Geno Smith makes so much sense for the Bears: Does this 3-way trade proposal work for Seahawks?
If Geno Smith ended up as a bridge QB for the Bears, would that leave Justin Fields in Seattle? Seaside Joe 1830
When I started to write this article it was going to be a different format that had multiple scenarios for how the Seattle Seahawks could re-shape their roster, but then the first part about Geno Smith’s fit with the Chicago Bears was so compelling to me that I ran out of room for anything else.
I won’t be the first person to note that Smith might actually find Chicago’s offense to be more familiar to him than the one he ran for the last two seasons in Seattle. I’ve even touched based on it here and there myself already. And I won’t be able to claim that there’s any basis for proving that John Schneider did have or would have conversations with the Bears about trading for Smith.
Trying to predict a trade is like trying to predict an earthquake: Even if you somehow get it right, you only got lucky and you destroyed a good city for no reason.
It’s especially ludicrous to try and predict a trade when there are no rumors, no murmers, no inklings since the Seahawks guaranteed Geno’s 2024 contract terms that Seattle is entertaining deals for him. If anything, it’s the opposite.
Maybe that influenced the news contained in a report from Bleacher Report on Thursday afternoon that the Seahawks “have informed Geno Smith he will be on the roster in 2024 under his current contract.’’
The report further stated, “Smith has received commitment from Seattle’s front office.’’
I will honor those rumors and Geno’s contract terms as best I can—the Seahawks don’t save any cap money if they trade Geno before the summer, only the actual $12.7 million in cash he’s due as a base salary—but I also can’t ignore what makes so much sense to me. Instead I’ll put it like this, which is that if I was Schneider I think what I would want to do is put in a call to Chicago’s GM and ask:
“What do I gotta do to put Geno Smith in a Bears uniform for you?”
