What is my take on DK Metcalf? There is something that doesn't fit right with me. For one, the timing of the announcement is in poor taste just hours after the release of Tyler Lockett to steal the attention away from what Tyler was due. Why? Is there bad feelings between the two, or with the organization? The Seahawks and DK's people have been talking for weeks. Did those conversations go south? The feeling is that Metcalf wanted top receiver dollar for a bit above average production. Possibly, that is the discord. With that kind of value, it is best to get a younger receiver with potential and less money. It is good for the Seahawks to come out from under the heavy cap responsibilities. This gives Coach MacDonald the opportunity to build his own team's identity with existing talent, younger (cheaper) players, and with an experienced coaching staff without having to do a total rebuild.
One thing about DK: He drew double coverage and enabled JSN to get open. If JSN is your new 1, you’re going to need an X or someone equivalent. When Seattle had nothing but undersized receivers in their SB glory days, those receivers were also purely clutch — and their line was dominant. To make Kubiak’s system work you need tight end play that works in the run and the pass. And you do really need an X. So it will be interesting to see how this get’s constructed. Because JSN is probably a lot less great if he’s drawing doubles and the other guys can’t get separation. Yeah, DK didn’t have great hands. He dropped way too many balls along the sideline, and while he’s great at catching contested balls over the middle, he lacks a certain a knack for creating space when he does that, so his YAC was often about mistakes by the defense, not by somehow squirting free, and that’s why he was often banged up. There’s some sort of instinct missing there, to go down when there’s no possible YAC and to cut through when there is. He just doesn’t have that.
As for the rest of the squad, cutting or keeping, Ernest Jones sure was good and if the price is right and his knee is right, he feels foundational.
And as for flushing 2025, I think that’s philosophical. I don’t buy the idea though that Seattle replacing the Rams last year as the division winner means they’d have any shot of going further than LA did. Nor do I think they’re just a few trades away from that. Look at how ferocious Philly was last year. Look at the Bills, who came into Seattle and pasted the Hawks, and yet weren’t quite good enough to defeat KC. It tells you that the margin is still pretty far, and to get even remotely close is going to take a while, and might still be impossible. The Ravens, for example, are a much better team, and last year felt inevitable. So that’s instructive. And sobering. Keeping Geno or not, 2025 still feels like only a stepping stone.
Why I posted that I think Fant could be kept. No he is not an X but the big Receiver body and how Coach K likes TEs, he could have a career year without DK. Definitely need someone more than Bobo/White, but don’t have to go crazy. I wouldn’t mind Amari on a one year decent deal assuming his Buffalo rental was just bad fit. Even with horrid QB play year before in Cleveland, he did very well. Or as Mike M said, Shaheed from NO.
I love your optimism Ken. It’s infectious. With this potential cap space now comes the responsibility of spending it effectively, and unfortunately the Seahawks haven’t been the best on that front for some time. I can’t think of a really great free agent addition since…. when was the last great free agent? Cliff Avril and Michael Bennett? Certainly there were others later. I think my memory is going
Dear John. Good job creating spending potential! Now spend aggressively but wisely in free agency, get lucky in the draft, and do it all better than Les Snead.
Truly this couldn't be going any better, other than having already spent some of this money on the OL, is a great start!
Happen to disagree w/you on DK, I've always thought both he and Geno would test the market (as you've said so many times) and then we'd extend both of them. But I also see your arguments on trading him and if it happens, I guess we find ourselves another deep threat.
What I don't understand is why Noah Fant hasn't been cut yet, he's never been worth $13m anywhere (his 2025 cap hit), and he's not a particularly good blocker and Kubiak is going to want a guy that can block, if he's spending $10m+ on a TE. Maybe that cut, or renegotiation, is imminent.
So for me, what's left on the "reconstruct" side (before we start spending our cash) is:
- Geno extension, which vs current cap hit of $44m will free up at least $15m
- DK extension, which vs current cap hit of $31m will free up at least $10m
- Nwosu renegotiation which vs current hit of $21m will free up at least $10m
- Noah Fant cut, frees up $9m
- Dickson extension to free up $1.5m
- Myers extension to free up $1.5m
Which added to what we've already achieved, creates $80m of cap space AND we have a starting QB and and an X wide receiver.
With $80m, can we then please go get two very good OL's, re-sign Jones and Reed, go get a Decker or similar TE that can block, and get a high quality edge? And then build for the future through the draft, 100% BPA?
WRs: JSN, Bobo, Dareke Young, Jaelon Darden, Cody White, John Rhys Plumlee. JSN=100 receptions, everyone else=15
TEs: Fant (48), Barner (30), Russell (0)
I’m not a Fant fan and his cap hit (13.5M) is too high for his production. Even so, I’d want to see how the DK thing plays out before outright dumping Noah.
Sorry Paul disagree about Fant. Especially if we don’t have DK. We have a better OC and I think that helps Fant. NO TEs 100 targets. No DK then need more but would rookie be better than long term starter that Fant is? Not in my opinion. And while overpaid at moment, no DK and rookie WR with Fant makes for cap room for other positions.
Who the heck knows, right. But I think DK is going to find no one other than himself thinks he’s a $30m receiver. In fact these days, even a Jefferson wouldn’t get $30m
And that although it would be nice, there isn’t going to be a decent 3rd rd offer either, think they’ll get offered a 4th bc of the assurances he’ll want of an extension. Risk of him walking after a year is too high to give up a 3rd rd pick.
So yeah I’ve been thinking since Day 1 that for both sides, an extension is the most likely outcome. But I think I’m in a small minority on that one
If the Hawks aren't at $30M ... makes me wonder what they are at?
Hopefully, DK doesn't burn bridges. Just keep it business related and things will be fine. Either he is traded and we move on or he comes back for the price we want. I am fine either way.
But quit with all this play for a "contender" nonsense and dropping info during Tyler's going away party.
I’m kind of pissed at DK for leaking the trade request on a day that should be all about Lockett. It wouldn’t have changed DK’s prospects one bit to wait one freaking day.
To me this says a whole lot about what kind of teammate DK is.
That’s more on the reporter than DK. I doubt DK initiated the topic by calling the person who made it public. May even have been leaked by someone in the office.
No one knows what happened. The lag time was minuscule and it’s not like Metcalf knew Tyler was going to be released. This sequence is as possible as any other:
1. DK/agent leaks request to reporter>
2. Seahawks announce Lockett’s release>
3. Reporter files story about Metcalf’s trade request before anyone thinks to ask him/her to hold off
Today is Christmas morning in Seahawk land!!! DK wanting a trade-great! He can drop passes and get 15 yard pathetic penalties for someone else! Lockett is a CHAMP!! I wish him only the best! We need a proven deep threat and a possession type receiver in place of Lockett… Would Cooper Kupp give us a hometown discount?? Load up on OL and PROVEN EDGE sack master!!
Perhaps DK won’t be so unhappy elsewhere if he gets to be the target more. I also doubt he’ll be taunted and poked on a different team. He’s a standout here so teams try to push his buttons to get those extra yards and hopefully get him evicted from the game.
However, I do not understand the logic to tank the 2025 season. One thing that I have known and that has become very clear to me over the last two days, there are people that are significantly higher on DK than I am.
If we didn't have DK last year, maybe we win 1 less game? So because we are going to lose a WR who isn't even the best WR on the team we should throw our chances in 2025? What? I just can't wrap my head around that logic.
That is before considering what you can get without DK.
Could we get Fries AND Dahlman? I would say, it is possible.
So what is the better team? Dahlman plus Fries or DK with Anthony Bradford and a retired Connor Williams?
I know my answer.
Trading DK should not change the outlook for 2025 at all. This is a great opportunity for what many of us in the chat room (and many other places) have been talking about for years. Build the team from the trenches out. It is time to make that statement.
There are many ways to win in the NFL. There are many varying QB skills that are SB winning QBs. There are differences in WR rooms from great to bad. You can go through most position groups. One of the most constant aspects of a winner in football at all levels, is trench play. It is extremely difficult no matter how good your skill positon players are to win without an O-line.
I like DK, but the news of a potential trade is a great opportunity to focus on the line.
Plan:
Extend Geno
Sign Dahlman
Sign Fries
Draft best player available (draft another DT if he is that good)
Sign a FA speedy WR or ask the Saints about Shaheed
Trade DK for a 2026 1st (or 2nd)
Start extending 2022 draft class if you believe it is time: Cross (yes), Lucas (I would), Woolen (maybe) etc.
WIN THE DIVISION IN 2025
If Howell ain't it ... Keep shooting: draft a QB in 2026 but make him earn the spot over Geno. Nothing given.
Do not ever punt a season. That is not how you build a program.
Seahawks have done an awesome job since 2022 ... Keep stacking!
Love the 'build the trenches' comment. I agree 100%. Extending Geno seems like the best option to remain competitive, and his performance likely goes up if we at least start to address the o-line. There is a limit on term and guarantees I would not cross to get this done however, so it'll be interesting to see if JS and Geno can agree on those parameters.
I would be angling for 2026 picks through trades and trade downs in the draft. Getting a QB this year or next is imperative, to get the QB on the same timeline as the rest of the team. We need Geno (or Geno equivalent) for 2 more years.
I like the price/value for Cousins, but not the prospect of him playing for us. He played terribly last year, and for whatever reason he just rubs me the wrong way. Kind of a silly data point, but there you go.
Anything with Geno $45M and lower for 3 years (really 2 year guarantee) would be great. I don't think it'll come to this but I wouldn't sweat $50M/Yr. But yeah, if Geno is demanding Dak Prescott, then I am ok with testing the market and looking eslewhere.
My issue with some Seahawks chatter is that they severely underrate Geno's talent. Which in turn, suggests, that it will be easy to replace Geno. I do not see it that way at all. Take a look at the Browns or the Bears ... You can get into a very bad QB situation for many, many, many years.
So for me, I am extending Geno. I think he can maintain a high level of play for the next 3-5 years. And I am making a decision on Howell. Does Howell have a chance? In my opinion, I haven't seen anything to suggest that. So keep shooting! Zero in on 2026th draft class. A 2026 rookie QB syncs with Geno's timeline extremely well.
Draft a QB in 2026, let him sit behind Geno for 1-3 years. 1 year could be Penix behind Cousins and 3 years could be Love behind Rodgers.
One thing that I really liked about the RW situation, the Seahawks made the QB win the job. I would like to see that play out again. Any rookie needs to beat out Geno for the job and not handed to. Would be my hope.
I really think the Seahawks are in a great position at the QB spot. Definitely the best in division and one of the best in the league. Just don't mess it up!
The only thing I don't like about the current QB situation is the timeline. We've seen a few QB's play great into their late thirties and beyond, but it's rare air. Brady, Rogers, but damn few others. So yes, Geno could play really well for the next year or two. Possibly beyond that, but that starts to become a statistical improbability. So, the Seahawks need to get a developing QB in here so we don't have a few 'dead zone' years post-Geno, without a average to above average QB.
100% agree. But I think that is what all teams should do. I don't think the Hawks are unique in this situation. Most teams should have a plan A and be developing a plan B.
Which is why to me, the biggest question at QB this offseason is not Geno, it is Sam Howell. We need to make a decision there: does he have a chance? I don't see it but maybe they do. But if not, we need to keep shooting. That could mean Zach Wilson, Anthony Richardson, or that could mean Dart, or that could mean 2026 QB.
We had an interesting discussion yesterday about DK and his trade value. Bleacher Report also did an article today about DK's trade value and they think it's a lot higher. They actually used an article from SSJ in their article, although it was really about Geno (and including Geno with DK in a trade to the Raiders). I tend to lean toward they're just trying to generate clickbait and are overvaluing him myself. I was just happy SSJ got credit for his work to a larger audience.
If we do move DK there is just no reason to keep Geno, there isn't enough offensive talent to make a strong playoff push, at which point spending upwards of 13% of your cap space on an aging QB without All-Pro type talent and an expiring contract is just pissing away money you can roll over to next year or spend on positions that are hard to fill (OL).
Unrelated: did you see a marked increase in views yesterday? Seaside Joe was quoted in the Bleacher Report article on DKs trade request which I hope is bringing you in some new readers.
I’m gonna pull a Nancy Reagan and JUST SAY NO to Kirk Cousins. I don’t care if he knows Kubiaks system or not. I watched his last season and he was atrocious. No thanks.

Jason Myers has been a pretty good free agent signing. Yeah, just a kicker but a damn good one.
Ah right! I don't discount that, Myers has been good.

I am reading this correctly that you believe it is more likely DK is going to be back?
That is what I was wondering yesterday. I wonder what the chances are that DK will be back? It can't be 0. Is it 50/50? 25% chance he is back?
I have no idea. Seems like you think there is a pretty decent chance
Who the heck knows, right. But I think DK is going to find no one other than himself thinks he’s a $30m receiver. In fact these days, even a Jefferson wouldn’t get $30m

I agree ... this offseason is going very well. I was on the fence about whether or not to keep DK, but now that he has made the decision for use, this is going great. Plus this article from Joe was extremely compelling: https://www.seasidejoe.com/p/dk-metcalf-seahawks-extension-trade-rumors?r=1racqs&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web&showWelcomeOnShare=false
