It’s actually happened. The Seattle Seahawks have traded Geno Smith to the Las Vegas Raiders and are getting back a third round pick, according to Adam Schefter.
Assuming there is no funny business with the contract, the Seahawks save $31 million in cap space with this move. With DK Metcalf on the trade block — and the Raiders as a reasonable destination — Seattle could save another $18 million in cap space with that move as well.
That would give the Seahawks extraordinary buying power in the market — they should have the most cap space in 2026 already — and it opens the door for anything to happen at quarterback. Including Kirk Cousins, if he is released by the Falcons and Seattle wants him to reunite with Klint Kubiak.
Ian Rapoport immediately added that the Seahawks are in the market for Sam Darnold.
My history with expecting the Seahawks to part with Geno this offseason is extensive and this continues the “most financially responsible offseason” series being 100% accurate thus far.
Just one week ago, I wrote that Seattle had to let Geno test the market before agreeing to a new contract.
Two months ago, I wrote that Geno made no sense as the Seahawks “bridge” quarterback because of his contract. The $6 million incentives he earned in Week 18 probably made him more expendable, not less.
And I’ll be the first to admit that I didn’t think the Raiders would trade for Geno, but that was also before they got turned down by Matthew Stafford. Once Las Vegas failed to land Stafford, few options existed other than Geno and it’s clear the Raiders want an experienced quarterback this season.
Now Geno Smith is in the AFC and the Seahawks are in the market for a quarterback. Seattle should be BETTER — not worse — with the offseason they’ve had so far:
Released 5 players, including Tyler Lockett
Hired Kubiak to replace Ryan Grubb
Traded Geno for a 3rd round pick
DK Metcalf on the trade block
Tendered Brady Russell and Josh Jobe
GO! TALK ABOUT IT IN THE COMMENTS! THE SEAHAWKS TRADED GENO SMITH!

Ian Rapoport immediately popped "Sam Darnold" into the chat as a QB the Seahawks are going to explore. That's discouraging, to be honest, but he could still end up taking a one-year contract wherever he goes.
To me, the Seahawks are going to be a better team based on their offseason moves so far.
Breer: Seahawks offered the Raiders Geno Smith and DK Metcalf for EDGE Maxx Crosby; Raiders "quickly" declined.
