Chip Kelly rumors: Seahawks interview UCLA head coach on Tuesday, per report
Seahawks interviewing Chip Kelly for OC job, according to first-time rumors breaker (and it shows) 2/6/2024
Are the Seattle Seahawks considering Chip Kelly to be Mike Macdonald’s first hire as offensive coordinator? If you’re willing to believe an NFL writer at The Ringer who never breaks news and incorrectly tweeted that Kelly continues to work at the University of Oregon (where he last worked in 2012), then you’re forced to entertain the notion that the Seahawks are open to the idea that Kelly will have significant (if not total) control over Seattle’s offense in 2024.
The Ringer’s Benjamin Solak says that Kelly is interviewing with the Seahawks on Tuesday night and I have some thoughts on what this could mean, if true.
#1 - It could imply that Ryan Grubb and Tanner Engstrand weren’t as impressive in interviews as the Seahawks hoped
The only three known targets for OC so far have been Grubb (OC at UW in 2023), Engstrand (Lions passing game coordinator), and Mike Kafka, who the Giants blocked from Seattle’s interview request. I wrote that the Seahawks were the last team without an OC, which helps explain why the team is reportedly talking to Kelly.
If Grubb or Engstrand blew John Schneider and Macdonald away in interviews, would the regime have tried to talk to Kafka (for a third time) or be talking to Kelly? Sure, maybe. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Seahawks have talked to candidates who haven’t been publicized also; the Seahawks must interview two minority candidates for their coordinator positions and as far as I’m aware, that isn’t Grubb, Engstrand, or Kelly.
I sincerely apologize if I’ve overlooked or missed any updates on that front. Let me know:
