Goff and Cousins can be very competent if their surroundings help, so that's a draw between Vikings and Lions. Goff won more playoff games, though. Justin Jefferson is right now the best receiver in the whole league. But I am skeptical of the Vikings. I think they revert to the mean and have a mediocre season, and the Lions keep building on a good start from last year (they had the same record as the Seahawks, don't forget that!), so I choose to believe in them.

The one thing that I'm optimistic about re: the Seahawks is that even if they get off to a meh start, I think they'll get better as the season goes along, instead of the regression we saw last year. With the depth, they should be able to avoid wearing down players, while getting snaps for the 1st and 2nd year young'uns.

Like every other team, if they lose key players to extended injuries, all bets are off. But if they stay reasonably healthy, perhaps Seattle will be the team nobody wants to play in January.

So don't fret about a 2 and 2 start. It's hard to watch growth and learning sometimes, but it's worth it in the end.

So much of the NFL is determined by injuries. Who has the depth and avoids to many losses at key positions. The Eagles still have a pretty good roster and have the potential for a really good RB room. I just don't see much regression. The 49ers seem to be the NFL Network darlings to challange the Eagles. During the Gameday preview show tonight on NFL Network, Mooch, Rich and Kurt picked 49ers hands down to win the west and make it to the SB. They also couched that with a side coment that they could eat crow too. Not exactly, but something to that extent after appologizing to Seahawk Fans before their pick.

We all read about Seattle's Offensive line being a bottom pick by PFF and still question marks about their D line as well. (They didn't draft Carter)

Cynthia F is the only one on the program to show Seattle some love with Spoon as the defensive rookie of the year and Seattle facing Buffalo and losing to them in the SB.

JSN appears to be back soon, Morris, Hall and Young appear to be ready for week one, Brooks is back (Wags), Love is the Adams replacement, Adams is back to practice slow walk and now it looks like Dereke Young could be back in 4- 6 weeks. I think the waiver wire guys will make a difference on Seattle's roster.

Can Seattle compete with Philly and SF (some seem to think Detroit and NO are the dark horses).

Seattle puts a middle of the pack defense on the field and they can.

In the end, the injury report will determine the teams future in 2023 and who's coming off the bench.

I think week 2 for Seattle will be a pretty good barometer for 2023.

Whether or not Seattle can win it all; I think the potential is there as is the desire. Personally, I haven't been as excited about a Seattle team going into regular season since the 12 and 13 rosters. 13 was pretty amazing, but I think 23 has a lot less media frenzy, but the team has this quiet chutzpah.

Let the games begin.

hmmmmmm......defines Mariotismal as being a noun, but used in a sentence as an adverb? I don't think I can trust you now lol. another great article

I knew when I was jamming this article out that I may have screwed that up and I will own and acknowledge my error. Thanks for correcting me!

NFC East -- One has to give it to the Eagles until someone proves otherwise. I'm not a Cowboys believer. As for the bottom, it's hard to not go with Washington but, sure, the Giants suck too. Pick yer poison.

NFC North -- I knew without even reading your post you were going to pick the Vikings for the top spot, as do I, and the Bears for the bottom. No argument there either. The whole division is a mess. Packers without Rogers? Maybe the Lions could surprise us.

NFC South -- I'm going to go on a tear and give the top spot to the Panthers. That's the team I'd like to see win it. Young is just a rookie but I could see him being one of the few to be good right out of the gate. Of course it's not a one man show but a good QB can make others better. It's hard for me to believe in the Saints of the Falcolns and the Bucks promise to be horrible. So I'll go with them for the last spot.

NFC West -- If I'm going with my heart, I have to call if for Seattle of course. That said, I'm nervous. San Francisco still has a ton of talent. Purdy isn't great but he seems to be poised enough to do well in that system. Not a guy to carry a team but he won't have to. If I weren't biased, I'd have given it to the Niners. For bottom of the division, it'll be a barn burner between the Rams and the Cards. Given the quality of the underlying organizations, I'll go with the Cards. McVay will find a way to pull out a handful of games.

The last joint to mature in men happens late at 25-26 year's old. It's the elbow joint that Purdy whacked hard enough to demand surgery. Let's hope it doesn't "over-heal" and cause him issues...

He looked alright in the preseason. Guess we'll see how he holds up.

Mariotismal is an adverb I think?, since it modifies a verb.

Having said that, be it a noun or a verb, I love it! Kinda like the Dalton Line (an exactly average QB). Except I like it even better than the Dalton Line, great concept!!

I screwed that one up haha.

“Mariotismal”, hhmmm. I kinda feel for Mariota. He got a bum steer at the Titans with all the staffing turnover. And being a Ducks fan, I know how talented he actually is. I think his struggles at the Titans just gutted his confidence. I hope he makes some sort of comeback at some stage.

Also, I’m considering getting a personalised 12’s Jersey with: “Seaside Joe Bro”.

What d’yall think? I think we’re ready for some merch to support the bestest Seahawks coverer ever.

Most skeptical in the NFCW: the Niners. We already know the Rams will be bad, AZ worse. But the Niners are currently talked about as SB contenders and I think it is more likely they will fail to make the playoffs than they will reach the NFCCG.

I am a believer in the Lions--loved their draft and they are the team to beat in the NFCN.

"We already know the Rams will be bad"

Just from the experience of closely following everything said about the Rams, I don't think it is correct to say "we already know" they will be bad. Me and you know it, but there's an incredible hesitancy for most to accept it for some reason.

:D Ok "The Seaside Joe community already knows..."

There are always surprises... and Sunday's game may not tell us a whole lot. Will the Seahawks offense be "full speed" in Week 1 or will it take a couple of games to get rolling? Will the D be able to communicate more effectively immediately (with Bobby there, it should) or will it characteristically stumble out of the gate?

I like The Hooded One's comment on the Rams: "the check comes due..." and this year the Rams pay the price for giving away drafts and having so much dead salary.

I'm still thinking the Niners are the ones to beat -- esp if Bosa comes back soon. That's a GREAT roster with or without a QB. And they certainly kicked our ass (easily) last year. With Deebo back, it's a scary team.

But do agree with you and the Lions to win that division -- they finished very strong last year (while the Hawks were collapsing) and are arguably stronger this year. And if there's a "Seahawk" mindset it's Dan Campbell.

Expand full comment

My SB pick is the Lions. It has been said any NFL team can beat another on any given Sunday. Campbell is that kind of Coach, bringing ATTITUDE to an even more talented group, week in/week out. I will take passionate buttkickers over clever schemers any day, Sunday included. Haven't felt this way since I backed Ditka's Bears in 85.

ugh, the NFC isn't even worth arguing about. Let's just beat all of our NFC opponents and let the rest sort themselves out.

Eagles Yay. Cowboys Ney - I just kind of expect the Giants to regress, not really skeptical. But Dem Boys, nah. Not convinced by their OLine to give Dak the time he needs. Outside Lamb that receiver set is slim. Pollard i think won't hold up. The Defence might be what carries them a long way, but ultimately falling short.

Lions Yay. Bears Ney - Maybe the Lions are continuing to sucker me in. But for me they had a super good draft (if you mix the order around it's one of the very best), FA could have been better. Still, this team just feels tough and gritty in a division full of marginal teams. And once you get to January i do not want to play the Lions!

Falcons Yay. Panthers Ney - I like the Falcons! And not just because of Bijan (but a lot because of Bijan... still say we should have draft Bijan at #5). Ridder is the big question mark but there's enough talent around him to make the offence work, whilst a lot of defence roster moves should work. Certainly more than the Saints who just keep rolling the same dice, despite it obviously not working, no i'm not a believer, but the Panthers are far more dodgy.

Seahawks Yay. Rams Ney - I got nothing to add.

NFC is weird! Vs the AFC it's very weak. Outside the Eagles and 'Hawks two divisions could reasonably go to anyone, the Wildcards could go to anyone. Honestly i'd put almost every team into the Skeptical pile bar the Eagles, 'Hawks and maybe 49'ers (but that requires them to sort Bosa, stay relatively injury free, and Purdy to prove he's Brady - so i guess skeptical as well)

I just hope Spoon plays 14 to 15 games this year. If he does I see him making the biggest difference in won lost record opposed to Bjon. It would be very hard to prove if Spoon plays nickel. I believe Bjon is a stud, but a pro bowl cornerback is worth more

Good for you Joe picking the Seahawks, and I elect the Seahawks as well.

The Eagles are the class of the NFC. I would also put them close to the top of the NFL. The only downside with the Eagles. Only once has a team repeated as Superbowl Champs in the 21st century, yes we came to close to not pulling it off. I am going to take credit, I did say with in 20 seconds of our heartbreaking int, that we threw the ball because the

clock forced us to with with the time left on the and only one time out. I didn't know this for sure until Pete Carroll said it on Richard Sherman's podcast 10 days ago. My point, one repeat champ, who was the last team to lose a Super Bowl and make it back to the big game the next year. Jim Kelly and the Bill's. I don't know the answer and I am going to the chairopractor in one minute. So I will say the Eagles don't make it and we do

That Bills team (4x in a row in the SB) is Pete's standard for success because it is so damned hard to get to the SB! I can't think of any losers who made it back the next year either except for those Bills teams. In fact, the "Super Bowl Hangover" is really meant for the SB losers--many of whom fail to even make the playoffs the year following a SB loss. In the 'war of attrition' that is the NFL, playing those extra playoff games plus a tougher schedule the following year leads to a lot of 'crash and burn' scenarios. Could the Eagles be strong enough/talented enough to overcome "the Hangover"? Maybe, and I will not bet against them, but the odds are not in their favor. I would rather back the "2023 Eagles story" aka the Seahawks!

I am wary of that Carter kid and his Georgia alums on defense. If the rest of the guys accommodate his eccentricities, we can expect some records being broken. More likely, frustrations will boil over and the locker room fights begin. (I read he's already throwing punches) Let's hope he grows up quick, lest Phillie phizzles.
