Pete Carroll is in a lot of rare clubs and he just joined another one: The Las Vegas Raiders will be the fourth NFL team that has made him the head coach.
The only other person who I am certain has done that is Marty Schottenheimer, although former Seahawks coach Chuck Knox did also coach for the Bills and had two separate stints with the Rams. Wade Phillips, who congratulated Pete on Friday, has technically been the head coach of SIX different teams but half of those were interim.
It’s been one year since the Seahawks fired Pete Carroll (that term wasn’t used, but Pete said himself that he fought to keep his job) and luckily there is no peep of Seattle regretting the move because the team either improved or at worst stayed the same. Despite how much Pete did for the franchise — and will do for the Raiders franchise — it was probably the best time for the Seahawks to make a change and Mike Macdonald had the resume to be worth a shot.

The Raiders are so unlikely to win the Super Bowl in 2025 or 2026 that hiring Carroll now could at least bring the franchise back to respectability and order by the time they have better players and a better quarterback in place; Pete’s team-building philosophies (“Always Compete” and “Win Forever”, etc.) align with part owner Tom Brady’s probable vision and Las Vegas might actually climb back to .500:
In the last 22 seasons, the Raiders have had a negative point differential 19 times
Out of those 19 seasons, they were outscored by at least 100 points 12 different times
Their three positive seasons: +39 points, +31 points, +1 point
The Raiders have not won a playoff game since 2002
By comparison, the Seahawks have been outscored by over 100 points only four times in franchise history. Pete has had 13 winning seasons in his career, while the Raiders have only had 13 winning seasons total since 1981.
The AFC West coaches are now: Pete Carroll, Andy Reid, Sean Payton, and Jim Harbaugh.
What are your thoughts on Pete Carroll’s swift return to the NFL with a former Seattle Seahawks rival?

Oh, great news for Pete! I hope he takes the Raiders to the Super Bowl! I am going to absolutely hate seeing him cheering on the sidelines, chewing bubble gum and enjoying a team that has fun together! I expect Marshawn will spend time there and a few Hawks still playing in the league head for a trade.
I love him going to him Harbaugh's division. That will be funny to watch
