I’m always reluctant to leave comments in this chat that sound Seahawky-homer-mastubatory because everyone here is so erudite. But with every move I see a calculated risk with a parachute. No all-in Myles Garrett boom-or-bust. A calm approach to all three facets of the game with equal emphasis. I mean who the hell knows to grab an ST WR for a 7th?? We don’t make splashes so we get less air time. And I don’t know about you guys, but I am totally cool with that. Yes, D-Hall!!

Good comment. And yes if all was rah rah rah then not best look. But I think you can see that most here post pros and cons. Wise critiques of either SJ (who likes when we do bring up things as it can give him ideas for articles or questions his way of thinking), JS, or the players. Yes we love most of the guys but we’re also Seahawk fans first, players second. So keep it up. Think what you want to say and double check it. You’ll get “critiqued” too or likes. So many here have their eyes open in places that not everyone can so maybe you’ll provide insight not yet seen. But when we crush the Whiners, then be 110% “homerish” it’s absolutely allowed.

MacDonald seems to have a way getting Rookies to see they are as good as anybody playing Football. (And yes- I had to look up 'erudite').

Value. That's what it's about. This is tremendous value. $1M in dead cap in this day and age means one thing to me. No bad deals over the past 3 years. None.

Right. This was the least I expected Hall's new contract to be worth, and it almost seems like he could have, and even SHOULD HAVE cost the team more.

When I see Hall at press conferences, I see a guy with great personal qualities who's also built like a sci-fi superhero. I'd rather see a defensive front and edges filled with balanced, versatile players all of whom know the system, deliver some sacks and stuff the run. (Fowler maybe fills this bill, but he's a seasoned vet and should learn fast, like DLaw did).

And yes, this is clearly a "prove it" contract that could light a fire under an already violent beast.

Here's hoping that Mr. Derick Hall get's 3 more Superb Owl Bonuses 'n then gets paid even more on his next contract. Gratitude, Stay Healthy.

Hall is an ascending player - he is young, violent, a leader and like others who have taken “Team Friendly” deals realizes that MM’ does two special things for his defensive players: He sets them up for success (just look at how many players have had their careers skyrocket in production playing under MM - Van Noy, Hamilton, Clowney, Madibuike, etc), and he extends their careers by playing a deep rotation. He also sits injured players to avoid putting their careers at risk.

The smart players (like Jones, Hall and even JSN) realize that playing on a championship level team sets them up for life (media, endorsements, partnerships, investment opportunities, etc).

MM is a great coach that players WANT TO PLAY FOR, and JS is the master at selling and creating Cap Value.

Has there ever been a better time to be a Seahawks fan???

JIMMY JOHNSON's avatar

Nope. We are witnessing the start of something Most Cool.

Schneider is an incredible negotiator but I can't help but wonder if these team friendly deals might be setting up some players for resentment down the line if they outplay their contract. I'm specifically thinking about the Earnest Jones contract right now and this contract could fall into the same boat.

from USA TODAY ~ 1. Seattle Seahawks : Number 1 Defense

"There shouldn't be much debate about the Seahawks' standing after their title run. Not only did Seattle top the league in defensive DVOA, it also set the pace in points per drive (1.48) and yards allowed per carry (3.7). Its most definitive statement, however, came in the Super Bowl 60 dismantling of the Patriots' second-ranked scoring attack. The rout highlighted Seattle's proclivity for letting a deep stable of contributors in on the action, a dynamic that helps quell any concern about the minor offseason attrition. The singular success of the "Dark Side" defense has been cemented. Now, how about a sequel?"

Chris H's avatar

Wow, someone with their eyes open for a change.

Somebody on the Seahawks staff, maybe even JS, has a PhD in Capolodgy.

I'm confident Schneider is a student of Moneyball Accounting.

>>“I know we’re going to win a lot of games and a lot of championships here,” the 25-year-old Hall said. “So, I’m willing to sacrifice whatever everybody else thought I’d be willing to make to be here and with this team.”<< Derrick just said this yesterday.

This mind-set is beginning to take root among our Players? A Repeat will cement it.

The more players like Hall, Jones, and even JSN do that, the more it becomes an accepted and viable practice.

New England was masterful at that, with Brady providing most of the Cap relief. It kept their championship window open for a very long time.

Maybe in Seattle it becomes more of a roster-wide practice?

With Spoon, Leo, Sam, AJ and others soon getting extensions, we will find out if this is a blip or a trend?

My bet is that Sam takes a rich, but still Team Friendly deals when he is up - if that becomes the case, can you spell D Y N A S T Y??

I think this is the issue Pete had to leave before Schneider could implement it. JS will have a set amount budgeted that he will not exceed, as it would force other Players to compromise. We may see Star Players leave, as no doubt serious money will be in play, but it will be over other issues corroding Team First principles. My bet is all kinds of quiet perks are available. Brady started something. JS will finish it.

All of the upcoming contracts will be fun to watch, but the two most interesting will be Devon Witherspoon and Sam Darnold, as they will both be high-level tests of JS's negotiating skills.

I get the feeling that if I were to buy a new car from John Schneider, I'd wind up paying $10K over sticker and be happy about it.

Hall is exactly the type of Edge rusher MM wants. He’s likely to be better this year in terms of production numbers in the pass rush game, and his stout ability to set the edge and play the run with 4 lineman (light box) is part of the reason the Seahawks can live in nickel defense. The value of living in nickel can not be overstated in terms of what MM wants to be a premier defensive unit.
