That all-22 vid has some interesting comps with Fowler's style of play. He also points out the lengthy list of DEs improved performance in their first year under Mikie Mac. Our coach is a stud!
I was hoping for Cam Jordan but "In Schneider We Trust", and $5m leaves us absolutely "in the game" if someone later in the offseason, or mid-season, becomes available. We know Schneider/MacDonald will act fast if need be.
Or if Fowler is enough, we've got ˜$20m that can be added to the 2027 cap for the big extensions coming up. Fantastic for the cap if this works out!
Hopefully there won't be an "if need be", that MacDonald's system unleashes the beast in Fowler like it has for so many other defender rebirths under his tutelage.
And if Coach Quinn really liked him, that's a strong vote to me (stronger than Dallas not being willing to keep him for $5m)
What is known about Fowler as a run defender? I realize that sacking and pressuring QBs is his main job, but those are not the only ones. Other than that question this certainly looks on several levels like a smart deal, especially at that price.
I love the Fowler signing. If he stays healthy, his floor will be enough to counter the loss on Mafe, if only for this year. His ceiling is higher than Mafe, again, if only for one year. I’ve been pounding the table for an Edge in round one for two years now. Maybe next year, the third time is the charm. I’ve heard next year’s draft will be heavy with QBs, WRs, and OTs early in the first round. Maybe we’ll luck into an elite edge the way we lucked into Murphy in a similar offensive heavy year.
Which '27 draft edge rushers are looking good to you, Danno? I must admit that I don't follow college football as much as I used to. When you bleed Orange and Seaside Joe calls your favorite team "the worst in college football" it gets a bit depressing and interest wanes. Syracuse has not gotten the football program right since the HC Paul Pasqualoni and Donovan McNabb years. Very poor leadership at SU.
When I lived in NY, my neighbor was a Syracuse Orangman. They did have a much better team back then. He would always talk about Jim Brown. But I guess so would I if he went to my school.
There's a rich history at SU with names like Brown, and Ernie Davis, Floyd Little, Larry Csonka, Tom Coughlin, Art Monk (nephew of Thelonius), Dwight Freeney, and others. Unfortunately none since McNabb. You're right about losing out to powerhouses though. NIL and the transfer portal are killing college sports.
It also seems to be hurting the finished product coming out of college and into the NFL. I’m not so sure professional athletes making 7 figure salaries belong in “college.” Maybe the NFL needs a farm system like baseball. You draft players out of high school and develop them. After 4 or 5 years you either promote them to the NFL club or they are free to sign with any team. Colleges can still have football teams, but they could only award scholarships, as in the old days. You could still have a college draft, even though the best players would be in the farm system. I’m sure a few of the players might go to college because they want an education and a back up plan. It would likely be a 2 or 3 round draft, as the talent would not go deep. Yes Price is going to get a Notre Dame degree, and he may actually have earned it. But for every player like Price, there are 5 who never went to class and just played football and made money.
It’s hard to compete with the powerhouses, and if you get a great HS player, he gets poached in NIL. I have not even begun to think about the 27 draft. It seems so futile before they get to play next season. The top 32 players right now will be completely different by the draft. I don’t even follow others who are already doing mocks. I did see a mock by the NFL Stock Exchange but only noticed 3 QBs and 2 WRs went 1-5 in their draft and saw a post that said the 27 1st round would be heavily loaded with offensive players. If that actually pans out, it will push the top defensive players down and available later in the first round. Even if we pick at 32 again, with 11 picks we could move up in the first round if an elite edge is there. Right now we’re looking at 3 out of 4 of our top edge rushers getting a little long in the tooth.
I appreciate the simplicity of “Price/Fowler beats Cashius Howell/Harris” to breakdown the Seahawks’ draft. Lowest common denominator stuff is invariably the most effective…
The Sanders kid to Pittsburg? MARK MY WORDS, HE'S GOING TO MAKE A NAME FOR HIMSELF. Now, back to our Hawks...
