Without Mixon, the RB churn seems like a lot of sound and fury signifying very little. Maybe the best thing that Fleury can do is to give Shaheed more snaps in the backfield.
There’s going to be a great deal of clamor that Schneider should have signed K9. Whether or not Walker would have performed as well here as he is in KC, there’s not much question that Walker would be an asset simply because he doesn’t fumble, can get outside, and has breakaway speed and moves.
That being said, John Schneider is not going to give a three-year second contract to a running back. He is willing to take the risk of a short-term hit rather than that of a long-term albatross around the Seattle salary cap neck. We can ding him for not having an adequate Plan B—there were options besides relying on Price and Wilson—but there’s no point in getting worked up about something that was never going to happen.
AFC Offensive Player of the Month Ken Walker continues to look like this year’s best free-agent signing. In the Chief’s victory over the Raiders, K9 rushed for 177 yards on 22 carries, with two TDs and 76 yard breakaway in the bargain.
A few more games like Boye Mafe had on Sunday and he might turn out to be the second-best FA signing. Mafe recorded three TFLs, a sack, and a QB hit.
In Philadelphia, Riq Woolen struggled after an injury to Quinyon Mitchell moved him to the CB1 role. Woolen committed a DPI and had trouble covering Puka Nacua.
While Dareke Young committed a costly late=game TO against the Chiefs, fellow Raider Cody White caught two passes for 36 yards and helped make a 2-pt conversion in the Raiders’ loss to Kansas City.
I agree that we don't have RBs with shifty, make-you-miss speed and cuts right now. Especially with a healthy Charbs, they are a badass between-the-tackles unit (nowhere near MoneyLynch but it might become a classic Hawk room). And they all have upside in the pass game. Let's hope Henry can be the needed speed merchant.
I think the most important point coach Mike could make about the "selfish" type penalties is that they extend drives which means your defensive players have to spend more time on the field than they should and those extra plays lead to annoying injuries to important players like Leonard Williams when they should have been resting on the sidelines. I know injuries can happen at any time, but in general, the less plays you are out there for, the less chance of getting injured. (And yes, I also know this may make it more likely someone on the O-Line gets hurt because they may have more plays - I just know that when I saw big Leonard go down I yelled at my TV "that's why you don't stupidly extend drives" and I still feel that way two days later so I'm using the great Seaside Joe comment section to vent!)
SK thank you for this and especially about officials. I used to officiate, when I could reasonably walk…this was atrocious game but I noted some research from Danny. “We all know this. Sea 14, SD 16. Highest hanky day this season. Avg 15/game. So double the avg. previous high 27, by the same crew we had…more telling.
Avg 15 per game in NFL. This crew, throws 22 per in the 4 games they officiated this year. Now the asinine head butt by Nick bad & Coach Mac spent a lot of his presser on flags and it’s “not Seattle football”.
But I liked this from Kelly “it’s much better to have a defense that needs to hear “Whoa!” than it is to have a unit that needs to hear “Giddyup!”. And “it was kind of awesome watching Seattles defense go full tilt”. Almost at full strength. It’s a tough tough defense.
I also yell at the officials, a lot, but you are so correct that on the whole, these are the elite of the elite just like the players we watch. What Spoon did OOB or Nicks head butt, not “Seahawks football”. Tim I think noted it well. Coach Mac called them out globally to reporters and I’m sure he did so individually as well. I’m hoping Nicks was more “sowing his wild oats” if you will in that he finally healthy.
Unlike you SJ, I’m almost always nervous before a game, and especially against the Whiners. But if we finally have a complete full team game, Whiners better watch out.
Considered making my question even more wordy by adding my own affirmation of the refs. Not surprised you agree that the refs are amazing! 😊
These are the best handful of people in the world at what they do. They train incredibly hard and they keep the game moving while generally watching for fouls in a way that I can’t even imagine.
Also bitching about the refereeing is tedious and boring and no, your team isn’t systematically persecuted by the referees.
I don’t know SJ. I think Kupp consistently wows me as a pass catcher. I’ve now called you out a couple of times for not thinking of him at times I thought he should have been remembered (here & when you mentioned superstars on the team [or similar]). I know he’s not as productive with overall stats, but he’s not targeted until he’s really required and he seems to almost always produce when he is. Did you just forget him, or do you not rate him in both categories discussed here?

Truer words were never spoken.
There is only one Seaside Joe
And he’s OURS!
