This was an incredible in-depth look at the Grubb offensive scheme and the best I've read, even amongst the Husky content that has surfaced the past few years.
The strength of D.K. means that he can turn short yardage into big yards, and could benefit from the underneath cross routes mentioned. I think we will see a lot more bombs for Lockett (which will be a throwback to his moonball catches from Russell). And I think Jaxon Smith-Njigba is going to have a breakout year and some big plays in this offense.
Yes, I can't wait to watch the next video he was teasing and to see sort of what he means about the national championship game. Definitely agree about JSN.
- Not much I can add to this one, I think TCP's answers speak for themselves. Can't wait to see this offense fully in motion with starters in Week 1. Curious to see how the run game shakes out between the tackles or if not, that should mean Walker's speed becomes a huge factor by reaching the edges.
If the starters get and stay healthy Grubb has a lot of the things that TCP says made the game plan successful: athletic linemen, 3 good to great receivers, speed in the run game to get to the outside and be a receiving threat, 2 (hopefully good) blocking tight ends to support the line and go for delayed crosses and a Pocket passer QB who has good accuracy and plays more with his head than his legs.
Excited to learn more.
Btw how do you all watch Seahawks games? Are they always live where you live or does anybody have NFL Game Pass or anything different?
Because in Germany I have to get lucky that they sometimes choose the Seahawks Game for one of their 3 Sunday Broadcasts
I don't do this, but I have a friend of a friend who tested this last year and plans on using a VPN (ExpressVPN $100/year) and then paying for NFL+ premium ($15/month). VPN is set to a server in Seattle, NFL+ premium shows all live local games (including the ones that are not Seahawks games, but are shown on Seattle TV), but it only works on a mobile device (casting not available). Added bonus is that with the VPN, you could access King5's livestream without paying for NFL+ premium, but they have fewer Seahawk games this year than ever. Added, ADDED bonus is that NFL+ premium also includes the RedZone channel, if you're into that kinda thing, like me... er, my friend's friend. ExpressVPN offers a 30day free trial (auto renews, remember to cancel, but they will refund it if you barely miss the date)
It is a cheaper alternative to YouTubeTV's Sunday Ticket ($450+ YouTubeTV subscription of about $75 for a season).
I'm assuming we knew this offense would require quick OLmen in the run game when we were drafting, so it'll be interesting to see how many incumbents make the squad.
Love this article, SJ! I really enjoy the variety of angles and styles you give in this newsletter. Today, an interview supported with videos; tomorrow, a poll; the next days, an origin story, a roster breakdown, a response to another sites online piece, etc.... just SO much variety here! How could one NOT subscribe??
Another great article. Will be interesting to see what Grubb can do with Cross. Don’t really see him pulling on runs to the right. Maybe he will use Williams and then block down?
What’s interesting is that Huff and Grubb came together as a packaged deal. Having the OLine coach on the same page means that the scheme doesn’t need to be taught and learned by the coach, Huff is already read in.
I don't remember seeing any examples of the tackles pulling in the TCP films. I do remember TEs and Gs pulling frequently. With so many outside run concepts, I don't think they will ask Ts to pull that far, regardless of their athleticism. It would just take too long to get to the defenders over there.
Grubb used to pull his tackles and guards on counters while at UW. Of course, he had Troy Fautanu at tackle on that team and I’ve read he was considered more athletic than your average tackle/linemen.
Loved that you called it a chess match. I coached youth football in Alaska. And that was exactly how I viewed the game and play calling. It allowed a lot leeway. With part time kids the time to prepare limited but when they executed well and we called it right, kids had a blast.
Great article SJ. Loved this one. Thank you for your research and tell them thank you for response. One great comment I got from that article was about the triple receivers and then about what TE and RB could do. What potential we have with DK on those deep plays and both JSN and Tyler both deep and outside and/or cross and of course Fant and K9/Charbo in the intermediate. The one gap I saw was about QB. My criticism of Geno has been ability to disguise and look off. Great when intended target open. Play breaks down I sense poor execution. This Grubb style may not fit. However Geno can learn so hoping things come together. This was a very enlightening and exciting post based on the offense we have.
I love the idea of the play diagrammed in the article where the back goes deep on a wheel route and I can see K9 or Charb scoring a bunch of TDs on that one.
It sounds to me like the weak link to worry about is the OL, as it will be easier to execute with better protection. I suppose that's true for most offenses, but seems to be particularly important in this one.
Most excellent, Ken. I am finding my football going to deeper understandings after 50 years holding a passion for the Game. I can see how having two Master-Adjusters like Grubb and Mack going at each other will open up whole new strategies, week by week, hopefully without a ceiling. I can attest to my synapses slowing with age, so their youth is a huge advantage. In fact, everyhere I look, I see 'Advantage- Seahawks'.
Saturday, I saw Howell beginning his identity on this Team. He brings us a gunslinger's Run-Pass-Scramble Option to augment a field full of Alpha Males sharing a bone. I expect we may see Geno's own version of this. Risky, but then I don't see Coach Mack being risk-averse when a Win is on the line. I suspect we will keep a 3rd QB on staff, if this is anywhere near their designs. Clock is ticking, PJ. Hell, do the unexpected and just start Sam out of the blue sometime. Give Geno a rest...
I'm sure Grubb is getting lots of feedback from Mike Mac as they go against each other every day, which can only help Grubb refine his stuff. If our defense is that much better than last year, and tougher to go against, that has to make our offense better as well. If we had to play Baltimore again this year, one would think we'd do much better given the offense goes at that same/similar defense every day.
I don't expect Grubb to run his offense the same as in Washington, although I'm sure he'll bring some of the same concepts with him. What I hope the most is that he can adjust in-game based on what the defense is doing. We've been way to slow to do that for the past few years, on both sides of the ball.
This might be my favorite article so far. And bonus, the attributes that made Grubbs offensive strong seem to align with the assets we have in spades. Of course, the o line has to work (makes me even MORE excited for Williams) and Geno has to be able to read defenses BUT this is exciting stuff. What I am taking away from this is that the mindset on both sides of the football is deception so as to counter what teams are queuing up on attack. September can’t get here soon enough!!!!
I think Grubb won't lack the ingenuity to hang with NFL DCs as he will have one of the deepest pockets in the league to employ the right staff that can augment the more layered notions of any good gameplan.
This also helps to highlight the shortcomings of our recent DCs and OCs under Carroll. Though I missed Carroll, Clint Hurt, Ken Norton/etc. were not outspent but more so clearly outmatched by the likes of Kyle and Sean. Hopefully Mike and Grubb can put them on their heels for once. Fingers crossed
I would love to hear more about your sources thoughts on Grubb's ability at play calling. Using deductive reasoning, I would assume he has a high opinion of Grubb's ability at play calling because his opinion of his schemes was that they are merely competent compared to the professionals he is up against. Though, he seems to think Grubb was a decent choice to make the jump from college to professional football as he was clearly out of their class, as a general rule.

Joe… This is outstanding!!! Great inside view from the OC’s space..

Great post, SSJ!
Super deep.
I just came across this video from a Detroit Lions channel that had some really cool things to say about our guys.
