I watched the full Lions/Cowboys match today and man Dak looks lost to me. Goff wasn’t his perfect self like he was vs the Seahawks but still threw 3 TDs no INTs which is a great day.
I will be disappointed if we don’t see what difference, if any, Howell makes to how the Seahawks dysfunctional offense performs. Having traded for him the Seahawks need some game tape in Grubbs scheme before they make decisions in the 2025 free agency/draft period.
I enjoyed reading the Seaside Joe article that didn’t exist today.
And I like the credit given to Purdie. I get why his rivals’ fans say, “He sux!!!”, but it’s not clear-headed. Personally, I think his greatest strength is that he’s unflappable. Smash him into the turf, and he calmly looks downfield to see if the pass is completed, calls the huddle, and runs the next play. He’s more of a robot than Russ ever was.
I would not have picked Spoon. I would have picked Carter. We had a decent backfield and a lousy DL. Carters PFF is 93 and he is one of the best. The argument was Carter had off field issues and / or did not interview well. I believe PC could have got the best out of him as well
JS needs to be really looked at hard. He has made a lot of bad picks and trades.
I saw JS as the Huskies tailgate before the Michigan game. He was an awesome and very kind guy. I didn’t have a chance to ask about the QB position (haha).
I continue to believe that the Seahawks see value in QBs that don’t work out at their first stop. IE Lock and Howell. I think that is why they went on the “QB Tour” in 2023. It wasn’t to draft anyone, it was to see what guys are like if they became available in a couple years. Bryce Young could be available already. Maybe Levis soon. But I think they would be interested in a guy like Anthony Richardson if he becomes available.
It’s not to say they wouldn’t draft a QB … I think they would if they thought the value matched the pick.
For awhile we almost never saw rookie QBs perform well out of the gate. Now we have recently seen 2 (stroud,Daniels) and maybe Caleb too. So maybe JS should be more aggressive but I would doubt it - as Joe has pointed out.
The game has gotten so fast and so complex that almost no one at any position is good out of the gate. That a few are doesn’t mean that a team can assume this of any draftee.
FWIW, Randy Mueller had a 4th or 5th-round grade on Richardson and was skeptical that he would ever adequately develop. As I recall, Young wasn’t on his board. Levis…ugh.
I wonder if we should start looking for lineman that don't make it on their first team also.
I have only heard some Seahawks fans say that we would've taken Richardson at 5 (I don't believe that to be true). I do believe that JS was intrigued by him as a prospect. Would he taken a flier on him for a cheap price? Maybe.
In general, as we saw in the last draft, QBs are very expensive to draft. I don't think JS wants to forgo the opportunity to get a Byron Murphy or Spoon to spin the rookie QB roulette wheel and hope he wins. And I would agree with JS' strategy
I respectfully submit that this post identified and, therefore, discussed the wrong problem.
The more relevant problem is "of the 34 quarterbacks drafted since 2022 (https://www.pro-football-reference.com/draft/draft-totals.htm), how would you have gone about making sure you got one of the six instead of one of the 28?" (setting aside Goff, of course).
The converse is trivial: "how do you make sure you get NONE of those six?". The Schniderian Answer is, of course, "don't pick any", except that it might be "wait until one of the picking teams can't figure out what to do with their guy, then pick him up for a song (and hope you can figure it out)".
I'm weirdly finding myself in the position of making excuses for Geno right now. I think he's played well, particularly in light of the fact he's facing pressure on almost every snap. The Hawks have played three legit defenses in the past 3 weeks and the offense didn't shit the bed in any of them. Detroit just made Dallas look silly. The Giants made Joe Burrow look ordinary tonight. And I don't need to say anything about the Niner's D.
If I had to lump the Hawks in one of the 2 QB groups you mentioned, I'd put them in the favorable QB position. If Darnold and Cousins can be in the good group then why not Geno? The next three games are key - Atlanta, Buffalo and the Rams do not have great passing defenses. I suspect Geno and the passing game will look good over these next games.
I agree. I see Burrow and Geno as very similar talent level QBs.
This falcons game is huge. This season can change right back to optimistic with one win. Could easily win 2 or 3 out of next three, go into the bye, and come out ripping against the Niners.
And I like the Hawks chances to win this Sunday. The mini-bye is very needed and I like being on the road right now in a dome.
The Rams get a pass in this QB discussion. They made their big moves to win a Superbowl, and they won the Superbowl. That elevates them above anything we've done, or the 49ers. Buccs did the same in going all in and winning it. They were the last two NFC teams to win it all. 2017 Eagles buck that trend, but idk how to qualify them in any discussion because what they & Foles did was nuts. Then we're back a decade to the 'Hawks.
If there's anything to try and glean from this is that, yes you should be changing the QB as the final big step before winning it all. Certrainly also applies to the Chiefs (Mahomes) & Patriots (Brady), and i'd say the Broncos (Manning) as well. And that covers off the last decade of winners.
QB is the #1 most important and influential position on the field, even with the "Defences win championships" statement carrying some weight. Like with not viewing the OLine as worthy of investment, JS seeming thought process to go with "he's fine" at QB will only lead to the team not reaching the next level.
In a League where there is no punishment for failure (i.e. finishing 8-9 outside the playoffs or 0-17 is the same, you can't get relegated and there is no significant competition reward money), taking the "it's fine" approach always annoys me. Geno is fine, he's even good. But good is not enough. The last 'good' QB to win the SB was Brad Johnson in 2002, and he just had to beat Rich Gannon on a horror day. So yes, we can hope for the 1-in-22 scenario with Geno, or try for the 21-in-22 scenario by doing something at QB soon. (*cough*Quinn Ewers*cough*)
Not only was there a SJ today, but it happens to be a very important one! In 2051, my only grandson (but third grandchild) will be born. This is an important event for my family, of course, but also for all of you fortunate enough to still be around in 2076 when he helps win the first of three Seahawks Super Bowl victories.
We have our quarterback, all we need now is a cohesive o-line and to dump DK and start Bobo. DK reminds me of Diggs, always bitching about the QB. He did it with Cousins and also Joshie A..
They seem to forget or don't give a damn that there is no "I" in team....
Purdy might end up being the luckiest break in 49'rs history. They had totally screwed it up too with the Trey Lance debacle. The type of mistake that usually sets franchises way back. The rookies are exciting but who knows yet.
SH isn’t there a kid with an arm coming out this next year who’s not going to be at the top of the draft???? Side note I always wanted Seahawks to draft Purdy after watching him some as. Cyclone.
The date of record is the date of posting/ delivery, therefore there was a Seaside Joe article TODAY. The streak is alive!
Yeppers, (what our kids 23 ~ 26 say), there's a lot to recognize in this brief (for KenJoe) post.

I watched that game too and was impressed with how much better the Seahawks did against the Lions, than the Cowboys did
It is readily apparent that the teams with winning records also have the best o-lines.

We can’t develop a new QB if we never draft one.

Such as Luke Joeckl? I’m coming around to the idea that high draft choices should be about NFL readiness rather than position value.
Dak is a $60 million dollar qb. Based on that, I don't think we can afford Geno, hahaha
