- I couldn't really put Tyler Lockett in there for a good game or a bad game, but he did make that clutch catch in OT even as he was getting the DPI call. It's like, if you could somehow give Tyler Lockett DK's body to play in, what a receiver that would be.
- Jerome Baker's injury is not serious per MM
- Spoon maybe gets a Medium this week, what do you think? Not many games when he's not Hot.
- Tackling was worse than last week. Its going to get ugly if there aren't reinforcements to clean up those tackles. Mafe's tackling is more worrisome.
- Hard to believe that Anthony Bradford was getting into Keion White's face given how terrible he's played.
- Julian Love maybe a Hot game if not for the touchdown.
- Oh the middle 8 minutes: The Seahawks had back-to-back possessions. Well, maybe bare minimum acceptable would be to get 6 points. Ideally 10 points. And really 14 points would be best. Seattle got 3 points. And it nearly cost them the game. Bad management and execution in the middle of the game.
- Better game for Dee Williams as a returner.
- Seahawks now go for it on fourth-and-1 sometimes. I'm happy about that. But I'm even happier that Macdonald didn't go for it at the end of the game.
- I like Michael Dickson. I want him to be better. Inconsistent today.
All good adds, from what I could tell just reading about the plays. I'm guessing Conner wasn't stellar either, so we have this soft belly in the middle of our OL -- which makes Geno's game all the more impressive. I mean, Burrow didn't even get 200 yds against these guys last week....
There isn't much In-game-analysis with Fox anymore, as they switch fast to commercials. So it's no surprise we don't hear who made PBU's, penalties, etc. CBS seems a bit better with this.
I'm wondering, without having seen the game, whether Conner is struggling with weak guards on either side of him. And the injury he's coming back from.
Re Lockett, haven't rewatched but in regular time besides his catches didn't he draw 2 DPI which kept drives alive? Maybe just add DPI yards to rec total & call him medium
Re Lockett/DK juxtapose, I think about that all the time.
NFL great receiver vs. NFL great athlete.
If Hawks are going to go for it on 4th & short using QB sneaks, need to choreograph better - the 2nd sneak Geno's head & upper body was so high above the pile he was nothing more than a target to get concussed.
Re: assuming Cross played well... check out the block on Charb's TD. Without benefit of any replays, yet, I remember Cross blocking his man, then following through to shield w more guys. He created the entire gap for Charbs to run through.
Google "Reddit NFL streams." Pick the Seahawks game at or really close to kickoff time. I like the StreamEast choice best, usually. But from time to time you have to pick another. And there are popups before you can play it. Do NOT click on those. Just shut them down. And after 2 hours, you will have to refresh and do that all over again. I'm a fan of doing that at halftime, even though it's not forcing you to, just to avoid missing game action.
Unfortunately wasn't able to watch the game live so was on NFL.com reading the play by plays. Man, it felt so much like last year reading those "Stevenson for 9", "Gibson for 8" all the time. I did obviously some stops too we might not have gotten last year, but everyone on the planet knew the Pats were going to have to run it and still gave up a buck 85 or whatever it was. Kinda discouraging.
One thought going through my mind was it's more difficult to disguise your coverage and your pass rushers when they're just going to pound it. Given how strong our CB's and safeties are, do you think OC's are going to take a page out of the Pats playbook and just pound the rock against us here forward?
The Pats basically got nothing in the pass game other than to their TEs, so I think overall the pass defense was solid. The run D though was "inconsistent". It will be interesting to see how much that changes when Nwosu gets back.
For this week at least, it is Geno who was HOT HOT HOT! Given no running game, the outcome rested completely on Geno's arm, and he delivered. He could have had a monster day without the drops from DK and JSN on catchable balls. DK, without the "no contest" ball for a TD would have been "Mild". I will add AJ Barner to the Mild list because of the critical-at-the-time holding call (although they didn't show a replay to know whether it was legit or just a 'make up' kind of call).
About Mafe... that sack was called a 'coverage sack' on the play but Brisset bailed when he felt the pressure and Mafe chased him down. If the LT does his job and Mafe isn't in position to get a hand on the running back, nobody would fault him for the 45 yard gain... Mafe was still engaged by the LT while he was trying to wrap the RB so I don't think in that case we can be too hard on him there.
I wish Noah Fant would play like he cared. Two drops where the ball is in his hands. He has the physical ability, but I’m understanding what Bronco fans thought when he was there.
If the Hawks were keeping one TE from last year I wish it had been Parkinson.
I’m pleased that 2.5 of my 4 visions came true. JSN went off. Mafe got a sack (but Witherspoon didn’t), no INTs, but a Seahawks win. I’ll take it.
I think he cares, he just isn't that good. But agreed with the point. His drops just stand out for some reason...I think it's because Geno put it right in his hands.
I wish Noah Fant played like he cared feels really accurate. I don't know if it's a skills or effort problem but always looks like he could/should have done more. My biggest memory of him this game was getting blown off the line while running "blocking"
Geno threw him a high ball over the middle in crucial play. He didn't elevate and it still went through his hands. I can still recall when Rookie TE Dissly came in and caught everything thrown at him after watching everyone else play at half-ass effort speed. Fant has me all the way back to those days. Maybe we fail to instill proper motivations for TE's?
Carrying over from last year, Noah Fant and Dremont seem to be minus players on the field especially compared to salary. Here's to hoping that in year 2 of the new regime, these two are gone and we develop the younger guys or draft replacements.
Tackling will be fine. Those backs are tough runners and Jerome Baker got injured. Chenna will be back soon as well.
This was the most stressful game I've watched in... okay not that long but at least a year. I try to keep negativity out of the chat, but it was all I could do when Grubb kept running ZC up the middle against their bigs and it kept not working. I'm probably more down on Charbs than anyone on the roster not named Noah Fant. I don't expect too much from rookie O-linemen, let alone those taken after the first 45 picks or so. But Charbonnet was a 2nd round running back at a time when the league has devalued the position almost criminally. What makes this guy draftable at a similar slot to K9 or James Cook? His play today reminded me of when Travis Homer would have to get touches. He's a decent backup, but I didn't see the bruising style that would wear the defense down that I expected. Your boxer analogy was on point. It it got to where I felt like we needed to get the 7th rounder some touches. He made a play that saved the game, but had a lot of responsibility in us needing the game saved to begin with.
A lot of this may have been on the O line. I obviously haven't rewatched the game yet. But all I am hoping for right now is that K9's oblique heals quickly.
To my eyes, the defense guessed wrong and missed tackles at a much higher rate than last week. And sure, there are other pro football players on the other side of the ball who are going to get theirs. But damn, I lost count of the number of times we had Jacoby Brissett smoked like a Jacoby Brisket (blame autocorrect for me making that joke) and he shook off a sack and made something happen. At least it wasn't Riq and the rest of our backfield not named Witherspoon for a touchdown like last season, I guess.
A win is a win, and it shouldn't feel bittersweet just because I underestimated the opponent. But that can still be true and this team have a long way to go to be anywhere near championship form. It's only week 2 and we're 2-0 and I like our chances against the Dolphins next week. We're in the driver's seat going forward. May health and smart play calling be on our side. Go Hawks!
I think Charb didnt have such a bad day. One defender was never enough to bring him down, I think with decent run blocking he would had a really good performance
I'm with you here, Fabian. Underdog Patriots (at Home/Opening day) were pissed. We are lucky to escape without serious injury. Still, Grubb quit sending him plays, which tells me he wasn't seeing what is expected. What was the count on pass/run plays?
I have to disagree Fabian B. He seems to be a one-trick pony. Run straight. That’s it. That’s predictable and easy to stop, even if a first tackle is broken (as proven on the weekend).
I never bet on a home game, much less an Opening Day Game, where the visiting team are favored over the home team. Nothing gets to Big Men like disrespect in Their House. Those are games where extreme underdogs wake up for a day. Last I saw, we were 3.5 favorites. We didn't cover, so I give them that. Niners at Vikings by 5? I think not...
New England looked better than expected before the season started. It appears that they also found a good, young defensive minded HC. They knew that The Hawks have had a bad rushing defense for awhile now and had the backs to follow a heavy ground attack offense. Credit to them for not outsmarting themselves.
The Hawks made fewer egregious mistakes than last week, kept things close and then let Geno do his magic one more time. Honestly it looked like a classic Pete game (as did last week, actually), which is fine since his era was the best in Hawk history. The team looks more disciplined than the last couple of years, but they are still clearly learning the new systems. That said, I’ll take a road win any time!
BTW- The Cardinals look legit. The Hawks have a better record, but they might be a scarier team right now.
A couple of other thoughts: Geno played a fantastic game, and that's coming from me, who always wants us to draft a QB I like every draft to eventually succeed him. I kind of hope we extend Geno and Myers. I feel like we have too much talent on offense to be this average. Noah Fant was my least favorite TE of last year but I was cool that he was the one they kept because of potential and draft pedigree/ceiling. I take back being okay with that now. Parkinson would have been the best choice, followed by Dissly. I also take back saying "in JS/PC we trust" when they drafted Dee Esk over Creed Humphries, who we all wanted. The freedom that would have allowed us in future selections/free agency is wild to think about. For a UDFA Bobo is a really good blocking receiver and a respectable catching receiver. And No-E might just have another year left in him. I don't know if I would pay DK what the market will bear, but I would also hate to lose him. Looking at the numbers after the game, it surprised me that DK passed JSN in yards. When we needed a 1st down, JSN was our guy.
On D, Love looks promising -like rising star promising in spite of a couple miscues. Spoon had a pretty good day, in spite of the boneheaded shove. And even if he was pushed (I didn't see it), he could have had better body control. And kept his composure better after penalties, right or wrongly called. I don't recall hearing Riq's name called until late in the game, and that's a good thing. Byron Murphy looks like he might be a jersey choice really soon; and if we're lucky enough to have him, Big Cat and 'Chenna all at once we should have ourselves a defensive front. Knight didn't seem to ruin anything, but we have passed on a lot of LBs the last couple of years and they are going to matter for Mike Mac's system. I don't love our starters thus far and our depth seems ST players.
Most important take? Seahawks went on the road and got a win. That's hard to do in the NFL.
And they're in the first place in the NFL West. Would be nice to build a lead while McCaffrey is out for SF. Would also be nice to put their fan base in panic mode as they try to catch up with the surging Seahawks! Interested to see where the pundits put the Seahawks in the power rankings.
Even though JSN had big numbers, dropping an easy first down on a 1st and 20 down 3 in the 4th quarter is inexcusable. Doesn’t mean he had a bad game but means that it was medium or mild to me. And I don’t remember any tough catches he made.
Fant on the other hand is not safe moving forward. He does not have the pedigree to withstand an easy drop with the game on the line.
The decision not to go for it at the end of regulation is an interesting one. 90% of the time it is an easy decision to go for it. Against any good team you always go for it no matter how little chance you give your offense to pick up less than a yard. This situation against an inferior team without a passing offense may have been correct. I think it was very close.
By the numbers, it increased your chances by 4% to go for it (according to Ben Baldwin 4th down bot). My understanding is that these numbers are based off of historical data. BUT they give the hawks a 65% chance of converting the 4th. If Mike Mac does not trust his interior line to get less than a yard then at a certain point it becomes correct to kick. I was pretty indifferent.
BUT, if you are that unconfindent in picking up a yard then what a horrible 3rd down play call. Also, what does that say about your team that you can’t get a yard? Not great.
In this situation ok. But if this were the lions game? No chance that is right to kick it no matter how bad your line is.
Will be something to monitor moving forward as Mike correctly and efficiently made good 4th down decisions earlier in the game. Went 1 for 2 with the first resulting in a TD (not that it matters).
I also think he missed a timeout at the end of the first half.
Overall, pretty good stuff out of Mike Mac but we got to get a whole lot better at short yardage because almost any other team we need to go for it
Yep … you just hope that if this situation comes up in Detroit or Philly or Arizona etc that Mike Mac doesn’t go “well it worked last time” … no you got to go for it. And if you don’t feel confident? Then that should be the focus in practice all week
If you want to go into Detroit, SF, Philly, and the rest of the big boys in the NFC, you need to get less than 1 yard with the game on the line. Will be very hard to win kicking.
Without Walker we don't have a running game. Charbs 2+ yard per carry is atrocious. I was surprised that Mac and Halani weren't subbed in. Fant needs to benched. How could Barner and Russell play any worse? Geno played great considering he played behind Bradford. They better spend next week finding some upgrades at guard before Geno gets hurt!
Love lived up to his contract and the LBs were good, however it looks like Jones should join Fant on the bench. What a waste of money and playing time. Grubbs play calling was hard to evaluate by Walker's absence. Hope he's back next week.
The good news is we are 2 and 0 and the rest of the NFL West is 1 and 1.
SEA MORE NOTES:

Yeah, Spoon was just "ok" today. Neither of the penalty calls were really legit imo but they did seem to get him off his game.
The shove was a good call, from what I saw on the broadcast. But he played pretty well and I didn't hear Riq's name, which must be a good thing.
There isn't much In-game-analysis with Fox anymore, as they switch fast to commercials. So it's no surprise we don't hear who made PBU's, penalties, etc. CBS seems a bit better with this.

I should have mentioned Love’s blocked FG. It slipped my mind.

I only got to watch the 12-minute YouTube version of the game, but that TD run was all Cross.

I don’t know how many tackles Julian Love made, but the block on the field goal should’ve gotten him more notice here.
His hard stops remind me of a healthy Jamal Adams before he broke his body against such runners.
New England looked better than expected before the season started. It appears that they also found a good, young defensive minded HC. Hall is better than Jones and had another good day.
So true. Jones just sort of…takes up space. Hall is really active.

It all worked out in the end. But on the road, you play to win, not tie. I would go for it on that fourth down every single time without hesitation.
Yep … you just hope that if this situation comes up in Detroit or Philly or Arizona etc that Mike Mac doesn’t go “well it worked last time” … no you got to go for it. And if you don’t feel confident? Then that should be the focus in practice all week
It says you don’t trust your IOL.
Exactly.
I know what I would be working on this week,
If you want to go into Detroit, SF, Philly, and the rest of the big boys in the NFC, you need to get less than 1 yard with the game on the line. Will be very hard to win kicking.
When a team is the underdog at Home on Opening Day, you can bet the Big Men will dig deep to dig in to get a win.
Without Walker we don't have a running game. Charbs 2+ yard per carry is atrocious. I was surprised that Mac and Halani weren't subbed in. Fant needs to benched.
Charbonnet is a starter somewhere as long as “somewhere” includes the XFL. That Schneider could have drafted O’Cyrus Torrence…
He needs to learn how to speak Canadian eh.
FTR's are 0-2 :D.
I suspect Coach Mack see's these opening games as tune-ups, happy as hell to get the wins. Nobody will be harder on Charbs than Charbs.
I gotta say, I thought Tyrice Knight looked decent when he as out there. He didn’t look over-matched to my untrained eye.
I had the same thought.
Why did they never try another running back? I mean my dad used to tell me if you try something over and over and it doesn't work try something else.
Yup, why not McIntosh, since he showed some giddyup pre-season.
Good change of pace back. Hurt?, ball security concern?, or playbook knowledge?
