I remember messaging you one night after watching back to back Boise State and UNC games and just being inspired by Maye after the 2nd game. Im on the same boat with you about 2024. Taylen Green from BSU is probably 2025. 6'6 and faster than Cam Newton. But Maye in 2024 I think will be the first QB off the board. He's so smart and quiet, but John Wick on the field. I'm looking forward to your QB articles going forward. Also its time to pose a possible great question for you personally. With Grayson hurt and out for the rest of the season is this not the perfect set up to snag him in the 4th or 5th round???
-It's appropriate that Young might be the only QB that the Hawks would grap with their first pick. Why? If Smith were 25 instead of 31, our QB would be set for the next ten years. Young is young and currently that's his only advanatage over Smith.
-Will Levis is still solidly in third place in the vast majority of mocks and amazingly, Tanner McKee is still going in the first round in many mocks.
-I wonder when the market will reset. GMs are not stupid and they're not going to put their job on the line for the mock draft QB darlings. However, I sincerely hope they do.
-Should San Francisco draft a QB? It would take some huge balls but's it's the right thing to do.
-I've started sifting through the names of eligible non-QBs that most fit our needs and likely won't go in the first round. I'm also collecting those "diamonds in the rough" names. It's really fun this year.
Nothing on Penix this time? Where do you see him going? Which round; not to whom.
Though he has a year of eligibility left after 2022, I don't see him staying at Washington. Would be insane given that the competition is falling off this year and next year promises to be deeper. Plus, he's a 5th year junior. I don't see how he would benefit by returning. Wherever he lands this year is likely to be better than where he lands a year later. Plus with his injury history, would he want to risk another year without a contract?
I agree on Mc Call, sitting behind Geno for a year or two. I also agree that QBs from Ohio State are "systems QBs". Just check all the failed Buckeye QBs on the NFL for the last 40 years !
The emergence of Geno opens up the Hawks to draft for heir biggest needs....D. tackle, interior O lineman, quality 3rd wide out and 2 athletic LBs.
As I've posted before. QB is the hardest position to evaluate ,.ergo
As a two year reader of Seaside Joe, I am 100% behind Grayson McCall. It might be a nerve racking day two pick waiting until the third or fourth round where we have two picks. I can see the Seahawks waiting until round 4 and giving Grayson a year or 2 if he needs it.
I have read some reports that Bryce Young and CJ Stroud are not round 1 Quarterbacks. I could be way off base but Young is a later round 1 pick, where as I don't think Stroud is an NFL quarterback, that's where I maybe way off base.
If things continue with Geno which by my eyeball they will, Seattle needs to sign him for three years and have wiggle room in year 3 that Grayson may take over. Geno physically is like a 26 year old who has been toning his body in the weight room for 8 years. He has taken some huge hits and bounced up like nothing happened. Just last week a man came open on the blitz, Geno was looking the other way and he got whacked. Either Geno saw him or felt him at the last second I don't know but he didn't fumble and bounced right up. He must have big hands ✋️!!! During the preseason all I saw from Geno was what seemed like check downs, I thought Drew was our best option. I guess there is so much more that we don't get to see. Without any shame I was WRONG, Geno is a top ten quarterback and is putting up great numbers and points. The most impressive thing is, he is a grown ass man leading his team. There is not one Seahawk player ,coach , receptionist, trainer that doesn't believe Geno couldn't win a Super Bowl. Count me in as a born again Geno follower. Let's get Joe's guy Grayson let him sit a year or two behind Geno
Stroud and Young are absolutely worthy of a high first round pick. I don't think I've seen a mock that doesn't have both of them in the top ten. Do you really think the Colts, Texans, or Lions would pass on either guy?
I'd wager he'll be gone by round 3 assuming he continues at the rate his season is going. I think if they're anywhere near as high on him as some of us here are, he's going to cost a 2nd. And I'm fine with that. My only worry is that GMs are smarter than the talking heads and somebody poaches him early.
McCall is the 5th highest rated college QB, and as one of them is Maye, make that the 4th entering the draft behind Stroud and Hooker, or even 3rd if Duggan isn’t eligible. Not that I know diddly, but surely no way he is still on the board in the 4th
My fear as well. i have heard so many good things ab out McCall, I think I would be fine spending at least a 2nd on him, if not our first. JS can trade down Denver's first and pick up a few more picks if there isn't a pash rusher or receiver they are in love with available. All I am saying is that if you think that you are picking the next Brady, don't wait until the 6th round just because you think he may still be available. If he will be good, pick him where he deserves to be picked (or at least before anyone else will pick him).
“The Seahawks have two 2023 first round picks but I think there’s some sound strategy in considering a trade that nets them an extra pick in 2024 instead.”
Like this idea! Depending on who you trade firsts with, kinda like a lottery ticket in the 2024 draft.
PLUS
You spread the cost of a first round pick over two years.
A pick next year is usually worth one round's less value. The 28th pick in this year's draft values at 660 points but the 56th pick is only worth 300 points so you'd have to give your 2024 first and still owe me 330 points. That's a second and fifth round pick this year in addition to the 2024 first. I'm not willing to bet that you will be bad next year. You would be chewing nails if you'd made that trade with Seattle, Giants, or Jets last year.
Here's what the Saints gave up for the first round picks and it's a boatload.
"The Eagles dealt the 16th and 19th overall picks plus a sixth-rounder to the Saints in return for the 18th overall pick, selections in the third and seventh rounds, New Orleans’ 2023 first-round pick and a 2024 second-rounder. The hefty trade leaves the Saints with two picks in the middle of the first round instead of one".
The Eagles obviously had 3 first rounders (that they turned into Jordan Davis, A.J. Brown, and a 2024 first rounder) and not 2, like Seattle, but I think the model works!
Personally if Seattle gets an amazing offer sure defer one pick to 2024. Otherwise we have an open window right now let alone what could happen if we hit on 3 to 4 picks and 1 or 2 free agents. In general try to unearth and build for a 2023 run. Two playoff games would go a long way for 2023, just as it did in 2012.
I think you're dead on, Chris. On something like that, one can only be flexible and see what offers come our way. A pick now is worth more than a pick later if it's at the same spot in the draft and 2023 could be huge if we do well in the draft again. But if we got great value for swapping picks, I'd be open.
The 2 best young QBs in the NFL weren’t stars. Allen wasn’t even great. So, maybe not. If the team seems something there, and can have the luxury of giving 1-2 redshirt years (as the Seahawks if we extend Geno, as did the Giants with Eli and Dan — didn’t work out, but process was okay, he turned out better than Haskins — and the Chiefs with Smith and Mahomes), go for it.
Another thing: genetics is really important in sport. Manning, Bosa, Watt, Metcalf, Diggs, all those are families that have more than one great name in the NFL. Maybe the great season by Tua is pumping his brother’s stock by proxy. I’d bet kaikaina gets drafted relatively early.
I've written extensively about Josh Allen's college history and why he was a first round pick in the past, so I'm not going to do it again. But Josh Allen simply can't be the comp for literally every big quarterback prospect with a big arm who sucks.
Sure, I'm not saying that. I'm just saying that sometimes the production doesn't scream elite, but the team sees something more. There's only one Josh Allen, and only one Mahomes. But some reasonings are useful.
Murray was first overall because Russell Wilson turned out to be pretty good at 5'10". Russ only got drafted because Drew Brees was there before, and those are the reasons why Bryce Young gets top of the first consideration. They are similar in height, even though they are completely different players.
I don't watch college but I assume Levis and Richardson have traits but not the results that Allen has shown. My point is that, sometimes, you bet on traits and it turns out great (have you heard about a guy named Tariq Woolen?).

Grayson McCall in Round 4 would be awesome and pure value. I am in.

I'll take the blame for using the word "star."

All good points. Though with regard to Woolen, it's much easier to bet on traits with a 5th round pick than a 1rst.
The reason Allen was down graded by the draft gurus was ( heaven forbid) the poor slob played for Wyoming)
