Geno Smith is a good quarterback, I also believe he is not long for the Seahawks. Rob Stanton Rob, Stanton said that. The 12/13 millions of dollars that will soon be due Geno is sticking out there like a sore thumb. Geno Smith was Pete Carroll’s guy, not Schneiders, which seems to be common Knowledge by now. This caught my attention when watching a sports talk show When They started talking about a little bit of a dust up between Pete Carroll and John Schneider, when Carol named Geno Smith as the starter instead of Drew for the second season. Pete Carol was in charge then, he isn’t now, so we’ll Shall see. How it shakes out. What a way to make a living.
My favorite 5 words out of the press conference. 'We're going to have answers!'. I bet he said that in the interview with John, and JS whipped out the contract about 1.2 seconds later. Defensively, the Seahawks had no answers last year, particularly in the second half. That had to frustrate the crap out of John.
This might be old news or perhaps there's an obvious answer but given Pete Carroll's genuinely positive nature And his retention as a consultant I am wondering why he was completely absent from the introduction of McDonald to the VMAC
Yes agreed. I contrast that with how a POTUS leaving office customarily attends the inauguration of the successor. A reminder that NFL teams are not democracies even if the transfer of power is peaceful.
One interesting aspect from the QB discussion. Mac spent a week dissecting the Hawks and Geno's game to figure out weaknesses, tendencies, and the such. He was successful.
IF (if not that it will happen I don't know) ... IF he and JS goes with Geno he will be able to reverse coach everything that he saw on video from a defensive perspective. In that way, the hire could help Geno.
But, I think much of next year QBs decision will come down to where they (JS/Mac) think the team is at. If they believe they have a shot next year with the roster in place plus FA/Rooks, then they may lean Geno's way. If they think it'll take a couple years then maybe the give Lock a shot to see what he can do.
Either way, I think we will be looking for QBs in a similar way to 2010-2012 ... Under every rock and in every nook and cranny especially the draft and not waiting for a lottery pick.
I love SSJ's analytical, systimatic approach to things and very quickly tire of hypothetical situations and wild day daydreams. In otherwords, I don't read mock drafts very often and our search for a coaching staff is kind of like a mock draft. I look forward to what Joe has to say, but am not interested in what Ian Rapoport, Adam Schefler, or pretty much anybody else has to offer. The actual draft (late April) can't come soon enough.
If the focus is on QB play then Geno's a goner unless he renegotiates. Why pay Geno when we know what he is and that's not a QB who carries a team? Surely they'd much rather pay Lock a lot less to likely get the same play as Geno and draft a prospect.
Other than agreeing to drop his guarantee (which is essentially what the broncos asked russ to do which was never gonna happen), there's no real motivation to renegotiate. he doesn't make a high base salary as is, he's not going to make a $1 million base salary. He could assume that if he's released, he'll get the same money elsewhere, if not more guaranteed money. So I think this is just a keep or release situation.
I agree. I don't think re-negotiating is likely either. But I'm a little excited at the prospect of Drew lock Time after wanting him to start 2 years ago.
Very enjoyable Press Conference besides the as usually bad as possible audio. I think he is a very honest person. I loved Pete for his overly optimistic nature but I really believe Mike Mac could be what this team needs.
Dude, I've been streaming Vmac interviews for as long as they've been posting them on Seahawks.com, probably before we won the Super Bowl. For a long, long time I thought the audio was bush league and embarrassing and would be fixed "next year." I mean, they're owned by Microsoft for Chrissakes! But it never gets even a little bit better, year after year.
For years, Pat McAfee championed the "Bengals need an indoor practice facility" cause, and it FINALLY happened.
This is similar, except it's SO much easier and cheaper to do. It really does not represent the organization in a very professional light, and as a consistent point of contact for fans, it should. We're missing the freakin boat on this one. Attention to detail pertains to the little ones, too
I got the feeling that MM is open to having Geno as his QB, but he also sounded open to having Lock as the starter. I didn’t get a sense of urgency to trade up for a top QB with the plan to start the rookie on day 1. That said, I expect JSMM to draft a new backup QB to possibly grow into a starter. Just look down the road at Purdy to see how that can work out.
JS had that experience in 2010/11. Stick with a workable QB while building the rest of the team, then choose your next QB when the opportunity arises. That said, JS might have his eye on a later round gem in 2024.
The bottom line is that I expect Geno or Lock to be the starter next season, but only one will be on the team.
I agree it'll only be one of the two on the roster. I suspect John already decided what to do with Geno and told (not asked) MM as much before he agreed to the job.
Yeah, Cade McNamara was the QB for MICH but only because JJ was a freshman. They worked JJ into games as a change of pace but it was clear even then that JJ had "something special" that McNamara lacked--which is why McNamara exited through the portal. I am sure Macdonald knows all about JJ and has a former mentor (Harbaugh) in his ear telling him "he's better than Andrew Luck".
The Cade McNamara experiment with MICH was an unhappy one. Cade would look ok one game and not ok the next. He couldn't seem to ever get untracked... although he was clearly skilled. That is the thing--SO MANY great atheletes, so few opportunities to really shine, and the guys that do only make it to an opportunity at the next level in the NFL.
Is JJ actually good? Can he be a ++ starting QB in the NFL? After watching him pretty closely in his career I would say "probably" but you never know. The kid is incredibly athletic and processes the game well. Harbaugh (who should know since he coached Luck at Stanford) really REALLY likes him. Whatever the challenge was for JJ in a game, he seemed to always rise to it even if all of the volume stats don't indicate it.
Don't think my heart and head can handle another year of debating QBs who will almost certainly be playing for other teams. Which is not to say that McCarthy can't be going to the Seahawks, it's just math: most QBs will play for other teams. When the Seahawks situation clears up and we have a better idea of who they'd actually choose, if anyone, that'll be a better time for me to dig into the merits of A, B, and C options.
I have no opinion other than to say, I'm okay with taking a chance on anyone if John likes him.
Haha. Once we get through a few more steps into the process and gain clarity on the Seahawks after free agency, combine, etc., who knows what we can squeeze into the chamber in March and April.
Yes... it will get more exciting if the Seahawks DO part ways with Geno, and we will know that very shortly after SB before the new league year starts.
I had to rewind to make sure I heard JS say "Ravens and Lions" lose on Sunday. That was odd. I think he may have even said it again later. But that pretty much confirmed to me that it was always Ben Johnson and Mac were top candidates and very close calls. Which makes sense. I don't think Quinn or anyone else other than maybe Karka was nearly as high on their boards as those two.
The Ravens defense was that good when Seattle played them. And it wasn't just Seattle, we can ask Ben Johnson, and many others, what they thought.
Personally, I liked the hoodie with the jacket over it.
FWIW, Randy Mueller likes Penix and McCarthy, and sees both as potential top 10 picks depending on who else is in the draft. He views Penix as the more polished of the two but sees McCarthy as having a higher ceiling.

It’s kind of like how JS wasn’t at Pete’s “good bye” press conference. It would have been a distraction.
Yesterday was all about welcoming MM. Having Pete there would have been awkward for both MM and PC.
Yes agreed. I contrast that with how a POTUS leaving office customarily attends the inauguration of the successor. A reminder that NFL teams are not democracies even if the transfer of power is peaceful.
Perhaps he felt it was Mike's day and to be graceful he didn't want to take away from his well-deserved limelight
The Hawks are looking to poach Ben Johnson's sidekick.

Waitaminnit! Are you Mike MacDonald?!?
Like it.
This is where I go to hammer out the ideas you see on Sunday!
Like this too.

Clark (Seaside Joe & Jay's dog) approves of this message.

I thought it was interesting that even though Lock is a free agent he mentioned meeting with him

I should add that for all I know, every team deals with this, but I seriously doubt it.
They know, that this is an issue, right?
No idea

Yeah, I wasn't trying to imply that McCarthy had lost a competition or wasn't a nice prospect.

What?!! No 32 member QB Survival pool?!! :D.
I agree. If John likes the guy that is enough to roll with.
Haha. Once we get through a few more steps into the process and gain clarity on the Seahawks after free agency, combine, etc., who knows what we can squeeze into the chamber in March and April.

One player he called out he wanted in Baltimore but obviously didn't fall to them: Spoon.
Probably not surprising news to anyone.
