JSN can set franchise record this week
Film Breakdowns: Zach Charbonnet, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Sataoa Laumea, Byron Murphy, Michael Dickson, and more
If Jaxon Smith-Njigba gets 70 receiving yards against the Packers, he will be the first player in Seahawks history to do so in six straight games per Next Gen Stats:
Jaxon Smith-Njigba led the Seahawks with 82 receiving yards and a TD in Week 14. It marked his 5th consecutive game with 70+ receiving yards, which is tied for the longest streak in team history (DK Metcalf in 2020 and Steve Largent in 1985).
In the game prior to the start of the streak, JSN had sixty-nine yards. So if we aren’t being super nitpicky, he’s kind of already done it. Prior to this streak, JSN had ONE career game with over 70 yards.
I did some additional research and there are only 13 players in the NFL with active streaks of 2+ games, so JSN’s streak is fairly exceptional already; The only receiver who has a longer active streak right now is Denver’s Courtland Sutton, as he’s had 70+ yards in his last six games. Unfortunately, it’s going to be a long wait for JSN to break the all-time record: 21 games by Antonio Brown from 2013-2015.
Zach Charbonnet or Kenneth Walker?
Another number from NGS, Charbonnet’s +41 rushing yards over expectation is the highest single-game total by a Seahawks running back in either 2023 or 2024.
The poll posted on Tuesday drew a fitting 50/50 split:
I don’t know how realistic it is to expect Seattle to find a true 50/50 split here, but the Lions have managed to do it with near perfection:
Jahmyr Gibbs has 178 carries and 34 catches for 1,016 rushing yards and 312 receiving yards
David Montgomery has 180 carries and 32 catches for 771 rushing yards and 310 receiving yards
The duo has combined for 24 touchdowns with 4 games left in the season. We know they have the running backs but do the Seahawks have the personnel to block/coach for a rushing attack like Detroit’s?
Video killed the newsletter star
There’s little I need to write between now and the end of the newsletter because the Seahawks were a VERY POPULAR TEAM on YouTube this week. These 10 videos will help you understand Seattle’s win over the Cardinals better than I can.
O-Line Committee: Sataoa Laumea watch
Though the O-line Committee notes the slowness of Laken Tomlinson, “He’s in first gear and he’s having a hard time getting into second”, Sataoa Laumea really stood out multiple times on the film for them.
Jeremiah Sirles also points out that Abe Lucas is “such a natural pass protector” and that Julian Love is having an “All-Pro type year” at safety.
All-22 Films Marathon
We met All-22 last year when he made one video about the Seahawks, I shared it here, and then the more love his Seattle videos get, the more content he creates about the team. Keep clicking, liking, and commenting on these videos because All-22 knows what he’s talking about…
We got FOUR videos about the Seahawks this week and it’s not even Thursday.
This latest one on JSN just dropped this morning.
If you’ve watched these already, share your thoughts in the comments:
The Coach Plays: Charbonnet
More Charbonnet.
The Football Scout: Byron Murphy
Byron Murphy doesn’t have gaudy stats, so he won’t get any votes for Defensive Rookie of the Year, but the Seahawks have nothing to regret about the pick so far. The stats will likely follow shortly.
Isaac Punts: Michael Dickson’s “MVP” game
Something that Michael Dickson would like to avoid:
His 12.7% of punts going for touchbacks is a career-high
Now imagine that being true and Dickson is STILL having the best season of his career. Dickson’s 4 punts inside the 20 (on 5 attempts) is a season-high and the fifth one was mere inches from also going out of bounds inside the 5.
Are we sure that “Jay Harbaugh’s gotta go”? Because fixing Dickson and getting Jason Myers straight were far higher priorities going into the season than making sure two players essentially picked off the street didn’t fumble the ball.
The Legion of 12s: LINEBACKERS
The (TRUNCATED) linebacker timeline:
February: “Re-sign Jordyn Brooks and Bobby Wagner?”
March: Seahawks sign Jerome Baker and Tyrel Dodson
Today: Seahawks seem to be set for years with Ernest Jones and Tyrice Knight
In the words of Tommy Wiseau: “Don’t plan too much, it may not come out right.”
BigR: Ryan Grubb
It feels like it’s been years since it was universally accepted that “the Seahawks should fire Ryan Grubb at the end of the season no matter what”. In reality, it’s been… about 96 hours?
Maybe the coaches are not out of the woods yet — these last four games will say as much as the first 13 did — but that’s why it’s always better to examine the full body of work instead of just a stretch or a partial season. Sometimes it’s NOT best to wait, but Seattle’s first-time NFL coordinators are deserving of slack and they can prove what they’ve learned so far this Sunday night against the Packers.
(Final note: Are we not on a beeline for Seahawks-Rams to be the final game of the NFL regular season on SNF?)
Seaside Joe 2111
I’d love to see the 11-5 Seahawks play the 10-6 Rams for the NFCWest title on SNF. But I’d like it more if I knew 11-6 would get the Hawks into the playoffs. McKay still makes me nervous.
Yeah man it def feels that way, Hawks Rams SNF
