What if Cortez Kennedy played for the Seahawks today?
Would Seattle be able to afford a player of Tez's ability now?
I watched a clip on YouTube about Cortez Kennedy this week called “The Unstoppable Man” and my first thought as the hosts recalled his dominant 1992 Defensive Player of the Year campaign was, “Are NFL players still that loyal?”
And yes, at least as as worthy of a question to that is, “Would teams still be that loyal to players if the price wasn’t ‘right’?”
How contracts, free agency, and trades worked in the ‘90s is much different than the salary and transaction side of the NFL today. So I was curious to run a thought experiment specifically centered around what situation the Seattle Seahawks would be facing today if Kennedy was coming off of his third NFL season (which was 1992) and if it seems like a good use of our time, let me know by either hitting the like button or leaving a comment/message and I’ll do it with other former players in the future:
What would Kennedy’s contract situation be?
How much would Kennedy be looking for on his next contract?
What could the Seahawks expect to get in return if they traded Kennedy?
What would the Seahawks ultimately decide to do if they had a 25-year-old Cortez Kennedy on the roster today?
Those are the four questions I will attempt to answer in today’s bonus article for Regular Joes.
