We're almost for sure going to have to keep 4 RBs on the 53 cuz next year we're getting rid of one more than likely so it'd behoove us to not make the wrong decision and lose a potential next year star
If they keep 4 RBs, either Bobo or White (III) is almost certainly gone. Martinez is most likely safe (unless he doesn't show up when in pads), so is a 25yo McIntosh more important than one of those two?
Hard to say at this point for a position (like all of them, I guess) where you really need to see them with pads on vs NFL competition to know. However, I think Martinez being a full 4 years younger than McIntosh, who hasn't been able to leave a real footprint yet in the NFL, gives him the edge (on paper). If Martinez shows up vs NFL competition, I think it is more likely than not that McIntosh doesn't make the 53-man roster and (also) doesn't clear waivers.
There is a lot of debate about how many RBs will be kept. If they keep 4 RBs, both McIntosh and Martinez are most likely safe. But I'm not so sure. I keep leaning towards 3 RBs for a number of reasons, and if so, I think that age difference is going to be a major consideration since it gives the team a lot more comfort in the longer term. At 21 with 4 years of club control remaining, all Martinez has to be is adequate right now for him to stay on the roster. It's a safety net they don't have with McIntosh over the next couple years with decisions to be made on Walker and Charbs.
Hopefully he shows very well in camp and in the preseason and makes the initial 53, although we'll need to prepare ourselves for the fact some good players are going to be exposed to other teams this year, and that they will get picked up. That's a good problem really, it just doesn't feel like a good problem when it happens. But if your roster is good enough that other NFL teams want your castoffs, then you've got a good team.
I'm very curious to see the new offense. If we are going to play power football, use a FB, and run the football more, that will be very different from last year. One of the reporters (Greg Bell) I think said they had some plays in OTA's run out of the 'I' formation. That would be refreshing. Old school football. I've read a lot about which of our running backs is the better scheme fit for inside and outside zone running, but honestly, I have no idea. I don't think blistering speed is necessary to succeed in it, just thinking back to the Broncos RB's and how many of them had success without being particularly fast. Just shifty, tough runners. Decisive. Martinez seems to fit that mold, as does Charbs and MacIntosh. K9 may do really well in it as well, as he's plenty tough and speed is certainly isn't going to hurt. It's really who can read the blocks and make the right decision. Competition is good.
How the o-line blocks things up will matter of course, so that's probably the biggest mystery. I really, really hope the coaching staff can get these youngsters schooled up.
I favor dodgy RBs, especially when new to the NFL. Every college kid the Bruisers ran over or through is gone. Every guy they tried to avoid is now Everybody they see. Stronger. Quicker. Big gains come with a steep price. Rarely, if ever, do they see the big gaps. K9 showed us even circus act flips don't pay much. But the RBs who can get to where they ain't are Money. Open the holes, Boys. Let's appreciate why these guys don't play long. Let's realize how lucky we'll be to find K9 still has his Spark. Tougher. Stronger. Quicker.
Looking at Walker during OTA's and it's tough to imagine him getting hurt at all. The guy is beyond jacked! I guess even brick walls can turn an ankle.
A few years ago, I felt an urge to cheer for the veterans who had been working for a couple of years but who hadn't really done anything (thinking about Ken McIntosh & George Holani), but SSJ has made me aware of rookie contracts and salary cap issues and now I'm totally behind Damien Martinez. Go 'Hawks
It may be the quality of coaching from the Offense's end was truly sad last year. MM should feel these guys deserve his absolute level best in making up for it this year. I'm seeing high standards in play with no guarantee it will pay off. My bet is the Guys will meet and exceed the commitment. Rather than mumble "It's on me", Mike and John are showing them "It's on Us". No finger pointing.
In some ways, this is a great time of the season. We get DEEP profiles that include mouth-watering videos. All these guys look awesome. Add Martinez to that list.
I also wanted to point out DM weight. He was listed over 230 at Miami but checked in at the combine at 217, but says his playing weight is more like 225... Not sure how coaches will try to deploy him but he seems to have a versatile skill set. Looking forward to seeing what he can do.
Over 60 years ago, I was a really small linebacker who didn't play very much on a bad high school team. The idea of me standing in front of a 6'0" tall, 235 lb kid who saw me as an obstacle just makes my liver shiver.
I would be shocked if Martinez doesn't make the 53. He appears to be the real steal of the draft. He reminds me of Beast Mode in the way he runs through tacklers and drags them down the field. If he has a great training camp and pre-season it's it will be extremely hard not to keep him. George Holani's time may be over.
I'm just a little worried what the roster construction will look like given we'll be carrying at least 1 FB. Will we carry 4 RB's ? Maybe. But if we only carry 3, who gets exposed to other teams?
It would piss me off royally if we try to slip him onto the practice squad and somebody else picks him up. Like the Rams. Ugh! Hopefully he plays so well in pre-season that there is no doubt he belongs on the roster.
The numbers do seem wonky, but the unfortunate nature of the sport means that more than one player could start the season on PUP or IR or NFI. Just tough to say what the right numbers per position are until these guys survive camp and preseason.
Something different is in play this year. Something special. Mistakes, big mistakes, happened last year. Most management would shrug it off with 'shit happens'. Not these guys...
It's a beautiful Sunday, suitable for going to the beach or taking a swim in the kiddy yard pool, but I was watching Youtube's about the Seahawks and Outz and Horton and then along you come with two Youtube's about Martinez, and suddenly I'm glad I didn't go to the beach or own a kiddy pool.
Nice slant on this story. Running Backs deserve some better consideration when the next bargaining happens between the players union and the owners (boo!). They get used up, sometimes in Pop Warner football and sometimes not until they are pros, but get used up is what happens to 99.9% of those who give it a try.
Back when I began watching football with my older brother, running backs were the odds on favorites to get drafted first overall. Sixty some odd years later and running backs are the least likely to get rich off of football. They sacrifice more than any other position, have shorter careers than any other position, and yet contribute more often as a rookie than almost any other position. Seems weird, but unless someone sues the NFL or the players union comes to their rescue, running backs will continue to be the human kleenex of professional football.
Yeah, I'm sad for running backs. Not just for how the league has changed around them, but also the way that they're treated by some fans and the media. They want to use you for their fantasy leagues and a few good years in the backfield, but take as much money away from you as possible because "moneyball". The NFL will often advertise a RB for Monday Night Football or Sunday Night Football -- "hey come watch bijan robinson!" -- but then try to get rid of that player before he wants a pay day.
Make RBs salary cap exemptions or something, give them a bonus every time they rush for 100 yards, idk...but the fact that a Chris Carson made $9 million in his career and LJ Collier has made $16 million...I'm mindboggled.
Oooo. And behind Ouzts or Brady, watch out. No surprise if we find Zabel pushing and pile-driving. I like that he stays north-south, giving sheer grief to the Safeties and CBs. I wonder if his stats pick up in the 2nd half/4th quarters.
It took a bit, but I finally located a SSJ comment I posted on April 6th stating that I supported drafting Martinez in the 4th round. To be able to get DM in the 7th round just blows me away. I really like his contact balance and play style. Not saying it's like L Bell or Beastmode but he's got a little bit of both players' style in some respects. Hoping he flourishes and we can not worry about overpaying a RB in the near future.
Sometimes I feel embarrased about the crap I post because I don't proofread the way I should, but I take comfort knowing we're all friends and you can figure out what I probably meant.
So, I love the picture of him running with the cast. Seriously gave me goose bumps. Maybe just because it's Sunday and there is only 8 mote footballess Sundays. That is some Ronnie Lott like dedication. And yes, I know that footballess is not a real word but it is. ;-)

That is quite the age gap and not at all what I expected.

Good point, I totally overlooked that change.

Your wondering is right on the money.
1st quarter - 5.86 yards per carry
2nd quarter - 6.43 ypc
3rd quarter - 6.09 ypc
4th quarter - 7.10 ypc
"He lacks speed to win outside but does a nice job creating alternate routes using vision and agility when it’s congested inside."
"Martinez checks in at 6’, 217 lbs with a 4.51 40-yard dash, 1.56 10-yard split, and 35” vertical."
Those stats would indicate to me he does have the speed to get outside.
And he has a mean shwocking straight-arm to unleash when he's had enough with pestering.
love it!

nicely done!
yeah, Underdog Fantasy also said that fans should be very happy if their team can draft Mr. Martinez in the 4th round. Good pick, Scott.
are and more not is and mote. Guess I should proofread before I send.
Stick with the passion. We figger it out.
