Riq Woolen probably won't be traded

I've noticed something about this year's trades that suggests the Seahawks will keep Woolen

Rumors of the Seahawks shopping Tariq Woolen, which were started by legitimate NFL insider Ian Rapoport and not one of the many knockoffs on Twitter, will probably end in a much less exciting departure via free agency than a trade. Rapoport’s colleague at the NFL Network Mike Garafolo recently tweeted that Woolen is probably still going to be a Seahawk after Tuesday’s deadline:

If that’s what happens, most people will argue that Seattle kept Woolen either because he’s good or because the secondary was hit with so many injuries recently that Mike Macdonald is now afraid of trading a cornerback with 52 career starts.

The primary answer is neither of those things.

The NFL trade market got a little hotter this week with four teams swinging trades, three of which included secondary players on the move: The Rams and Eagles both acquired cornerbacks, the Steelers added a safety. In fact, secondary players have been at the center of 6 of the last 9 trades.

Wouldn’t this increase the odds of Woolen being traded? Maybe. But there’s a trend within those trades that suggests the Seahawks would rather keep him and I’ll explain why after the jump in today’s bonus newsletter for Regular Joes and Super Joes.

So what is it about the NFL’s 2025 trade market that makes it unlikely Seattle will swing a deal even though a month ago it sounded like John Schneider was eager to move Woolen while he can? And if the Seahawks do trade Woolen, what is it that they are most likely to get in return?
