Fans of NFC West teams may have a slight case of “lastness syndrome” because for arbitrary reasons the division usually comes last when the media references the entire league: Look at any standings page and the NFC West comes bottom right corner, which leads to the assumption that the division is “at the end” because of American book-reading habits. And within that reasoning, no team is MORE LAST than the alphabetically challenged Seattle Seahawks.
But here’s my take on the “last” division: The NFC West could also come out of next season with the reputation as the BEST division in the NFL.
I watched Todd McShay’s 32-team post-draft recap and of course the NFC West was the last division they talked about, with the Seahawks as the “last, but certainly not least” team they talked about.
The feeling I have after recapping all 32 teams and all eight divisions is that the NFC West may be the only division that doesn’t have a weak spot.
This holds true when looking at the 2024 standings and the team in the bottom-right corner. The 49ers were the only last place team to win six games last season:
The NFC North had three teams that won more games than any team in the NFC West, and the Bears could be a lot better in 2025, (the AFC West is another strong division and the Raiders added Pete Carroll and Geno Smith to the mix as well), and I’m not saying that I know that the NFC West is the best division in football.
But it could be much closer to the best division than the consensus believes.
If the 49ers or the Cardinals are the worst team in the NFC West, I say that’s a much better “worst team” than any other division. Here are post-draft updates on the three NFC West rivals of the Seahawks:
