This Seahawks team is a contender. I’m calling my shot. Not that it’s a shot many have not already called. I am not the first by a mile but damn sometimes you just stand on business. Prepare for battle NFC West cause these Hawks are gonna take it to ya. Overstated Bob is a prophet I’m sure. The run game will keep opposing defenses on their heels while allowing the defense to catch a breath. Everything seems logical and obtainable because of the talent from the last few drafts, especially the last 2. Sam Darnold is designed to run this offense. My only question is the 2 minute drill. When we need a big play in the big moment in a big game. Can Sammy deliver? Time will tell.

SJ. One name listed here but hasn’t seem to stand out thus far, Hall. What’s going on? Anyone else have some insight?

I think the center battle is over.

And the Seahawks had a little chat with guard Dalton Risner yesterday. Maybe the RG spot isn't settled just yet. Risner was in Denver with some of the offensive coaching staff, played with Drew Lock there, and with Sam Darnold last year in Minnesota. We'll see.

I have faith in our new OC and OL coach. If Haynes is faking it, he won’t be able to hide it. If he’s for real, they will know it.

If they put him up for trade, I doubt that any teams would bite, unless they’re desperate at the position. He’s not put up great tape, and if the team doesn’t want him…

One reason teams could bite, draft capital. He was highly ranked and viewed in that draft and owning his rights for another year is worth a late pick. Just look at Browns trading a deep, barely used DT or Houston trading WR to Eagles.

True. Being a 3rd rounder makes a difference. And I assume that the college tape was good.

Then again, I expected someone to trade for Noah Fant. I was very surprised that he was simply released. I didn’t expect more than a late round pick, but I didn’t expect zilch.

Randall Murray's avatar

Agreed about Fant but was money I’m sure. He had a high contract. Instead he was signed from FA for peanuts (relatively speaking). Haynes rookie contract cheap. And yes he had great college tape and remember all the accolades from the Sr Bowl. But no way Hawks get “value”.

Yeah, we needed two or more teams to fight for Fant. One team could just wait for the waiver wire to clear. JS has more leverage with Haynes.

I really wanted him to pan out. On to Bradford pancakes and Celebdue.

“The only other name that I would say makes sense is Derick Hall and yes I’m really reaching here to even think of anyone else.”

What about Ken Walker? Some (including Huard) project Charbonnet as the starter. On the one hand, I can’t see this happening. On the other, if this happens, what is the point of hanging on to Walker? He’ll be an FA next year. If a trade could net more than a compensatory pick, why not take it?

I thought Murphy was over rated coming out of the draft. I live in Texas and saw all his Longhorn games. He was better than average but IMO he did not look special. I viewed him as a high floor player ; a safe pick.

Before the draft I would hear people compare him to Aaron Donald. That’s not what I saw.

So what did he did he do ?

PFF 2024

Overall Grade: 57.8 (ranking 97th out of 220 defensive interior players)

• Pass‑Rush Grade: 64.5 (ranked 64th of 220)

• Run‑Defense Grade: 53.6 (105th of 220)

That’s honestly what I saw in college and 2024. He is quick , but wears out. That’s why I believe they rotated him so much. They absolutely need to give him more reps but not over nose.

Let him use his quick step to get pressure. He is strong too and get get a good push.

Seattle will have no problem with SF. They are over rated

The wearing out i can see, he was double teamed on blocks %54 of snaps on rushing plays last year. But on 3rd downs he still ranked 15th in pressure rate with %19.5.

He also only played about %57 of defensive snaps last year due to our Nickel Package subbing him out, lessening his pass rush opportunities.

Like a twitched up Poona Ford...that's kinda what I saw when I first watched him. But then you studied some tape and he does some subtle things that go unnoticed with live viewing. He's a force, hoping his injuries are behind him. Those hamstring injuries can be an issue sometimes.

He is a solid player. Just don’t expect him to be the next Bennett.

Fair points, and it's interesting that Sweat has gotten off to a faster NFL start.

That said, Madabuike took a few years to get to this point, and I think that is the ceiling for Murphy. They seem similar athletically.

The current issue is that most of the time the D is in 4 down lineman, and to put Murphy on the field more means less reps for Williams (if Murphy is to play in the more dynamic B/C gap spot) or Reed (if he's going to be in the A gap more)... perhaps fans should be happy with a reed-murphy rotation which helps with the issues you noted.

PS no one should compare anyone to AD, although if we wanted someone with a shot at that game-wrecker level, then Jalen Carter was that chance.

Byron Murphy is still only 22 years old (23 in 3 weeks). Carter is 1.5 years older and Verse 2 years older. Just saying: his best is yet to come as he gets to his mid-twenties. Many of these beasts on the interior excelled in years 2-3.

What I think he needs to be unleashed as basically another Michael Bennett somebody that can really push the pocket hard and get the double teams off of him. Just watch some of the games from last year where they gave Seattle a hard time. Most of what I saw was a big push-up the middle. That’s why Murphy only had 49% of the snaps he would have two 300 pound plus guys pushing Him. He would just wear out.

I've not held much truk with what I am seeing from a MacDonald Team, as far as our regulars are concerned. He's the stingiest coach we've seen in a while. He tells the Press nothing when injuries are brought up, so why would he reveal anything of substance to hungry League scouts? Game 1 is crucial in so many aspects of team play, he wants every advantage he can find to help them achieve victory and even then he won't reveal more than he must, saving it for Week 2. We'll see what Murphy has learned when money is on the line. Not before.

Agreed. Look at his first year numbers and compare them to Ford One sack and I think he had a couple hurries. They are about the same so this is a big year for him.

It looks like Murphy played well on the passing downs in that clip against the Chiefs, but got pushed around a bit in run defense. I think this is to be expected and is the reason some fans are worried about the NT position, but he looked generally disruptive in this small sample size. Check him out on the 4th down stop. He and Hall both do well to stay low and push into the backfield. He's up against both Creed Humphrey and Trey Smith, too, so it's no easy task. One thing that is clear in that clip is that Creed Humphry is a really good player. Thanks for finding and linking that clip!
