According to Patriots fans, their run blocking is good. Their pass protection is one of the worst in the league, maybe worse than the Hawks. Something to consider this week. If they can stop the Pats run game, the pass rush should be good enough to create havoc.
Fant also appeared to run the wrong route or chose the wrong option if it was an option route on a goal line throw from Geno with 4:48 left in the third quarter. It looked like Fant had the inside leverage and Geno hit it, but Fant went to the corner.
I would not look too much into this one game. The Broncos also may have a better defense than many think right now. Zach Allen is good and Surtain.
The offense in the second half did very well. Run blocking was excellent and Geno and Tyler were money
About the DL... notice who is one pressure behind Boye Mafe (who was HOT HOT HOT): big dawg Leonard Williams. The DL is going to be just fine--you would think Denver's OL is one of the better units in the league given what they are spending (not always the best indication).
Another myth that should be addressed is the ILB play, and that was mostly fantastic and the best we have seen since KJ and Bobby were back there 8ish years ago. Against Denver, but still... 0 YAC on over the middle throws was something to behold.
DK... he is just not the guy to make a contested catch. It's like he got off his game early with that miss and was basically just a decoy for the rest of the game.
About the OL... last year in the Rams game, the whole offense disappeared because both tackles went out. Granted it was just Fant (and some bad play by rest of the line) but they pulled it together in the second half. If they can accomplish that... I have some optimism that the OL won't be a serious liability going forward and should actually improve as the line gains experience playing together.
But yeah, let's see what next week in Boston looks like. For now, savour the flavour!
We all seemed pretty happy with half-time adjustments. Be interesting to see how the OC and OL coaches change things for next week. I continue to be baffled by Schneider's demonstrated disinterest in OL, although I just looked at last year's first round and it's hard to argue against the choice he made. (For me, anyhow.) It's the pattern that's troubling. We better hope Lucas comes back ready to go and stays that way for the season. That said, it's a 17-round fight. We won the first round without taking significant damage. Now we know some things about ourselves we didn't know before. Jitters are over. Geno will be fine. Everything will be fine. Except the OL. That...can't be solved this season except by unexpected players showing unanticipated promise. (And I'm the pessimist in the room.)
What I keep banging my head against the wall is this. We have cheap RBs and cheaper QB and got rid of Bobby and Diggs and Adams and yet still can’t afford a real Oline? I know Ken has explained the salary cap to us, but man we still haven’t paid Cross his $30 million next year as well as QB cost increase and all the young DBs going to need raises. I want a Trent Williams or Walter Jones type of dominant lineman to just feel like that spot is good. We have basically 5-11 questionable starters every year. At least they grabbed Connor, but why can’t we draft anyone who pans out? Creed Humphrey maybe?😬 when all 5 starters rank in the bottom 20% of the starters at their spot, we are going to have problems. I was hoping it will be better and maybe it will, but they still handcuff our OC and skill positions. Also, agree that Fant shouldn’t have been re-signed. He brings really nothing we can’t get from anyone else
Barry Sanders lasted ten years, crazy long for a running back in todays world. Detroit's
O-Line was never very good, they never had a good passing attack, and their win/loss record was 76-91 over those ten years. Is that what you want from the Seahawks?
It is what it is at this point. Now that Grubb knows what little he actually has to work with, I expect the game plans to have shorter routes to get the wide receivers involved. Maybe Huff can help but you can't fix broken on Laken. He is a lost cause and Stone does not deserve to be playing on our team. He is the worst player on the 53
It's quickness that matters so much in getting separation. DK is big, strong, and fast... nobody accuses him of being quick. It hurts his route running at times, I think.
Although the scoreboard didn’t show it, the reality is the Seahawks dominated this game. The only major concern I have after it is based on a one game sample. The Seahawks probably have the pass blocking guard worst combo in the league. The good news was in the second half the Seahawks gashed 2 high safety looks.
Lots we have yet to see from our very cagey Coach, like Bobo taking on Fant's duties? I was hoping New England would be a team struggling with their own new designs, giving us an extra week to polish our A Game. Not so. Plus we are playing in a stadium that insists on Officials throwing any ties to the Patriots. Expect them to interfere at the most troubling moments. Adjustments made for their O-Line will be on tape for the Miami game... at least we play the Dolphins here. I strongly suspect we shall hear trades happen to find us solid talented big men who can at least hold their ground. My focus is on our first Divisional test in week 6 at home with Frisco, with all these first 5 games being preparation for that. Tonight's MNF will be revealing.
That’s true. But the first half could have been much worse for us the way we played. In the end, we only won by a single score (thank goodness). It was an ugly game. Hopefully our offence gets its shit together from now on.
JSN should really have an absolute minimum of 5 targets per game in every game this season. If he's not getting open, that's on him. However, if he's not getting those opportunities due to scheme and/or QB play, then Grubb needs to fix it.
I did a re-watch of the offense, focusing on the o-line on each play. There were plays by the guards that were some of the worst football I’ve ever seen - just complete whiffs. I was pleasantly surprised watch Conner Williams, however. Easily our best lineman aside from Charles Cross, who has gotten some good recognition across the media over the last 24 hours.
I agree with everything you said - especially on Fant-and DK looked horrible all game! BUT I Have to throw in WHY I am always harping about the O-line - I think this game made it completely, Blatantly obvious WHY the O-line is so Important! Without a decent one you're just not going to be consistent and go where you want to go!!!
I don't think Fant and DK looked horrible. You can't throw the ball to three different people on any one play. They did their jobs. Decisions were made.
I have a tendency to search out the negatives and wait for the other shoe to drop when it comes to my team. I am going to take care of my mental health by giving it some time before I judge whether the run defense is better now, just like SJ said in the piece. I am also going to do the same for all of the individual performances.
Like my wife's band has a sound check before the crowd arrives, then has to work through a 2nd sound check of sorts during the first few songs of the 1st set, I think I may be seeing the same thing with the guys on the field. Camps and 1 preseason drive are their sound check, now they will have to gel together and settle into their groove during these first couple-three weeks.
I was hoping to see them:
- get off the field on 3rd downs... check.
- make better tackles... check.
- not give up so much space and YAC over the middle... check.
I'm stoked at how the defense played. Offense did enough to win. Everyone has to get better, on every team. I don't care about discounting the performance for any reason. They beat an NFL team. Now, maybe they can build on it and find a way to win the next one. (Rinse and repeat).
I am still mentally healthy, for now. Taking it one game at a time.
If the defense is good this year, maybe we can win games with an average offense, hamstrung by poor o-line play. I don't think there is a short term solution on the o-line, other than swapping out Bradford or Tomlinson for Haynes......which they should do this week. Haynes would need to play at least solid, and Bradford would need to improve to some degree. But, that still leaves Forsythe at RT, and he is what he is.......at least until Abe gets back, week 5 at the earliest.
So, Grubb's going to have to work with some degree of liability on the o-line. Williams did keep the middle clean several times so Geno had a place to step up when pressure came off the edge. Cross and Williams played well. But that's only 40% of an o-line.
Big picture, I still like where we're going. It was always going to take a couple of off-season's to sort out the roster. The most important change.....hiring Mike MacDonald....is the change that will lead to eventual success. Love the guy.
I just want to give some love to Tyler Lockett. Seeing him still make ridiculous catches in the Geno Smith era is such a treat. No reason a late-career career season (like Bobby Engram) could be in the works for T-Lock.
According to Patriots fans, their run blocking is good. Their pass protection is one of the worst in the league, maybe worse than the Hawks. Something to consider this week. If they can stop the Pats run game, the pass rush should be good enough to create havoc.

Yeah, but every d-tackle in the league is going to gain experience too. The level of play may improve, but the result probably won't.

"Is this true?"
"Yes, it's true. This man has no dick."

I'm hopeful the week to week adjustments will be good too. Not everything has to happen at half-time.

Walker showed us he has some Barry Sanders in him, but for how long with shit play by the OL? Surely, Schneider is all over this.
Barry Sanders lasted ten years, crazy long for a running back in todays world. Detroit's

And DK can’t win one on ones often, which seems weird with his physical talent. So many better WRs at contested catches
It's quickness that matters so much in getting separation. DK is big, strong, and fast... nobody accuses him of being quick. It hurts his route running at times, I think.

I thought the play calling was superbe. Grubb just owned Denver in the second half. Good times ahead.

“…the Seahawks revamped defensive line did not “necessarily” dominate Denver’s offensive line for four quarters…”
Bronco RBs: 20-64 / 3.2
Nix Avg Yd / Pass: 3.28
Nix Avg Yd / Comp: 5.3
Broncos Third Down Efficiency: 5 / 18
Broncos 3-and-Outs: 7
Broncos Total Offensive Yards: 231
If this is not domination, I can’t wait to see what is.
And somehow we still only just won the game.
The game was over in the third quarter when the ‘Hawks took a 26-13 lead. The last Denver TD was a worth-it trade-off of points for time.
That’s true. But the first half could have been much worse for us the way we played. In the end, we only won by a single score (thank goodness). It was an ugly game. Hopefully our offence gets its shit together from now on.
The way that the offense played. The defense was fine.

"I can’t imagine that Malik Willis would have helped the Seahawks beat the Broncos this week."
Sick burn on all those "wtf are they drafting a RB in rd 2 over Willis"-people out there in content-creating land.
Well played, sir.
I'm on the Geno train!

How many passes did DK drop?
