And just signed Jones to 3 years $33 mil. A very busy weekend.

I was hoping for a quick turn around on the Dk trade news, because that would have meant someone out there was willing to match JS's demands. I think we ought to turn down anything less than a 2026 2nd rounder and let the offseason play out. His value may be dropping right now, but some team is going to think they're one DK away from super bowl contention between now and the trade deadline and be more willing to make a deal. Like Kenneth says, there's no hurry at this point. I think DK is making too much money next year on his current deal to do anything more than bluff about a hold out. I'd call that bluff and tell him we'll see ya at training camp.

Jarran Reed is a solid DL, so resigning at $8-10M is a good deal. With that said, both Reed and Williams are aged 30+. If Kevin Grant DL out of Michigan is available then (forgive my temporary lunacy) but draft him at nos.18. I know we desperately need iOL, but draft at nos.50 overall. and free agency can help out.

What’s all the buzz about Hendon Hooker?

Dominant in the SEC in college, but needed to catch up to NFL reading of defenses and throwing into tighter windows. I liked him a lot coming out. Same for Joe Milton in NE. Maybe I'm a subconscious Tennessee fan?

Big and strong and had a great final game of year…

I expect when we see the structure of JReed’s contract, we’ll see a light 2025 cap hit, and little guaranteed after 2026.

These more recent contract updates have made me realize I've completely lost track of what reasonable contracts are for each position.

What even is average for a starting DT at this point?

What is reasonable?

At what point is being able to disrupt the opponents game plan no longer worth disrupting the teams budget?

I just checked spotrac (you can look at every contract sorted by almost anything you want)

Reeds annual Average without looking at guarantees at 8,33m is tied for 29th for a DT

Yes, it feels crazy to me. It feels actually that teams are mortgaging the future on a series of bets. If they all hit, you get the Eagles or Chiefs. If not, you get the Saints.

Signing Reed is good news. Signing Jones will be better news.

Yes get Hendrickson if possible Seahawks are hoping for a lot for DK. I hope they get something good for him. He is pretty unique with his size and speed. Imagine him in KC with Mahomesairing it out to him? Perhaps coach Reed could help unlock his maximum potential. I’ve often wondered why we never considered putting DK as a tied End. I think he could be special as a tied end.

KC and the LA Chargers, to name two teams that are already good, can both make a case that DK would let them go to the next level, which is why he may command a #2.

Re. Hendrickson - was he at his peak last season? Will it be downhill from here? And he’s aging.

Not sure I’d want to spend that much money on him and I don’t think he’ll come cheap.

I wanted Reed back but this seems a crazy contract. Are there easy outs after the 1st year? He has played well but I am baffled by the amount of years and money.

Randall Murray's avatar

Actually compared to where he is rating wise and DL contracts, it is a good one. $8 mil a year.

AggieHawk's avatar

I feel like this too but the year over year increase in the cap distorts my sense of what is reasonable. I guess anything around $8 million is middle class money for a DT these days and I would say Reed is definitely a middle class type player at this stage.

I wonder whether also having two younger stars there, Murphy and Leo, and none of the three really best as a clogging NT, makes this a luxury pay. They’ll still need to sign a run stuffer. And clearly want another edge.

Hey, the exact contract terms are not yet known I think but it says "up to 25m" so there will be incentives and non guaranteed money. Last contract he had a little less than half of the contract as guarantee. We'll see but with the cap rising I think Reed is a reasonable signing which can still be called team friendly when all terms are known.

Yes they did. Next Darnold or Rodgers? I say Darnold and I wouldn’t mind even Justin Fields and draft milrose.

E. None of the Above

If any, I would hope for the best contract to get us a game manager who can protect the ball while we run it and bruise folks on D. Of them all, Darnold is the one I would be OK with, provided his contract is good. I don't see JS overpaying anyone out of desperation or leverage

Can’t see him getting a 2nd either, frankly there are no precedents for that esp knowing whoever pays that dearly also needs to get him under a contract he’ll accept. I’m hoping for a 3rd but that’s all we could get for Geno from a QB-desperate team. More likely a 4th, which is sadly looking good compared to recent other trades

Well thank God we got a second and perhaps something more hard for me tell complete deal. Did we get a sixth too? I thought I read that somewhere.

Also a "Pick swap in the 6th and 7th" according to NFL.com... idk if that means we gave our 6th and 7th for their 6th and 7th or if we traded a 6th or 7th for a 6th or 7th of theirs.

A dominant edge that requires shading or out-and-out double teaming is so valuable bc of what he opens up for the rest of the DL, beyond his own sack totals. And if he also can hold the edge, he’s extremely valuable

Not to mention the easier job in the secondary if a QB hears footsteps.

.Which is why that position gets paid, just like LT’s and WR1’s.

We keep talking about getting blue chip players but then we get “financially reasonable” and sit over here on the sidelines, wishing.

Go get this guy.

I clicked “no” then thought the better of it. They should make a play for Hendrickson.

Shaymus McFamous's avatar

I clicked no, as well, and I agree they should make a play for him, but a 2nd, 5th, and huge contract is a little much for a guy his age. I'd like to see SSJ do a break down of 3rd contracts for edge rushers.... I stand by my "no" at that price.

Danno's avatar

I love the JReed signing. I was expecting 2 years, but maybe the third year is an easy out. You say this lessens the need for help at the IDL position, which I agree, but I think to fully unlock the effectiveness of Byron Murphy, it would be nice to pick up a true NT to get him more time at the 3T position where he might become a real pass rushing threat.

Needed signing is solid. Now we need to sign two strong guards and draft another o lineman with positional flexibility. I hope our right tackle is healthy and available all season in which case we need two strong o lineman fairest and perhaps a center. Go hawks oh and sign Darnold or Justin Field and draft milrose!

Yes, but don’t forget a WR. We lost DK and Lockett. QB and WR went from average need to big need this week. We should be able to get one of each in free agency and the draft.
