NE does seem to have atrocious special teams, so I'll hazard a guess there will be a significant advantage that the Seahawks will take on special teams. The Hawks do have to focus on Brendan Schooler, as he seems to be the only competent coverage guy but he's really good. They need to double team him blocking.

I'm still in shock sort of. Numb, even. But I'm happy as heck, and proud of this team from top to bottom. They select for nice. Good policy.

I cried after we won the superbowl and I cried on sunday. That last comment really was perfect. I'm 34 now, when we won the superbowl I was 22, when we lost the superbowl a year later I just KNEW that we would be back with that same core of players. That obviously didn't happen and we have all been stuck with the taste of a goal line interception in our mouths ever since. I make it a point to tell young fans to live in the moment and appreciate what they are watching because it is SO rare to watch your favorite team be so dominant and win so many football games in one year, I love this team and I love the culture we have created as fans. I remember walking down occidental and pioneer screamin "SEA!!HAWKS!!!!" for shitty teams, I remember screaming my ass off and losing my voice just so my team could have a slight advantage even when they won 7 games. Now we finally get to get back to the good memories, the ones that make all this worth it. I hope you all get to watch this game with people you love that love the seahawks just like we do!! GO HAWKS, LETS GET ANOTHER ONE!!!

...Cooper Kupp and his relationship with Efton Chism III. When does this guy get legit cred for coaching. Kupp should be in consideration if KK goes shopping..

Stephen Pitell's avatar

Coaching is an eighteen hour/day/7 days a week all year round. I'm not sure many (wealthy) former players want to dedicate their lives to that kind of schedule, but Kupp certainly has the credentials to be offered a job as a receivers coach.

On your QB rankings, all things considered (including leadership):

- Matt Ryan and maybe Donovan McNabb ok, yes I'd take them. Eli for me has always been a quandary, honestly is a push at best and if he hadn't won SB's, he'd not even be in the conversation with these others. Hasselbeck and Brad Johnson a push vs Darnold too. Can't believe I'm saying this but I've now watched the man for a season, saw how he played the last Niners reg season game, the Niners playoff game, and then toe to toe with Matthew Stafford just now. What more could we or anyone want? Pat Mahomes, Joe Burrow, Josh Allen, Lamar or Dak? With the trade-offs inherent in those choices? Remember, four of those guys were sitting at home for the playoffs, in part due to the trade-offs they require.

I don't know man -- only Ryan and maybe McNabb for me, would be choices vs Darnold.

Scott M's avatar

I'm sorry but Philip Rivers deserves to be a pro bowler before Sanders...this is crazy talk. Even Dillon Gabriel would be more deserving.

It's one thing to do something for TV ratings. It's another when that decision adversely affects other quarterbacks who are being robbed for bonuses and accolades because of it.

zezinhom400's avatar

Never in my life have I seen anything more shocking than Shedeur in the Pro Bowl. Tyler Schough is more deserving. Aaron Rodgers?? Jesus

Randall Murray's avatar

Well Tyler NFC but yes absolutely the most ridiculous thing ever by the NFL.

zezinhom400's avatar

I should add that I no longer watch the Pro Bowl given it's become a joke even to the players at this point. But with Shedeur now there, I GUARANTEE I ain't watching.

AKBear's avatar

It’s very very unwatchable. Who wants to go all out and risk injury in such a violent game?

KHammarling's avatar

I love the Pro Bowl's re-invention as a gimmicky skills fun time fairground attraction! For as long as i've followed football (not as long as many here but plenty long enough) the Pro Bowl never meant anything, and at least the NFL has tried to do something to make it interesting.

In isolation it's really cool to see these genuinely top tier athletes doing impressive skills! Last year's passing challenge showcased why Mayfield and Darnold were so highly regarded prospects, the way they threw the balls was visually impressive and a step above Wilson or Maye (how seriously some take it idk, but it was a difference). The switch to Flag Football has been awesome, putting an emphasis on speed and showy-ness. Blah blah i could go on because i think it's just silly fun that's a cool showcase of football, let alone making it accessible to a new generation of fan, and surrounding activities to get fans engaged.

Don't care if it's Shedeur. He's still a massive personality that should bring some fun to things. Pro Bowl hasn't meant "best" in a long time, no QB is feeling hurt by his being picked. I'm still looking forward to the event and the fun end-of-school-year vibes it gives.

Stephen Pitell's avatar

Given the violence involved in real football, I agree it was the rational thing to do.

Scott M's avatar

I could not agree more...pro bowl games with flag reinvented the whole event and made it infinitely better imo...but come on!

Nicholas Donsky's avatar

I think Sam's early career struggles eliminated any arrogance and narcissistic tendencies. He understands that football is a team game and the only stat that counts is the won, lost record. I don't see him asking for a private office away from his team mates. I think one of the great strengths of this team is that it is a brotherhood. No big egos because " we do not care."

The MVP of the Hswks is JS. Who ever thought a team could go from 10 and 7 to to the SB in only 2 years,?

Derek A's avatar

The Patriots were 4-13 last year….

AKBear's avatar

Let’s see how they do with a first place schedule next year.

Randall Murray's avatar

I’m not sure he had any but he was a USC guy so maybe. But it’s more about the organizations. Recall Geno was there as well. Baker another example. Or Danny Dimes in NY. Takes a break. Gets a break. Goes to Indy and Indy not NE potentially in SB. Organizations a lot to do with mental side of the game.

I had many favorite plays, but I have to go with Ken Walker juking the Rams LB on 2nd and 2. In real time it looked like the screen glitched. He's really improved in his decisiveness this year.

The Seahawks and the QB position.

I love what JS has done with the QB position.

When every person that talks about football claims right and left, up and down, "you need a franchise QB", who is the "QB of the future" ... The Seahawks just simply do not care.

I think back to all those Russell Wilson negotiations, and rumors that JS was ready to trade RW for Josh Allen etc. I think JS has always been counter NFL conventional wisdom when it comes to the QB. We never use a high draft pick on a QB. We have generally not overpaid for the QB. We traded away our "Franchise" QB (which, IMO, sparked this whole team and set off the rebuild), then when finding a star QB we refused to negotiate with him when he wanted more and traded him away.

All these actions go with the team's ethos. The QB is a point guard. I don't think the Seahawks want to make the QB out to be a Greek God because that is not how we want to play. Which also leads to more stability and wins based on trenches, defense, and running the ball.

Based on what I am seeing, the QB is just another position to JS and the Seahawks.

(This is not meant to be any slight to SD who just played a great game and we needed it. Kudos to him).

This will be very interesting to see what happens now? Will JS stick to what he has been doing and not pay Darnold $50M+? This whole season I thought we would get a good idea for SD value based on Daniel Jones. Unfortunately, he got injured which likely cost him a ton of money and us a peak into the market.

So what will JS do? What should he do?

I hope he stays the course (staying on the less expensive side at QB). Just like this article pointed out. We have a nice competitive edge with the retread QBs that don't command huge amounts of your salary cap. But if SD does win the SB that could become a tougher negotiation.

The NFL machine is always entertaining and we will see what happens. Hopefully, Sam will have a SB winning QB attached to his resume shortly!

This is a great read IMHO, and brings up one of the biggest debates I had going with Rob Stanton (albeit a few yrs ago now) who espouses that Schneider has always wanted a franchise QB (mostly on his apparent interest in Allen, and that he came from GB which had always had a franchise QB) -- but completely ignoring what you point out: Schneider does not spend high draft picks on "franchise" QB's and has never traded for one either. The debate came to a head when Stanton was pushing Will Levis as "our guy" and was convinced Schneider should take him (stuff he denies now but believe me, he was all-in on Levis). But I'm with you: Schneider is not going to pay a QB $50m and his team-building approach is to not have to depend on a franchise QB. He DOES insist on accuracy though, and on someone who can generate explosive plays. So a $30m guy not a $50m guy.

I actually think your call-out of Daniel Jones is exactly right, and if we can't get a friendly contract with Darnold I think our next QB will be like Daniel Jones.

In fact, our Daniel Jones is already on the roster.

Drew Lock.

With Milroe as a potential alternative, if he can improve his accuracy enough to be our next Russell Wilson.

All of them asked to be point guards as you correctly say.

I love it!

BEASTMODE808's avatar

He LOVED Levis. For sure.

Been watching him on Seahawks Collective though, and he seems like a great guy (Staton).

Mike McD's avatar

I do agree … He comes off much better when he is not slamming the keys.

In his defense, there are so many trolls out there that it can be hard to be a public type figure and figure out who is genuine and who is trolling.

Some comments come off much different that intended in chat rooms than if people were chatting in person.

zezinhom400's avatar

He is, actually, until you challenge him or worse, point out a miss of his — whereas our SSJ calls himself out before anyone else feels the need.

Mike McD's avatar

Oh ... I remember those Rob Staton days. He was huge Will Levis fan (what could we get Levis for now?). Then the Rob Staton minions said "Oh man we just missed out on Anthony Richardson!". When John Boyle's article clearly stated there were 2 at the top of the draft board: Spoon and Will Anderson. I don't think we were ever taking a QB at #5 overall.

I can still remember Gregg Bell asking JS what the plan at QB was after that draft. I think JS wanted to strangle him. Like, how can you not get it?

I will say though, I have evolved. Around the Super Bowl and years that followed. I was a "Pay Russell whatever he wants" opinion ... But having lived through it, I would tell myself that that is the wrong course.

I would much rather have a great team than another Let Russ (Sam) Cook situation.

I am a pretty big Drew Lock believer. I think he would be great in this offense.

I am with Z! If we can keep the QB contract low and invest in the trenches and keep our O-line together, keep drafting for our D-line as some key players are getting older. That would be my ideal.

What a great team. It has been fun to watch this thing get built, and along the way some people lose their minds over someone like Will Levis!

zezinhom400's avatar

I had forgotten about Richardson but you're totally right, Stanton was all about the franchise QB and irritatingly, insisting Schneider was a franchise QB apologist but without a shred of actual evidence for his insistence. Actually the evidence was to the contrary!

And then there was that Jim Nagy interview, couldn't believe it. Stanton brings up Levis and starts in with all his tools and how hot a prospect he is and Nagy says "uh, I'm not certain most of the GM's see him that way". I had expected that to shock Stanton enough to say, "Wait a minute, what? How do they see him then??" but instead, he literally moved on to asking about another player! I guess because he didn't want to risk his premise being shot down? Man, I lost total credibility in him right then and there, and subsequently even more in the debate on his forum. Even though I think he has good insights in general -- but just an impossible ego.

And this is now the lead-in to the comments section, I've just copy/pasted it:

Seahawks Draft Blog Comment Policy

Stick to football, heated discussion is fine but debate opinions not individuals, don't review the blog

Don't review the blog. Hmmm....

Mike McD's avatar

My opinion of Rob is exactly the same.

Haha ... I remember that interview also and noticed the same thing! Talk about blinders on. And that is coming from Nagy, a guy that Staton respects almost as much as anyone. And he still couldn't see it! That tells me ... Staton will never adjust his opinions. He just is what he is.

Still overall additive but "impossible ego" is exactly right.

I haven't been over there is awhile. But my big problem is that it promotes all these minions of his. That read and regurgitate whatever he says as if it is the one and only truth. I would constantly read a very reasonable opinion that just gets attacked by Rob and his minions. Just not very interesting. I try to get as many different perspectives as possible. And that site there is basically one.

I think what Sam might be paid on the next contract is a fluid number and constantly changing. How does he play next year? How does Milroe look next year? What does Kubiak’s replacement feel about Sam? What are teams offering for him if he does want $60 million a year? Time will tell. For me I’m just looking to get a win in two weeks!

Mike McD's avatar

Danno!

Those are great points. A fluid situation indeed. And we do have a wildcard developing as we speak. Can’t forget about Milroe.

Also, to your point, the NFL changes so rapidly that it makes this situation fluid.

I don’t see the Seahawks changing his contract this offseason with two years left, but I’ve already heard Richard Sherman say they should.

One more game! What a ride

Danno's avatar

He’s got up to $5 million in incentives he can earn of this current contract each year. I believe he will get $4 million in total bonus money if they win the Super Bowl. I think he’s already earned over $20 million in bonuses. It’s a great way to write up a contract. Many players have seen a performance drop once they get the big contract. A lower base salary with incentives might drive players to perform at their peak and not play fat, dumb and happy with a mountain of cash already in the bank.

Barry R Carlson's avatar

Off topic. Do not underestimate the Patriots! It seems they are often criticized for their soft schedule. But they won those games and they could only play the schedule they were given. Their defense carried them through the playoffs. I see a balanced team that is a threat.

I just had to get that off my chest. They are a Super Bowl team.

zezinhom400's avatar

No doubt about it, and Vrabel has them believing as well.

Chip Mac's avatar

First of all what a fun read SSJ! Taken me a day to recover from attending “the game” and watch it on TV, so different than attending. Tariq has to go, the Hawks will “let him test the market” but he’s won’t be writing them back. Good bye and good luck Traiq and by the way you might want to check in with DK about the diva thing.

Chuck Turtleman's avatar

Thanks to Kenny and every single one of you in the SSJ community and chat. It's been so fun "watching" games with you and learning more about the team and the sport. Disagreements are rare and almost always cordial when they do occur. I don't have any fellow fans to watch games with and will sequester myself into my house with only my wife -and my phone will be silenced -for the Super Bowl. But I will be checking into chat during commercial breaks and cheering them on with you guys. Even a "YESSS!!!!!!" or "Bobo!" gets me pumped almost like someone is on the sofa (or in Sunday's case, standing and pacing) with me.

Hopefully LX will be more like the divisional game than the NFCCG and I won't need to get on heart meds.

More Bobo Chuck!!

I'm going to start calling John Schneider 'Johnny Value' after his long run of fishing around and finding value at seemingly every turn. Not sure how, but I bet if you could calculate the value of a roster Johnny Value would rank near or at the top in best roster for the money.

Rozone's avatar

After seeing a plethora of articles headlining things like "controversial Kupp catch" and "NFL to investigate facemask penalty that wasn't called" while showcasing the Rams players reaction to the loss yesterday I got to thinking about how the Seahawks are always dismissed no matter how good the team is in the league. Has Goodell ever come to a game in Seattle? Is it the city he doesn't like? The Patriot/Denver game isn't dominating sport media. Paul and Jody Allen have done incredible things with their money. Not just for Seattle, but in medical research. Paul didn't demand accolades, and neither does Jody. We never see the camera pan to the executive box where she sits to watch the games.

AKBear's avatar

I doubt if they are talking about the missed PI against Shaheed late in the game. The announcers even downplayed it. They went to their rules expert who said something about the ball being uncatchable. Then they show the replay and the ball hits Shaheed in the helmet. And no one says anything - super embarrassing. Doh…..

Rozone's avatar

That's not what they were talking about. It was the facemask on Stafford. There was a video clip accompanying the article.

AKBear's avatar

I’m just saying that there were missed calls both ways.

Chuck Turtleman's avatar

Hear, hear. I've long said that the best team owner is the one you don't even know what looks like. Hire the best people and let them do their work. There's a trickle down effect from not trying to take credit. The GM, coaches and players are more likely to follow suit. When this team sells, I hope that whoever becomes the new owner understands this.

Nicholas Donsky's avatar

Amen. Every team that is a dumpster fire has an owner who thinks he's also the GM and HC. Hello Jerry Jones!

Rozone's avatar

The work being done through The Allen Institute is never publicized. Compare that to the Gates Foundation. I just hope when the time comes for a new owner, it isn't Bezos. I like the Green Bay model of ownership.

Charley Filipek's avatar

Yes, the Green Bay model where the city's citizens all own a piece of the team.

If all of the teams were this way then a team wouldn't be moved out to a different city in the dark of the night. Also the owner wouldn't hold a city hostage to build an expensive stadium just so they could get more profit.

Chuck Turtleman's avatar

If I recall, the Green Bay model can't be done with another team and is grandfathered in. Whoever can afford to buy the team will almost certainly be seen to have controversies. I'm resigned to that. Paul Allen was a unicorn, but I've even read some distasteful things I'd rather not have about him and Jody. Though nothing was earth-shattering and I'd hate it if everything I've ever done or said was dug up. None of us have lived a perfect life.

Bezos is the betting favorite currently, though maybe it will be someone like Phil Knight if Bezos buys another NFL team before the Hawks go up for sale. But I'd rather an owner I don't like as a person who runs things the way they have been than my best friend owning them and meddling. Or God forbid, wanting to move them.

Rozone's avatar

Of course the mandate of ownership is for the billionaires to control the money these sports generate. The culture of wealth needs a swift kick in the butt.

Rusty's avatar

Anything but a Bezos ownership.

Danno's avatar

The hit (DPI) on Shaheed at the sideline came so early. That was far more egregious and costly than the face mask. The ball hit Shaheed in the head. How is that uncatchable? Officiating mistakes were made both ways in this game. If anything the NFL is always going to want the Rams to win because of their market size. The Rams were gifted a Super Bowl win against New Orleans when another Rams CB arrived LONG before the ball got there. FTR!

Charlie Gage's avatar

Throughout the game, I tried to not think of the officiating as one sided but the refs were clearly calling a game in favor of the Rams. At least four very egregious DPIs not called along with a number more that were not as obvious and yet, only one DPI was called on the Rams in the game. I commented to my daughter that it's pretty hard to play another really good team AND the refs but the Hawks have done it before and came out on top. Vividly reminded me of the 1st 'Hawk's super bowl and the refs doing the same for the Steelers.

steve illman's avatar

Yeah, both feet inbounds, he's pushed in the back, ball hits his helmet. Uncatchable??? Refs obviously have never seen a Tyler Lockett catch..
