If stats mean anything at all, He is playing very well against the run. Adding another rotational inside guy that plays the run very well is a big plus- I can see Dre maybe moving to a regular DE on early downs which might end up being a big plus. Pete stated that he has been liking/wanting to have him on his team for a while now. Must be good reasons for him to say that. J Reed has been playing GREAT, but this might afford him to not only stay healthy but, YEA be fresher throughout the whole game.

Here’s the thing: if during the off-season Schneider had landed Williams instead of Jones or especially Reed, wouldn’t we have been high-fiving all the way to the bank?

We would have.

Let’s say we lose him to free agency. So we lose a 2024 2nd rd pick (am not worried about the 2025 pick bc I fear the 2024 draft is pretty shallow, by the time you get to 24-26 you prob have Schneider trading down). The comp pick and whatever else we get for giving up 24-26 is prob a push (if the 24 draft is shallow). Maybe Schneider thinks it is, so his loss of a 24 2nd rder isn’t as dramatic as we may think

I'm excited for this get, I just don't know much about him, other than he was good on the Jets and good for a year with the Giants. Hopefully we see a write up on him soon, I trust what's here a lot more than what else is out there.

This is fun! This is the golden age of Seahawks with Pete and John. What a fun time it is to be a fan. The reactions I've been watching on YouTube from national commentors are really impressed with this move. This shows moxie. It's a bold move that reinforces the DL. Exactly the type of move that was implored upon since training camp. People stress about the loss of draft capital. There is no guarantee of success with those picks. If you can get a proven player then the loss of the picks may very well be worth it. If we would have lost the game yesterday, then the tenor of the conversation at a 4-3 record may be totally different. But, at 5-2 this move is exciting. As fans we can't control one thing about the team. We can control our reactions to it. For those that are having such a tough time with Pete, John, and Geno, it can be a lot worse. When the time comes for Pete and John to step away, you'll get what you wish for but it may not be what you want. Just look at the teams from NYC. One of them has the reigning coach of the year. Yeah. Futility is so abundant for a solid two dozen teams. I just want to enjoy what we got going on. It's neat to be in the position to make a meaningful trade like this.

If the national media thinks it's a great move, in my mind that's another indication that it stinks.

I also wonder if this is somewhat telling that Mone is not likely back this season (late season injury requiring a year) and the fact that like yesterday Jones and Reed had a lot of playing time, something the defensive bigs can’t do as well. If Young was a stud and Morris available maybe deal doesn’t get done but as you noted either he’s most definitely worth a 2 if resigned or a cheap high quality depth with a loss of only about 40 spots in 2024, sure seems like a win

This tells me that Pete/John believe we are an NFC champion contender this season. You, me, and the rest of the world may agree or disagree, but they aren't just talking the talk. They are committing future capital (of debatable value) to get better now and for the remainder of the season. I have never thought that Pete/John seem naive, or unrealistic in their expectations. They may say what they need to say to motivate players and excite fans but, from my perspective, they have rarely made moves that reflect unrealistic expectations for success. When I look at the current standings and our competition to win the NFC, I think we've got a reasonable chance and I view this trade as a potential win for both sides. I do think that it's a no-lose trade scenario for the the Giants, so good for them.

I think it's more a tell that Pete doesn't plan to coach much longer.

Tl;dr I see it as a move with low risk, and a chance for high reward

I think I like the move. I don't think it is a huge difference maker, yet, but if it makes our DLine a little more fresh in the 4th qtr of the playoff game (🤞), then it was worth it. John has shown the past two years that he has learned from his mistakes and used that to fuel the new holistic plan he spoke about before the draft. He has had successful picks in every round, in and amongst some guys that haven't panned out just yet. This move gives salary that we would pay someone next year that may, or may not, pan out to a guy that we know is at the very least already a good player who will add needed depth; and at the most, a guy who could rebound to his former success he had in a different system to the point that he wants to resign. On top, we still have picks and a GM who has gotten better at using them, directly or indirectly. He wouldn't have handcuffed us even if he had traded a 2nd rd for him, straight up. Still plenty of tools in the belt, and he has shown me he is one of the best GMs in the league. Let's go!

Financial Rating: A+, Good work to get the Giants to pay it all, beneficial for this year and doesn't hamper us anything if it flops.

Picks Rating: B, The 2025 pick is good. Doesn't hurt us at all, and as pointed out if we earna comp pick we actually come out ahead! Personally I liked the 2nd Rd'r because that's where I was eyeing up good QB value. However with two 3rds (thanks Denver) and a 1st Rd that could well offer good trade down opportunity there is easily enough in the tank to manouver closer to the draft itself and land the needed pieces (still want a young long term IDL/NT and a QB).

Overall: A-, I don't think it was a needed move but it doesn't hurt the team in any sense. My only marginal concern is that PC/JS genuinely think this is a contender team whilst I remain unconvinced we can really beat the best of the NFL, and therefore revert to the 2016-2021 era of draft and squad build. Remains to be seen, but it's still a good trade i think and struggle to really see how it could turn sour.

It seems like everyone is excited or a little emotional about this trade today. Personally I don’t feel much about it at all. It may work out, or it may not - the same as any trade like this. Great if it does, no big deal if it doesn’t, our D seems to be getting better by the week anyway. I see the cost is no great hit given this type of thing is always a bit of a gamble and the way PC/JS trade their draft picks up or down at the best of times. I feel kind of used to it and life goes on. So, basically, I thinks it’s a ....muh 🤷‍♂️

Perhaps we are a bit emotional. I mean, obviously I am. Just really glad Pete and John aren't running my investment portfolio. This move feels to me like buying crypto or tulip bulbs or maybe magic beans. Fortunes have been made and lost on all sorts of things but I won't go in on anything unless I feel confidence that I understand the basics and that it's likely to turn out well.

Yeah, Dale. I mean, it's pretty big news, teams don't make trades very often. On the other hand, it could be a move that doesn't move the needle very much in either direction.

I don’t mean to take away the news aspect of it. These types of trades are alway good for news and bread and butter for you. And I appreciate the effort you put in to reporting such things to us. That’s why we’re all here. I guess I’m just in a ‘whatever’ mood today. Hopefully he goes well and excites me later.

So, who gets cut to make room on the 53?

Clark is the likely candidate, unless someone else from the DL gets traded (Taylor??).

HOOOOLLLLLYYY!!!!

This is a huge move that says "we have the NFC West and more in our sights".

IT!

I didn't think the Seahawks would make this kind of move, but the D would have to be jacked about it,.

One thing I'm wondering is whose snaps he will take? According to pro football reference J-Reed and Jones have both been on the field for 65% of snaps, with Mario Edwards at 39%, and Myles Adams/Cameron Young combining for 33%. We know that the "base" defense will include 2 of Frank Clark / Boye Mafe / Derick Hall / D-Taylor, so does Leonard Williams take some of Jones/Edwards snaps or spell Reed to keep both of them fresh?

I'm thinking it's back to 2013 again when there were Red Bryant, Chris Clemons, Tony McDaniel, Brandon Mebane, Michael Bennett and Benson Mayowa. Granted, that was a 4/3 front seven but Seattle came at you in waves non-stop all the time. And if a Reed or a Jones goes down, who's there to plug those formidable gaps? Williams adds strength to what's becoming a strength -- and with Wagz and Brooks free to fly around and react, life is much easier for our very strong DB's. Kinda like it actually.

There's the scenario in which everyone plays a little less. Then there's the scenario in which Seattle assumes at some point they will lose a DL to injury for a game or more. At the time that everyone is healthy, give Jarran Reed more of a breather.

There will absolutely be injuries/illnesses over the remainder of the season. Need him as a plus starter & depth!

Veteran DT is mid season acquisition that makes sense because 1) he can play and make an impact immediately; if he plays well worth keeping around because DT with a few exceptions don't develop immediately. Seahawks run defense has done well but they are going to play the Ravens, the Eagles the Cowboys and the 49ers twice and those teams want to run the ball. Also they just got gashed on middle screens. Veteran DT sounds pretty good. Cost is because Giants are eating so much of the Cap hit.

Not a bad insurance policy to have if Reed gets dinged up. Wouldn't want to put the full load on Young and a couple of UDFA's off the practice squad. We have a bunch of players who can move around the defense, so we could cover up some other areas, but you can't cover up a d-tackle with anything less than another d-tackle.

He might not be 100% of what he once was, but he's still more than solid. If he takes to the culture in the Seahawks locker room, we might see a really good player. If he's pissed about getting traded, he may be just a forgettable transaction some years from now. I'm hoping for the former, but the latter is a possibility.

Expand full comment

I'll bet on the latter... the Gints (spray paint end zone Snickers commercial reference) have been bad since Eli retired, and maybe before. Playing for a winning (right now) team that wants to use you so much they traded for you, has got be a good vibe. I can't see him being pissed. We got a big litter box, if he is, though. He'll be fine and land on his feet. He still has at least 2-3 lives left, right? Anymore Big Cat clichés y'all wanna add?

He is a purrfect fit for the post we want to climb. He will be Lion in wait for Purdy when we square up vs the Niners, As for me--ow this is a great addition!

Yep, and it will help to keep Reed "fresh"-ish for a playoff run too. This is a huge boost for the DL.

He’s played over 1000 snaps at 5-tech, so there a number of alignments possible with him. Pretty versatile big man.

As Condotta points out, Hawks have 8 picks in 2024, so it's hard to see how it's a bad trade - strengthening the D line like this, at this draft & $ cost, and this point in the season when bargains are harder to find. LW should be able to eat up a bunch of snaps, amping the value and durability of the already good line. A stronger D challenges our spotty offense to step it the hell up at least one notch, please God.
