DK Metcalf trade scenario: I just want to explain the salary cap to Mike Salk
Seahawks could trade DK Metcalf if they wanted to, but Mike Salk misunderstands a lot about the Chiefs and Seattle's spending habits: Seaside Joe 1809
First of all, if you are reading this and you are Mike Salk of the Seattle Sports radio show “Brock & Salk”, let me start by thanking you for interviewing the Seahawks head coach every week and securing that insight behind the scenes for fans. From Pete Carroll to Mike Macdonald, it has been helpful and has given us answers to questions that couldn’t have been cleared up in the immediate post-game aftermath each week. You have also asked some tough questions that a lot of people may have been fearful to bring up and I find that to be commendable.
Also, I’m sorry you are being “ratio’d” on Twitter for bringing up a scenario that may actually be quite valid if the circumstances were different, to the point you have to defend yourself by starting your post with “This isn’t clickbait” (as someone who has felt the wrath of social media’s quick trigger many times to call “clickbait” for any topic some people simply don’t want to imagine, I know the feeling and I would suggest just muting the conversation: I’m here to confirm as a writer of 15,000+ articles that Salk’s post is NOT clickbait), because I think it shows integrity on your part to post something you had to know would get a negative reaction.
The vast majority of people in your position would NEVER voice thoughts like, “Popular Player=Better to Trade?” even though I KNOW everyone gets those ideas sometimes. Other content creators, be it writers, radio hosts, podcasters, or someone who thinks their Twitter account is very special and shouldn’t be blasted with “the ratio” instead self-censor themselves out of fear. I actually trust you MORE now because you’ve proven to me that you’re not afraid of Twitter, not only by posting the idea for the first time and getting ratio’d, but re-posting it from your own account AFTER some people accused you of clickbait and refusing to back down.
Whether I agree or disagree with someone’s opinions, I’ll always respect them for it if that’s what they actually believe and they have laid out their case. Good on you for that. My only issue with your article is not that you proposed a DK Metcalf trade—I actually addressed the topic myself one week ago—it’s that your facts weren’t straight.
If Salk’s got it wrong, who else has it wrong? Probably most people. That’s fair—I’ve obsessed with the salary cap almost everyday for the last 14 years and I still lack the confidence to say I fully understand it because I know that I don’t and I’m prone to making mistakes—but let me try and set the record straight as I understand it:
Trading DK Metcalf might be a good strategy in theory. However, any argument that the Seahawks can “make the roster better” and “copy the Chiefs spending strategy” to “save money” on what they spend at receiver shows a misunderstanding of the salary cap, in both Seattle and Kansas City.
So Mike—sorry, Salk—here is where you went wrong.
