I think the best off-season move isn't in the list which is the hiring of Klint Kubiak and his guys. I think that will have the biggest impact on the O line and gives me some faith it will improve even without a splash signing.
Uchenna Nwosu just took a $9M pay cut, and I can see SSJ hammering out another brilliant "I told ya so" article. This is the best money I've ever spent!
The shake up was needed ! I am now waiting with breathless anticipation for the coming season line issues and all , If the line is moderately better with our D that will be top 5 good things will come our way .Hawks WILL be playoff bound .
The trades not made: the trades are all fine and good, the defense seems to have gotten better, something we might have expected with a defense oriented coach. But I am not impressed with the moves on the offensive side of the ball. A lot of shuffling of the hands people, which appear to have been mostly about money. But the elephant in the room seems to have received little attention. I read a few comments over the last 9 months suggesting that the offensive line might need just a bit of tweaking. I worry that Darnold will suffer the same fate as Gino did for the same reasons. Frankly I think you could bring in most any QB and expect poor results if more effort isn’t focused on the Oline. It seems that replacing Gino with Darnold is thought to be a ‘fix’ but honestly I fear that Sam will not fare as well as Gino did if big improvements are not made to the Oline before the season starts. JS went for the shiny objects wen he should have gone to work on the most glaring needs first.
I gave a C for the DK trade just based on compensation; it's a net zero in draft picks and I think a 2026 3rd added in is closer to a true reflection of DK's value.
Demarcus gets an A because it looks like straight good $ value.
Has anyone else noticed that the two most Pete Carroll-y players wanted out, and that the one who didn’t wind up with Pete wound up with a coach a lot like him? Anyway, Geno and DK are water under the bridge now. Best of luck to both.
The net for Metcalf isn’t bad: A #2, Kupp, MVS, and presumably a veteran offensive lineman yet to be signed.
As for Geno, well, I’m going to be optimistic. Five years from now, he’ll be out of football whereas Darnold may be in the middle of an 8-9 year run as a top NFC QB.
We’re not counting the hiring of Kubiak? I think that’s a huge plus for this off season. Off course he could turn out to be less than stellar, but I’m very optimistic that he will fix the run game and find ways to help the QB function at a high level.
I am very excited at the prospect of the Hawks getting back their smashmouth persona. A top defense and a strong running game would do wonders in this regard.
Yes. And few things will improve a passing game as much as a running game that demands the attention of the defense. The defensive linemen need to first play their run gap assignments before rushing the passer. Play action can’t be effective at delaying the pass rush if there’s no need to respect the run. I’m with you on this.
I wasn’t thrilled with the kupp signing at first, but after sitting on it for a bit i find myself liking it more and more. I know about his injury history, age, and everything, but I also just really like that i trust him. The dude is just solid. He’s not just gonna be some flyer who we’ve sort of heard of that was drafted high and was supposed to be good but wasn’t, but maybe it is because he wasn’t given the opportunity, or maybe just wasn’t in the right “system.” It seems like usually those guys actually just kind of suck for reals. Kupp is proven. He is old, but i don’t think he is ever gonna suck at playing football. Just hope he can stay healthy…
Let's be honest, Gino wanted 45 mill or he wanted to be traded. So long Geno and don't let the door etc. etc. etc. Signing a younger, better, QB for much less and picking up a 3rd round pick was a great move.
DK wanted 30 mill plus. Goodbye DK. We save 20 mill and got a 2nd round pick plus Cooper Cup. Love it.
And we got cap space and 5 picks on the top 99. What's not to like?
The only caveat I have is that JS must now use all that to fix the OL and whatever else we need.
I made a joke the other day that if we wanted to get cheap at QB ... Why not just go with Danny Dimes?
But I found this very interesting.
I ended up looking up Dimes and Darnold's career numbers ... And they are basically identical in terms of advanced stats. (83 total QBs with 320 min plays since 2018)
EPA/play
24) G Smith
...
50) Danny Jones
51) Darnold
CPOE (Comp % over Expected)
1) Brees
2) R Wilson
3) GENO SMITH!!!
...
43) Jones
49) Darnold
Success Rate
17) Geno
44) Daniel Jones
46) Darnold
Danny Jones is 27 years old was drafted 6th overall has led a team to the playoffs
Darnold is 27 years old was drafted 3rd overall has led a team to the playoffs
Would Seahawks fans view a Daniel Jones signing the same way the view Darnold? Why not? Daniel Jones would've saved even more money and they have been basically identical QBs from an advanced stats perspective.
We don't go with Jones because Darnold had last year and the coaches think he has turned a proverbial corner and grown as a QB. Jones arm is weak and his mobility is his strength, he has been consistent to get those numbers you cite. Darnold's story of experience and learning hasn't been the same as Jones'. Darnold at least put a great season on tape, showed flashes of improvement at previous stops, and came at a low cost because of the past poor seasons. Jones has had nothing but past poor seasons with very little improvement shown. Jones was more of a risk.
I think we went with Darnold because of the familiarity with Kubiak.
But I just found the comparison very interesting.
I actually like Daniel Jones potential as a reclamation project also. But I also think Seahawks fans are looking at the world through rose colored glasses a bit similar to the Giants after the 2022 season when Jones took them to the playoffs and got the big contract.
Jones 2022 compared to Darnold 2024 season
Anyways, time will tell. Just thought it was very interesting.
In a way, are we not doing something similar to what the Giants did after extending Jones for 1 season to the playoffs? What makes Darnold's risk profile different from Jones' in 2022/2023?
Geno is gone. We now have Darnold. Can we now move on and give some support and/or positivity for who we have? I’d be very happy if I never heard the name Geno again in these otherwise excellent comments. He no longer has any bearing on what now happens with the Seahawks. Let’s all move on for sanity’s sake. Please.
What is going to happen with the offensive line. Do we have the guys on the team now and the coaching hasn't been good enough? The draft or FA doesn't seem to be doing us any good. We got lucky a couple years ago with the #9 pick.
I'd like to be happy for what's happened to this point but I don't see any change in the result as long as you continue to run with a bottom 5 offensive line
Draft has consistently been good at bringing in guys to play oline. JS entire career with Hawks has been finding and bringing in quality oline. He just doesn’t spend the money to keep them. It’s a league wide problem. It’s not isolated to Hawks. Tunsil wasn’t good. Becton was terrible. Giants passed Cross took a different guy who isn’t even playing. Numerous failures because Oline at college isn’t ready for NFL. Becton big money now but first several years he was a bust. He wasn’t ready. College game is bad. Seahawks have consistently drafted OLine well. They don’t pay to keep them other than LT. Money spent for new coaches to teach NFL oline. CBA likely greatest impact is oline not allowed to hit in practice.
As the adult child of an academic, let me suggest that we're giving out midterm grades here. There's another midterm after the draft, and a final grade when we break training camp.
So far I'm inclined to trust that Schneider (a) knows more than I do, which is presumptively true, and (b) has adapted to new information (say, the value of IOL players in the open market), and (c) is listening to position coaches, to his OC/DC and HC when making and not making deals for free agents. Hopefully they're bringing in guys who fit their system, and I'm inclined to believe in their system far more than I believed in Grubb's. (And we didn't grade the coaching hires, which also counts for a lot, imho).
I'm not too woried about Kupp, who's worth it if he simply helps us torch the Rams twice this year, and for the story. I'm trusting that Durde knows Lawrence well enough to believe he has value. In both cases I think they're also locker room hires, guys who will lead by example, who've been and done (and aren't...done...sorry).
And I'm not unhappy JS hasn't signed IOL help. I'm not convinced we lost out on anyone who would have been a difference maker, and I suspect we dodged a couple bullets in the (not so much of a) bargain. Time will tell.
This is all very weird. I'm not typically a JS fan. And yet...I think he's done right well so far.
'This is all very weird. I'm not typically a JS fan. And yet...I think he's done right well so far'
Funny...I was thinking the same thing. He's making moves a actually agree with so far for the reasons you laid out, now he just needs to successfully navigate a draft with lack of top end talent (pundits words not mine) and seemingly good depth (again, not my words). Should be interesting, and entertaining if nothing else. Go Hawks!
With JS's willingness to trade down to get more picks (I believe in the past those moves were mostly his doing, not Pete's), and his admitting he is not loathe to move up or down, this type of draft should be right up his alley. We have the potential to find starters at multiple positions, even if none have HOF or multi-All-Pro potential. Seems like we could end up with an all-around balanced team coming out of this training camp.
I gave JS an "A" for Geno, DK and Sam. I gave him a "C" for Kupp and Lawrence because I'm really leery of giving old guys with injury histories a good chunk of money. I don't blame JS for not signing that guard the Vikings signed... no physical and a 5 year top of the market contract? That's just nuts.
At this point in his career, Kupp is a useful Joe Jurevicius #3. Hopefully, his snap count will be reduced and the Hawks can squeeze a few more games out of him. It’s hard to believe that he won’t miss a few games, though.
So far in his career, MVS is a one-trick pony. It’s fair to wonder how much he will be on the field. I don’t see him and Kupp as the equal of Metcalf and Lockett, even given Tyler’s decline.
One of the Day 2 picks will be used on a receiver.
Agreed Bob. Everyone on here seemed to want Fries. No physical. Been hurt and an AAV of $22 mil. That was scary. Maybe it works out. But I’m glad we stayed away.
It was and is being addressed. Coach K and the multiple assistants brought in to teach these guys and coach them up. Massive investment in coaching and style of play calling. Now just need to get the top 5 in place at beginning of camp to play together as a single unit. And ideally keep injuries at bay.
I totally, 100% hope the new coaches are a huge improvement. I believe there is a paper thin difference in the middle 80% of NFL athletes and coaching makes more difference than talent for most of that middle group.
I think the best off-season move isn't in the list which is the hiring of Klint Kubiak and his guys. I think that will have the biggest impact on the O line and gives me some faith it will improve even without a splash signing.

The others all got Bs.
AND we didn't have to overpay for a guy who, although is very talented, also has his issues.
And Ucheena has agreed to a real pay CUT. Cap savings of $9 mil. Cash cut. That’s great. Let’s hope he is finally fully healthy.
I’m “Incomplete” until the season is over.
Has anyone else noticed that the two most Pete Carroll-y players wanted out, and that the one who didn’t wind up with Pete wound up with a coach a lot like him? Anyway, Geno and DK are water under the bridge now. Best of luck to both.

Geno! I guess it doesn’t matter not that he’s no longer a Seahawk, but autocorrect seems to want to change his name to be spelled with an i.
At least it didn't want to use a "Y", THAT woulf be more embarrassing
I thought this was you doing the grading when it popped up on my phone. Nicely done. Love how you engage us all.
