Leonard Williams trade: 7 reasons the Seahawks made deal with Giants
Immediate trade grades ignore important fact: Giants are bad
I don’t have a problem with people who have said that the New York Giants got a good deal by trading Leonard Williams for two draft picks, the far more meaningful one being a 2024 second rounder, I really don’t. Based on where the Giants are today, the trade has been called a “no-brainer”, a description that adequately reflects how easy the move would have been for any GM.
It’s like the mid-tier trade version of when former Colts GM Ryan Grigson picked Andrew Luck with the first overall pick. Grigson won Executive of the Year for it, only a few years before being fired by Indianapolis because he couldn’t do anything that was a “some-brainer”.
No, what I find interesting and take issue with is the notion that the Giants have “reverse-Russell Wilson’d” the Seahawks in this trade, getting back a second round pick for a “10-game rental”. SI gave the Giants a B+ for the trade, CBS gave them an A, and USA Today went with an A+ en route to quipping that pretty soon we’re going to need to start (prepare yourself for the most overused term by millenials stealing phrases from Gen Z) “giving GM Joe Schoen his appropriate flowers.”
Rule of thumb that I like to live by: If a phrase was invented after you turned 25, it’s not your phrase to use. That advice is on the house, Brandon Marshall.
But again, I don’t have a problem with people applauding the move by the Giants on Monday because it does seem as though both teams got what they wanted to get out of the 2023 trade deadline. The Seahawks got better right now, the Giants got…worse. That’s how I would describe New York’s 10-year plan…”We gotta get worse, Mr. Mara!”
However, there is still something missing from everyone else’s take besides Seaside Joe’s when addressing why the trade could ultimately end up favoring Seattle…
The overlooked or ignored piece of information in every article, tweet, podcast, and sky-writing take on the Leonard Williams trade that I do think should be included is….DID WE FORGET THAT THE NEW YORK GIANTS ARE…
STUPID?
That’s only part of why I’d give more credit to Seattle for this trade than they’re currently getting, but I have at least 7 other reasons to believe that the Seahawks are not going to regret Monday’s deal. Keep reading to find out what they are:
