I love the idea of a top 5 defense.

If they sign Jenkins and Bradbury and draft a RG , I think the OL.will be above average. In what perverted universe is Geno worth 40 mill plus and DK worth 30 mill plus? I'm glad it's not in Seattle! So far I like the moves they made. A good draft ( speed WR, /KR, DB, LB and depth pieces), and we will be competing for the division title. Having said that, if JS can't make it happen with all the cap space and draft capital, he's gone.

If this was plan "B" color me impressed. The potential here is great and truly what appears to be a commendable job done executing it (Draft capital too!!) A first two 2nds two 3rds, a four, two 5's and two 7s!!

"interest intensifies!"

The thing is- while we talk like we know, and have great success a lot of the time with our 'collective' educated guesses- the guys that get paid to do this have made their plans, and I for one am really excited to see what becomes of it because they should know how to do it right - they have before (yes yes some mistakes as well!)

A ton of 17-10 13-7 type games or something altogether different ( 27-10, 33-20) ? Who knows!

And thats VERY interesting because I LOVE defense played at a high level. And love a running game that steals the defences will to resist ESPECIALLY late when they must and just CANT- I LOVE beating the pretty boys on offense and stifling their plans and hype and really would love to see that again - especially at home.

Old school sure - especially a Knox fan. Love a deep scoring play on offense as much as everyone, but defensive DOMINATION is what I really like.

I may be alone in this but I think we have a great shot to see it in the next 3 years and then for awhile after.

Or I could be totally wrong- hope not!

But its far more interesting this way than what appeared to be plan "A" !

Thankfully.

SEA!

Just to get it out of my head, let me toss a pipe dream out into the world. Jedrick Willis is 25. He's been the starting LT for Cleveland pretty much since was drafted in '20. He's played almost that whole time injured and out of position (he was RT at Alabama). And, y'know...Cleveland. Because the Hawks have some cash to play with, what if JS proposed to Willis that he sign a contract to come in for '25 as a back-up we hoped never to use, behind Lucas, explicitly giving him a year to recover and the promise of playing his natural position. That first year could be (comparatively) low dollar UNLESS he had to play, in which case it could be incentivized. (It also gives him another NFL pension year, and maybe he's made enough money already, but that's still a thing.) Next year, when the decision to keep Lucas has to be made, our needs should be clearer, so the contract could pay him starter salary if both sides think the fit works, or have an easy out if the team or the player wish to look elsewhere. I don't have any idea if this is realistic, but last time I looked he was still on the market.

Hawkblogger had an interesting video the other day where he showed the ratings (PFF FWIW) 2023 pre-Kubiak and Co, and 2024 with Kubrick and Co. Same lineman. The improvement was significant. So regardless of FA or the draft, I think we should expect improvement regardless, just from the coaching and play-calling.

If memory serves, the average run-blocking grade went up almost 20% and pass-blocking went up about 5%. At a minimum, these guys can coach OL. I'm pretty sure we'd be happy with that kind of improvement, particularly when it matches the normal maturation process of young players. And there I am being an optimist again.

Might be unpopular, but I think if there is a highly regarded corner available then we should draft him at 18. Our defense is not far away from being pretty darn tasty!

Quite honestly La’au, we were mediocre last year. I see the moves so far as positive. I’m not expecting SB this year. It’s a process. Give it time to develop. We’ve got $, picks and time on our side at the moment, so IMO it’s looking up. My gut is telling me we’re building for a real shot AFTER this season. But who knows what could still happen this season. 🤞

Looking at the two deep really highlights how thin the hawks are at corner. Would like to see them go OL(Booker/Simmons)+WR (Higgins/Bech)+CB (Porter/Thomas) with three of their first 5 picks

While I appreciate the article I'm more of a skeptic. I do not see our defense in the top 10 without a premier pass rusher. Our defense needs two or three more pieces to be elite. 1. Elite rusher, 2. Improved depth on all three levels, 3. Elite free safety.

I am of the opinion that we need more blue-chip players on this team. We have the depth now we need the difference makers. If we can get two more on defense we are elite

I'm not sure which stat(s) you prefer to rank defenses by. But, to me, points allowed is really the biggest one, because it is most directly tied to wins. Giving up fewer yards and creating TOs both directly affect scoring, so they are baked in already. Luck plays a part, too.

Ranked by points allowed in 2024, Seattle was 12th best. They were 1 TD from being 9th. So, they were practically Top-10 last year. They gave up 368 points. 9th place was 361. They really don't need any of those things on your list to be Top-10. Now, would they help? Absolutely! If we had any of those, then we're talking Top-5 defense, or better.

In case you're wondering, Top-5 was a 34 point improvement (5 TDs better over 17 games)

I believe in accepting what is, and spending as little time as possible fighting with reality. So, I am fine with the changes so far. I hope the OL can get significant improvement, however that is done, and then I will not worry too much about losing Geno and DK. Sam needs help to be his best. I'm looking forward with high anticipation. The D should be reliably entertaining.

SSJ when you say they’re done till the draft, you don’t think they’ll go for Jenkins or Becton or Bradbury till afterwards?

zezinhom400's avatar

In 2015 Seattle was 4th and in 2005 they were 2nd, and interestingly in both years they were 3rd in rushing yards. That’s the exciting part seeing Kubiak come in — maybe we can be Top 3 in rushing again, which could translate to at least being a top 10 offense .

But, that’s why I’m one of the teeth-gnashers about this offseason. The biggest change I was hoping for was significant change on the interior OL and I fear that all the rest is window-dressing and till we address the line.

But maybe we get Jenkins (or Becton), and maybe there’s a stud lineman sitting there at 18. Or maybe Schneider has a particular lineman he’s going to trade up for (or Tyler Warren who’s almost the same thing bc of his blocking skills and how disruptive he’ll be). Then, I’d become a lot more optimistic, could lean into these other changes.

But it’s still about the OL to me.

Yeah it does spring eternal, hope is a great thing - I have huge doses of it every September. Is much better than resignation.

Jenkins is coming in on Monday, here’s to hoping.

By this morning Becton's signed elsewhere. I keep hearing that the best policy with OL is to grow your own. (Vegetables, too.) I'm going to place my faith in the new coaching staff, who seem up to the job based on past history, and on the draft. I know JS has a sketchy record here, but I also suspect he's getting input from his new OC/staff that may ameliorate that deficiency. Hope springs eternal.

I'm not so sure JS has a sketchy record. He was part of one, for sure. But, the jury is still out on his 1st draft class without Pete's gatekeeping.

What’s so interesting and frankly great, that QB list. Talk about stability at the most important position. 70s and 80s there were 2. Now last 2 decades only 3, now 4. That stability allows for changes that make sense. The 90s were atrocious, although I really liked Kitna. Anyone of us that lived the post Krieg years know the pains. I do hope Darnold continues the run.

“Maybe it will be a spectacular flop. And that too would be interesting.”

This is in the eye of the beholder. I’ll be 70 when Week 1 kicks off. To me “interesting flop” equals a year of no progress that I don’t have time for (or, worse, setback).

Read Hawks looking at returners (Titan one that they talked to) since Kenny is the lone returner. My thinking S if one of the two elites there. Possibly Edge but with DLaw signing I think it gives flexibility, unless can’t work out Ucheena. One thing about that look, look at the depth and DLine/edge flexibility. JReed Murphy and Big Cat can play all 3 and you’ve got “rest” players to come in. That Edge group with Knight/Spoon speed is great (Mafe drops and Spoon rushes). And I do believe Coby going to be awesome this new season. Love is doing lovely things.

They messed around with Nehemiah Pritchett at returner last year a bit, as he was prolific in college at Auburn. Also, Dareke has been out there with little pop. So there are current options

John even admitted this class was unusually strong at RB and *gasp* what would our fan base do if we drafted ANOTHER one? I say this within the PR discussion because maybe we don’t target a PR, maybe we target another RB and they like KMAC as our PR.

Agreed. But they didn’t play Young there last year. Sort of surprised by that. My guess is he’s not cutting it in practice. And agreed I thought that was likely why Prichtte was drafted. But they need 2 back there and my guess is they want Kenny Mac only as fill in since he’s first after K9 and Charbo. Too bad there isn’t any Leon Washington’s anymore. :-)

Yeah, using KMac back there does worry me a bit with our only having 3 RB. Of course, I don't remember if we still have any on the practice squad.

In regard to the first sentence in the last paragraph, alluding to Seattle possibly being done with free agents prior to the draft. I am of the belief that, if Bradbury (Vikings center) has been released then Seattle will pursue a free agent signing with him and, I also believe that Seattle will offer Tevin Jenkins (upon passing a physical) will also be offered/ signed an offer.

Now this particular member of the 12s, who would like to see 2 out of the first 5 draft picks be of OL, would rather see DL Kenneth Grant out of Michigan selected at number 18, if he is there. He may be our version of Lalen Carter.
