Hall of FAME. There's no argument that Wilson could be one of the most famous QBs of our lifetime, so far. Throughout his Seahawk run there was hardly any NFL game in the entire league where the announcers weren't comparing every other QB to Wilson and talking about how great the Seahawks were because of him. The FAME exploded when he went to Denver, to a ridiculous contract complete with a private office, personal trainer, and major role in choosing players followed by a complete bomb in performance never to recover from in every season since.
If he doesn't make it to the HOF, it's his own fault. Well, not entirely, I often question the motivation of the NFL in many of their decisions. The shame of it is his behavior and post-Hawk play made it very challenging to be proud of him now. I would be happier to support his induction if it didn't give the sense of being bitter-sweet.
Russ has had a long career, but not a long, good career. Had he been able to lead a second team to success, I’d support the bid. Instead he flamed out and held onto employment, just because experienced QBs with a history of success are rare and continue to have value.
It’s easy to say that we should look at his stats and early work and ignore the personality, but the personality strongly affected his performance. His special status caused resentment with the LOB, despite the team being at the top of the mountain. (His most positive personality moment was pushing the team past GB in the playoffs - after his string of interceptions.) His “camp” was sociopathic. He brought that to Denver, rather than bringing the success that they believed that they had traded for.
Then again, were the Denver scouts blind? Russ’ skill set was obviously limited, and without his legs, he became one dimensional. What a disaster.
Ask me again in three years, but I’m not optimistic.
To me, he suffers from billionaire brain, a disease that brings blight.
I would argue that Denver's scheme in his 1st year there was terrible and that's the reason his season was a disaster. He was actually my QB in fantasy in his year under Payton. His stats in Pittsburgh were okay - not great but not bad. There's nothing to say about his time with the Giants, that team stunk.
My point is that if Denver had a competent coach in his first year there we wouldn't even be talking about whether he was good or not.
I've never met the man and most everything negative I've heard about him are rumors or sentiments lacking complete context. Even his ex-teammates are fairly ambiguous when an interviewer is trying to pull out the goods. ADB defended the man's character on the "Get Got" podcast.
What's not subjective, however, is what he accomplished and what he contributed to here in Seattle. His football accomplishments, which is what is overwhelmingly what the HOF and ROH is all about, are undeniable. The only thing Russ has ever done to me personally on a consistent basis is bring me joy by propelling my Hawks into one of the most winning teams in the NFL today. He certainly belongs in the HOF.
Kurt Warner is in, Russell had a better and longer career. He should have been ORoY but was robbed while setting by breaking Peyton Manning's rookie TD record, because he was a short 3rd rounder. It isn't his fault that he repeatedly was robbed of accolades because of draft position and height. Russ should be in the hall.
ABSOULUTLY NOT1!!!! Ever since he lost us SB 49 because of his :"I want to be MVP" audible (yes go look at ALL the replays, he calls an audible and moves Lynch who is in complete bewilderment at Wilson's call) "I" am the team attitude, this totally precludes him from the HOF. Also, trying to get PC and JS fired, this is NOT HOF character. And of course, once he left us (good riddance) he has bombed 100%. Wilson is all about himself, so glad he is gone. PS I will be EXTEMELY disappointed if and when the Seahawks sadly put him in the ROH.
Russ was imo good at some things great at others and lacked some skills in certain areas. His bid to Canton might be accepted, but I'm not sold he's worthy. But I also do not think Eli Meaning is worthy. They both rode the teams success and do not necessarily stand on their own merits imo. What could push him in is exactly what SSJ was saying about him opening up opportunities for others and whatnot. I got nothing against the guy but he just doesn't seem like a HOF guy to me. Close but not quite.
No. Russell Wilson lied to an entire fan base that mostly adored him. He never owned it, never addressed it, and never apologized. The way he left was a straight backstab. I don’t care what he did for the franchise — he couldn’t carry that success anywhere else, and to me that keeps him out of the Hall of Fame conversation.
He talks nonstop about humility while dressed head to toe in designer clothes. It started feeling like he cared more about his relationship with Ciara than football. He got slower, less dedicated, and the hunger disappeared.
And the robot interviews? I doubt broadcasting will be any different — just the same polished, predictable drivel we’ve heard for years. Russ can take those big hands and park them right on his butt cheeks.
It’s easy to let the last things you remember about Russ have an outsize effect on how you remember him. I always thought he was too ‘boy scout’ during his career, but man I COULD NOT WAIT for Sundays to see what magic he was going to display on the field.
Yes, in his last years with the hawks his performance, both on and off the field was like waking up the next morning after a great party to find the place trashed; pizza crusts on the carpet, cigarette butts in the Champaign glasses, and the stale air of excess. Who wants to hang around in that atmosphere?
His flaws became obvious in his later years but in my mind they pale in comparison to the thrills he gave me in his early career. He’s definitely HOF worthy in my book.
It’s probably not going to happen but the scenario I’d like to see is for him to sign as Genos backup. I imagine Geno flaming out with Russ stepping in to save the season for the Jets… if he could only control his Napoleon tendencies. Save the moon ball for once in a blue moon and just take what the opponents give, trade in the super man cape for a humble man shirt. I think he could easily rehabilitate his legacy, … but it would have to start with his self perception.
A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent…let’s agree that RW would be challenged on several of these…
I have complaints about RW. However he’s the best QB the Hawks have ever had, and for about 6 years he was top 3 in the league. And he was the first hugely successful dual threat QB.
I think there’s a real solid chance he’s second best after this season. Sam Darnold will have no problem handing the ball to Charbs, Price, or whoever at the one yard line, and would never want his own office or care about individual accolades over championships. At least that’s the impression I get from him. I think Darnold’s makeup as a player makes him a better QB than RW, and that would be apparent should the Hawks make it two in a row.
I love how Darnold played last year and I expect him to be at least that good again this season. But he needs to do it over a longer period to become the best in team history. In my opinion.
The Hawks are so good across all three phases that Sam can throw for 100 yards and they'll still win. I really like Sam as a person and a QB but he's not carrying the Hawks like Russ did for so many years.
I think he can carry the Hawks, but does not even remotely feel like he has to and get those individual awards. If you look at him going toe to toe with Stafford in the NFC championship game, he truly did help carry the Hawks. I’m not a stats guy, but no way we win that game if he doesn’t make some incredible plays.
ok but how insufferably corny are all the other HOF QBs?
I kid, I kid…mostly. I *do* think part of Seahawks fans turning on Russ is the combination of his corny-ass personality and the way he went out.
When he was winning games for the Seahawks I remember thinking, “man he’s corny but it’s not that bad. What is everyone else talking about?”
Then when he left it’s like a switch flipped and I immediately got where the rest of the country was coming from. “‘Broncos country, let’s ride’? What is the corny mf on?” Felt kinda like when you see an ex who hurt you after a while and now all you can see are their flaws instead of the things you loved.
I definitely support Russ for HOF but the intensity of that flip makes it harder.
I’d be more willing to call a truce if RW admitted his inappropriate handling of strong arming ownership to dump PC/JS and his insistence of being elevated far above the other players on the TEAM. He should throw in an apology for the backhanded insult of Seahawks fans he made upon arriving in Denver. I’ll take my cue from former players. Let’s see how Lynch, Sherman and Kam handle it.
I can set differences aside, but RW has to come, hat in hand, and apologize to Seahawks fans, former teammates and the organization for his fat head, holier than thou, my sh*t don’t stink attitude. If he comes off sincere (for once) than I will follow how his former teammates handle it.
The ball is in his court. I’m not saying he doesn’t deserve to be in the HOF, I’m just saying I am not going to get behind it until he eats some humble pie and sets things right.
I have no opinion on whether or not RW ever gets to the HOF. He's been the recipient of the Walter Peyton Man of the Year award, which is admirable. His character has been lacking for a long time and the year I noticed the biggest change was after his great big $145M contract. I don't know how much weight the NFL puts on character when it comes to HOF inductees. I certainly enjoyed his early seasons, but tired of him and Ciara pushing image and a string of products on the public very quickly. Apologies are meaningless if behavior to follow doesn't change, and he's way too devoted to himself.

I’d vote yes. All is forgiven. He provided ten years of what could be called the good old days. That’s pretty good for one guy.
Was Russ cringe - absolutely.
Was there a lot going on behind the scenes that was distasteful - pretty sure there was.
Did the man kick ass at football - no doubt about it.
And it's that last thing that should determine whether he's a Hall of Famer or not.
