and I do hope he earns them. That would be good for him AND the team. Thank the lord the supposedly intelligent Seahawks football people didn’t get their wish and JS did not pursue Parsons. That $47 million APY would make these extensions that much more difficult. We won’t have to try and find an OT next year, and with any luck, perhaps Cross will add a few years on to his 5th year option.

This is looking good for an up and coming Seahawks team for the next few years. GO HAWKS!!

Lucas didn't play in the 3rd game, and only had 20 and 19 snaps in the first 2 games, similar to the other starters.

I think, for Lucas and the Seahawks, the knee issue and worries related to it were put to rest when he returned after the repair last year. It was not a chronic injury, he has been a full participant in the offseason program, and there have been no signs of any extra protection or care for the knee.

I see him sitting when a big lead allows for it.

The reason they are getting an “extraordinary discount” is because the knee issue has not been put to rest. This contract is about the team taking on some of the risk attendant with the knee in exchange for a discount.

Thanks for clarifying. I couldn’t bring myself to watch that GB game a second time. They have to be pretty confident in the knee. My biggest fear is we were going to lose him and be starting over trying to find a high quality OT. Even 1st round OTs, can easily be busts. It’s an incredibly hard position to play at a good level of performance. The NY Giants drafted an OT ahead of Cross in the 1st round, also a top 10 pick. I haven’t checked up on him recently, but he seemed to be sub par quality OT.
