JSN is an incredibly talented receiver and we’re lucky to have him as a Hawk, but he’s so quiet it’s easy to forget how good he is. No ADB persona or Metcalf drama, just quietly efficient. I love it, but sometimes miss the flamboyant personalities since football is sport plus entertainment. I’ll never forget DK and Pete ripping off their shirts to compare physiques, something I can’t imagine MM and JSN doing. I won’t say I miss DKs personal fouls, but a little passion, a la Lou Pinella, is appreciated and appropriate now and then.
Having said that, JSN is young, amazingly talented and worth every penny of whatever massive contract is coming his way in the near future.
Yeah, Doug wouldn't make many people's list, but he was most certainly elite in his ability to get separation without having elite speed. Ran the wheel route better than anyone I can think of.
I'll admit to wavering this way and then the other way on DK Metcalf's value to this team. I've advocated for trading him a long time ago. Then I thought he was worth his salary for the yards and TD's he got, and attention he took away from the other receivers. I thought he would get even more than we got for him based upon his reputation, which never seemed to take into account his immaturity. Pete defended DK on the basis of his passion for the game. Interestingly, Aaron Rodgers also defended DK because he works at his craft and wants to get better.
But JSN transcends the talents of DK. He is great at every aspect of the position. During the year DK was drafted, he fell in the draft for the fact that his 3 Cone and Shuttle times were atrocious. 31 other teams didn't draft DK because of those data points. So when you realize that, as SSJ pointed out, JSN's 3 Cone and Shuttle were almost records. Very elite numbers for any position.
Which is why I am not, and most of you are not surprised at all by JSN's production so far. Nor am I surprised that a healthy Cooper Kupp is still a valuable receiver. Very valuable. I rejoice that we have an all hands team. Every TE, WR, and RB on our team have excellent hands. From the first to the last WR, they all have great hands. Drops are gone with DK. And no MVS.
Oh, I'd like to add that I think Dereke Young has EARNED more targets. He has shown an ability to come down with contested catches such that he can be trusted to target him even when he is still covered. He has shown the ability to bully defenders and snatch the ball out of the air and come down with it. That is a highly valuable trait we hoped we had gotten with DK, but we didn't get that from DK at all. Dereke has really grown in both abilities and size it seems to me. He has added muscle as well, and we need a bully on the field.
Hard to say. I recall DK had lauded his work ethic and precise routes. He seems to have good hands and is a good blocker. Maybe has difficulty with separation?
That's actually a great point. If JSN was in this system with this QB from game 1, you'd sort of think his numbers would be better......maybe much better.
First 39 games? Couldn't you have put this off for one more week and crunched the numbers for the first 40 games? I only like numbers that end in 5 or 0, for these purposes, thank you very much!
Let's check back in at 50. No, wait, 51 equals 3 full seasons. Ahhhh... my brain hurts.
The game is very different today. I, for some reason am reminded of something Terry Bradshaw said a couple of years ago when talking about, I think, Patric Mahomes. " I threw for 1800 hundred yards in a year and made the Pro bowl, this guy threw that in a month."
In 1978 Terry won the MVP. He had 2900 yards 30 touchdowns and 20 picks,20!
Today you probably get benched for that unless your name is Jamis Winston.
Bradshaw was very sensitive about great QB play, when he began broadcasting games. Especially Joe Montana's games. It got awkward after a while. Made me laugh as his fellow broadcasters would be lauding Joe after something amazing happened and Terry would break into what HE did when HE played. It is good they let Terry be Terry, as it became a cute point as time went on. Even today we can see the guys defer to him, often times reluctantly.
Wins is what got Terry Bradshaw his awards, not his arm. But the game is different today as you said. Marino would fit into the modern NFL, but I sort of doubt Bradshaw would even make a team.
Was gonna say, maybe the toughest QB I've ever seen. That guy would get ROCKED by shots that would be ejections today, and would just pick himself up and go back to the huddle
"QB-favorable rules", case-in-point: the hit on him after that throw would've been flagged for 15yds and maybe even an ejection with today's rules... Forceable contact to the head over a step late with the forearm.
It is difficult, as you say, to compare someone playing today with someone playing in a different era. The game of football is very different from 15 years ago, and even more different from 40 years ago. I saw “The Athletic” podcast today where they talk about what makes an elite receiver today. They use Puca, St. Brown, and JSN as examples. They talk about the ability to run any route, to create separation in man coverage, to find openings in the zone. They were high on JS, saying even when they shade a safety over the top, he is still catching at a very high rate when targeted.
When you look at his age, it’s hard to believe he could be up for an extension in less than a year. If he stays healthy the rest of the year, his numbers are going to be very costly.
Watching Jax Dart and Cam Skattebo (et al) take the Eagles to the woodshed last night makes me think we may be seeing the rise of a new intensity in American Football. Most fun I have had in some time. Attitude Matters!
Yeah. This one had an energy I haven't seen in a while. Skattebo wouldn't be denied his first downs and he ain't a big bruiser. But he ran like one. Caught like the Best and proceeded to make his tackler regret the effort. Dart ran, I mean RAN to the tent to get cleared on concussions. Knocked silly, it didn't last. He came back more dangerous. Fans were going nuts. Coach Daboll got booted from the tent, arguing with the Doc. The two rookies were inseparable following the Win. And there was Russ, searching for a camera angle... Fitz and Whit and Sherm knew they witnessed something great starting. Even heard bad language used.
The other thing about him is he seems to stay healthy. Could just be my imagination but I'm not recalling him being out for very many games, and I also don't recall him being frequently on the "questionable" list. Is this perception accurate?
JSN receiving passes from JKS in the future? Read that JKS’s favorite team growing up was the Seahawks.

Off the sport 'n subject, ~ ... but the Mariners, WhooHoo !
Yes, go Mariners!
JSN is elite. Sam is playing that way as well. We haven't had two truly elite players on offense for a minute.
Mr. Unlimited before he became limited + Angry Doug + No-E + Beast Mode would be the last collection I recall.
And of course are part of the All-Nickname team
Editorial comment: Baldwin rarely makes anyone's lists but that guy had ELITE separation skills and ELITE hands/body control
Yeah, Doug wouldn't make many people's list, but he was most certainly elite in his ability to get separation without having elite speed. Ran the wheel route better than anyone I can think of.
I’ve been excited to watch JSN ever since we had the deep dives here. And he has not disappointed even a TINY bit.
Just found his game logs. Has played in every game since being drafted. Availability just adds to his mystique.
I'll admit to wavering this way and then the other way on DK Metcalf's value to this team. I've advocated for trading him a long time ago. Hallelujah, Hallelujah!
I recall DK slid in the draft due to a serious neck injury he had as a sophomore.
Yea, that was a smaller part of it, but that added to his fall.

It would be great to have a big, fast and bully of a receiver on the outside. Good for end zone work as well.
I agree, but it's gonna be hard to popularize the catch phrase "less Bobo."
For those into numerology, Dareke's jersey #83's digits add up to 11 JSN's number. Coincidence or the universe speaking partnership to us?
Maybe we should start a positive Dareke Young phrase instead of a negative Bobo one?
Seek Dareke
Forever Young
Do It Young (DIY)
Mo DaYo
If he gets more time instead of Kupp, they could be the Young Guns
EeeeK!
Perfect for halloween!!
Jake has been underused. Dunno why.
Hard to say. I recall DK had lauded his work ethic and precise routes. He seems to have good hands and is a good blocker. Maybe has difficulty with separation?
Slower than most tight ends so NFL corners close any gaps he creates very quickly.
No doubt. But he wins the contested catch contests. Maybe they key on him?
He may have had a teammate who was holding him back but he definitely had an offensive coordinator who was.
Damn you Shane Waldron!
Yep, the 3 yard screen and a cloud of dust.
That's actually a great point. If JSN was in this system with this QB from game 1, you'd sort of think his numbers would be better......maybe much better.

Grant that’s why we have SJ, so you don’t need to crunch the numbers and hurt your noggin. Just read and appreciate :-)))
LoL

I’ve never seen anyone with pocket presence like Bradshaw. Put him in today’s game with its QB-favorable rules and he’d be one of the best.

Was gonna say, maybe the toughest QB I've ever seen. That guy would get ROCKED by shots that would be ejections today, and would just pick himself up and go back to the huddle
No little blue tents to take a breather
Terry grew roots standing in the pocket!
"QB-favorable rules", case-in-point: the hit on him after that throw would've been flagged for 15yds and maybe even an ejection with today's rules... Forceable contact to the head over a step late with the forearm.
Back then, that was a day at the office!
OK, I will concede.
Jamis Winston, or Geno Smith ;)

That's the kind of problem we want.

Loved the Eagles losing. It’s really hard to write off any team on any given Sunday (or Monday in this case)
The Eagles looked downright disinterested.
Or Thursday.
Yeah. This one had an energy I haven't seen in a while. Skattebo wouldn't be denied his first downs and he ain't a big bruiser. But he ran like one. Russ looking for a camera angle hahahahaha I thought I was the only one noticing that
Yeah! He still hasn't mastered not looking like he's looking. It's like waiting for eye contact at the post office.
Skattebo is so much fun to watch. He reminds a little of John Riggins.
Boy Howdy. I'll take the Moment, as nobody knew who he is and will certainly be paying attention in their next game. Loved the Energy. Loved it.
The other thing about him is he seems to stay healthy. Could just be my imagination but I'm not recalling him being out for very many games, and I also don't recall him being frequently on the "questionable" list. Is this perception accurate?
He missed his very first game of his rookie season, if my memory serves me right, and he missed a large chunk of his final season at Ohio State.
