College football 2022 NFL Draft notes, Week 2: Lacrosse star-turned-QB is faster than Michael Vick per opposing coach
Jared Bernhardt is turning heads at Ferris State, plus a whole lot more
College Thoughts, Part 2
Not a good day for Iowa State QB Brock Purdy against Iowa: 13-of-27, 138 yards, 3 INT. RB Breece Hall had 16 carries for 69 yards.
Iowa DB Matt Hankins had two picks.
I don’t even feel like recapping anything that happens in games like Clemson vs S Carolina State (49-3), West Virginia vs Long Island (66-0), Auburn-Alabama State (62-0), Michigan State-Youngstown State (42-14), Alabam over Mercer (48-14), Georgia-UAB (56-7), etc. These are like preseason games.
Stanford QB Tanner McKee helped the Cardinal beat USC 42-28 by going 16-of-23 for 234 yards and 2 TD. As mentioned last week, McKee is a former prized recruit who took two years off to go on mission to Brazil. He’s now put together back-to-back great games. This is also a second mention for CB Kyu Blu Kelly, who had a pick on Kedon Slovis.
Here’s 87 yards by RB Nathaniel Peat:
It was not a good night for USC QB Kedon Slovis: 27-of-42, 223 yards, 1 TD/1 INT and the loss. WR Drake London had another good game, four catches for 68 yards and 1 TD.
Not a strong night for Texas A&M RB Isaiah Spiller against Colorado: eight carries for 20 yards, though he did have six catches for 56 yards and 1 TD. DL DeMarvin Leal had five tackles 1 TFL, 1 PD.
UNC QB Sam Howell had a better night than Week 1, but it came against Georgia State.
I’m stunned, elated, overwhelmed by the news on Ferris State QB Jared Bernhardt. You recall last week, I wrote about how Bernhardt was the best lacrosse player in the country at Maryland and now is trying football again for the first time since 2015? And in his first start, he threw three touchdowns and ran for four? On Saturday, Ferris State blew out Ashland (unexpectedly) and Bernhardt had 14 carries for 210 yards and two touchdowns. Ashland head coach Lee Owens, a person with over five decades of coaching experience, said that he’s seen Michael Vick play in college from the sidelines…and he’s never seen anyone as quick as Bernhardt.
“I was on the sideline (as the University of Akron head coach in 2000) when Michael Vick was at Virginia Tech. He was pretty fast and athletic,” AU coach Lee Owens said. “I’m going to tell you, I’ve never seen a kid with that kind of quickness. First of all, just the quickness. But also the acceleration and the speed.
“We can run in the secondary. We’ve got guys who are fast. He just went by us.”
ASU QB Jayden Daniels went 20-of-29 for 175 yards, 2 TD, 1 INT, 13 carries for 122 yards against UNLV, and they’re probably not a good team.
We’ve talked about Fresno State QB Jake Haener, the former UW Huskies QB. He faced Cal Poly on Saturday, going 17-of-22 for 380 yards, 4 TD, and he also rushed for 2 TD.
San Diego State blew out Arizona, and RB Greg Bell had 125 yards on 17 carries. WR Daniel Bellinger had three catches for 113 yards and 1 TD.
The Huskies are terrible. Michigan won 31-10, with Blake Corum rushing for 171 yards on 21 carries and Hassan Haskins rushing for 155 yards on 27 carries. Michigan only needed 44 passing yards. Senior DE Aidan Hutchinson had 2.5 sacks, giving him 3.5 on the year.
Oregon State RB B.J. Baylor had 18 carries for 171 yards and 3 TD against Hawaii.
Florida State is in trouble too. They lost 20-17 to Jacksonville State on Saturday and QB McKenzie Milton (former UCF QB, back from devastating injury) went 18-of-31 for 133 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT. Senior DE Jermaine Johnson II had 2.5 sacks and he now has 4 sacks on the season.
Indiana QB Michael Penix did not bounce back, despite facing Idaho, and despite his team winning 56-14. Penix went 11-of-16 for only 68 yards with 2 TD.
Liberty QB Malik Willis went 13-of-18 for 154 yards, 2 TD, 20 carries for 93 yards, 1 TD against Troy.
I think as the season goes on, you’ll see a lot less from me on QBs, a lot more on other players, once some of these passers prove they really aren’t 2022 NFL Draft-worthy.
North Texas RB DeAndre Torrey had 16 carries for 71 yards against SMU. Last week, Torrey had 244 rushing yards, which is why I’m checking in on him. Teammate WR Roderic Burns had 12 catches for 145 yards. He now has 259 yards through two games.
SMU QB Tanner Mordecai had 312 yards, 4 TD, and he now has 11 TD through two games.
CB Emmanuel Forbes, a 2023 draft prospect, had 5 interceptions as a freshman at Mississippi State in 2020. He had 11 tackles and 1 sack on Saturday against NC State.
TCU beat Cal 34-32. RB Zach Evans, a 2023 prospect, had 190 rushing yards.
Cal QB Chase Garbers had 309 passing yards with 2 TD. WR Trevon Clark had two catches for 122 yards, with both catches going over 50 yards. Senior LB Cameron Goode had two sacks. Goode had 9.5 sacks two years ago. Pick-six for S Daniel Scott.
There were 999 passing yards in Memphis vs Arkansas State. Memphis won 55-50. I don’t know what you take away from this game but Memphis WR Calvin Austin III had six catches for 239 yards and 3 TD, while WR Sean Dykes had 143 yards and 2 TD. QB Seth Henigan had 410 yards with those 5 TD passes. Even RB Brandon Thomas had 191 rushing yards.
For Arkansas State, two QBs combined to go 42-of-66 for 584 yards, 5 TD. There were no interceptions in the game. WR Jeff Foreman had 198 yards, WR Te’Vailance Hunt had 123 yards.
I wasn’t too high on Texas Tech QB Tyler Shough, he was my last QB in for my top 25. Maybe he’s all the way out now. Shough was 11-of-21 for 163 yards, 1 TD, 2 INTs against Stephen F Austin and Texas Tech barely won.
Kentucky RB Chris Rodriguez had 27 carries for 206 yards and 3 TDs against Missouri. He did lose a fumble.
Mizzou LB Blaze Alldredge had 13 tackles. RB Tyler Badie had 14 carries for 61 yards and 10 catches for 88 yards and 1 TD against Kentucky.
Okay, time to focus on NFL some more! More college updates to come soon.
