I didn’t have this one on my free agent bingo card. The Seattle Seahawks signed defensive end Demarcus Lawrence on Thursday and it wasn’t for cheap. Lawrence is reportedly getting a three-year contract worth up to $42 million and it has $18 million guaranteed.
Edge rusher has been a sneaky-big need for the Seahawks and this move has consequences for Seattle’s offseason plan that we can only guess at this point:
Will Uchenna Nwosu be traded or released?
Will the Seahawks scratch “Edge” off of their first round needs?
Is Mike Macdonald happy with Boye Mafe and Derick Hall?
Mafe is a 2026 free agent, but he needs to be more consistent next season before signing a long-term extension. Mafe had three sacks in the first three games, but then only three in his last 12. Hall also disappeared for the most part in the final three months and many of his sacks were gifted to him.
The soon-to-be 33 year old Lawrence had three sacks last season, but missed 13 games.
The two years before that, Lawrence played 34 of a possible 34 games and recorded 10 sacks with 21 QB hits. He has 61.5 sacks in 141 games, but is perhaps more needed for his run defense as it pertains to Macdonald’s scheme in Seattle.
What are your thoughts on the Seahawks adding Lawrence this week? Is it just what they needed or too late in his career to expect a significant impact?
Blue chip player at one time. I have no idea if he has any gas left in the tank, but he could be a huge add if he's as good as he used to be.
This is a lot of money for 1) an older 2) recently injured 3) not super productive recently player? It does say up to, but it's still either a 2 year, 9M/year or 3 year 6M/year deal at minimum. Feels a lot like Luke Joeckel pt.2...paying lots at the wrong time...
