Gonna miss Bryant and his processing and knowledge. I'm not going to miss him saying 'Honestly' every 27th word...good background info in that video though thanks for sharing.
I wonder how Coby will like the move from McDonald to a Sean Payton disciple, Dennis Allen, with the Bears. I don’t know much about Allen’s coaching style, other than over a decade under Payton who seems like a top-down, my-way-or-the-highway kind of coach. We’ll see if Coby gets the collaborative, teaching, free-me-up-to-think-and-react approach he’s used to.
I've been re-watching condensed games from last season over the last couple of weeks as the missus has been away a lot. I'm always stunned at how much I forgot that happened only a few months ago. I watched the Texans game a couple of nights ago, and it really seemed like checkers vs chess on defense. The Texans were lauded as a top defense in the league along with us when that game happened but I could usually tell more or less what the Texans had in mind before the ball was snapped. With the Seahawks on D, I misdiagnosed almost every pre-snap guess. I know they're probably only rushing 4, but good luck figuring out which 4. Spoon will flinch like he's about to rush and then drop into coverage so often that it's not even a tell. A basic 2-2 coverage will shift at the last possible moment to single high. Coby was really coming into his own as the season progressed. Wish we could have kept him.
It's a copycat league, but somehow (so far anyway) no one can quite copy what Macdonald is doing.
I suspect we may see Coby back after his Big Money Contract expires. It will be interesting how this plays out, as if he returns he'll be here for the long run.
No doubt MM puts the work in. I think it was Spoon who said in an interview MM picked up a tell by the Patriots offensive tackle in the Super Bowl which gave away if it was a run or a pass. On passing plays his outside leg was much further away from the line of scrimmage to enable a quick step backwards in pass pro. On running plays it was more forward to enable quick forward motion.
I contrast this to the Seattle O-line where more than one player talked about how important it was to start off exactly the same in a run set or a passing set. Don’t give away the play. This is Benton, who I saw last year at the VMAC measuring the distance between lineman to insure they was exactly where they were suppose to line up. NO TELLS is the goal, and we see how important that can be if another team is really looking at every minute detail.
It feels really good to hear Coby praising Mike McD and the 'Hawks defensive philosophy. Sad for him to go and good on him for getting paid. I am stoked to see what Mike and the other coaches get up to as this defense evolves and sharpens. Go 'Hawks!
Loved this article. I’m just a dumb Aussie without much knowledge of the ins and outs of your US football, so dumbing it down a bit helped me learn a lot. Thanks SJ.
I look forward to your Rugby insights, Dale. My job required i walk and run a lot, so I had to give it up. Loved the brawling aspects (by the rules), but had to keep my knees and ankles operational.
It's both (yes there's two) European Cup finals this weekend, a perfect entry point to get yourself hooked ahead of the 2027 World Cup. Then when the 2031 World Cup hits Stateside you'll be able to show off to all your friends ;)

"If this feels elementary to some of you", These are explsanations that make it clearer to me.
It is Not so elementary to this one.

FWIW, Mike Dugar has made pretty much the same point about the Houston defense.
Gonna miss that dude. Serious, intense competitor, with a lot of pride. Good Seahawk. Got his bag, and good for him.
I am sure every quarterback in league is thinking “Oh Brother Where Art Thou.” Great one SSJ!
Have those words pop up on screen when the Hawks are on D 'n Spoon is raring to go.
I would love to see that!

I’m more of an Aussie Rules (AFL) football kind of guy, rather than rugby. But I also watch a bit of rugby too.
We watched LA's kicker try to trip Shaheed on his way for a TD. Was that a legal play in your AFL?
