I could see a DT instead of a DE in round 1. Possibly a DT upgrade from that draft position might more if a difference maker than a DE selection. But then, I love me some dominant interior defensive line play.
My first thought was that they build the DT position with cheap FAs—Clinton McDonald, Tony McDaniel, Ahtyba Rubin, Al Woods etc. Then I reviewed the draft history and realized that I was wrong: Jarren Reed, Malik McDowell, Naz Jones, and Rasheed Green were each 2nd or 3rd round picks. So it’s not inconceivable that they go with a DT in R1.
If Seattle is lucky enough to make two first round picks, I say lucky because I figure we will be in contention until right near the end, it will be a Quarterback then edge rusher.
Having said that Seattle struck lightning in the bottle 3 times in 2012, in rounds 1,2 and 3. Pete and John may feel they can get there QB at 12 or 15. I honestly don't think Denver wins that many more games than us, but Russell Wilson will get them to the playoffs.
Also the use of the second first round pick, if we don't trade up should be used on the best player, unless it is a safety or punter. This could be a spot to take the best center or can't miss guard. I left out tackle on purpose because we have two good rookies with a couple of back ups. It would be great I Dee Eskridge can play well enough that he is featured every game and not just on end around. I believe Dee wants it enough and will be over the shock of that brutal concussion he got in the first game. The injury was avoidable but being a rookie he went all out to make a first down, on second down. Dee needs to play just a tiny bit more like Tyler. When there is no where to go live to play another play, unless it's for a game ending touchdown.
I think Cody Barton will play well this year, and Rattigan will comeback at some point to help. This would not stop me from taking a special cover linebacker with our first pick in round 2 or the second pick in round one.
In four or five months we will have a good idea what we need. Football happens so fast there could be a need we never thought about
The only thing that makes me wary of using a late 1st/early 2nd on a center or guard is Schneider’s track record: Besides Lewis there was Pocic, Ifedi (whatever Germain was, it wasn’t a tackle), Britt, and Moffitt.
Bridge QB strikes me a strategy only in retrospect—it’s not like the Chiefs knew that they’d draft Patrick Mahomes in 2017 when they signed Alex Smith in 2013. And, the bridge can wind up being longer than the Lake Ponchartrain Causeway: It’s arguable that the Bears’ bridge from Sid Luckman has been under construction for 74 years and counting.
My hunch—and it is just a hunch—is that the Seahawks have their eye on a specific QB in next year’s draft, and that it’s someone they think they can get. In the meantime, they can indulge their curiosity in Drew Lock and (easily) resist the temptation to acquire Jimmy Garoppolo.
I went from wanting us to take Mayfield (assuming we could get him on the cheap like Carolina did) to hoping we didn't just to spite Josina Anderson. That whole "3) they still tryin to figure out how I know/ heard" was the cherry on top. Pardon my language but what a piss poor excuse for journalism. Corbin Smith should be ashamed too. At best these people are getting their "intel" from Baker's agent, at worst, they're making it up out of whole cloth since it's likely enough to happen that they look smart.
NFL “journalists” are so used to having everything spoon-fed to them that they have thrown out the basics of their profession. To be fair, there’s also a voracious 24/7 appetite for NFL gossip and an environment that prizes shooting from the hip.
This is one reason why I respect Michael-Shawn Dugar. He’s willing to dig and learn and cultivate actual sources. Mike is still growing, but that’s good thing too.
Yeah, I just wish he'd have posted more than an article a week or so at the Athletic. I wanted to support him and did for a couple of years, but there was just SO little content and I'm not big into other sports. I did see that he ran a sub 4.5 40 at NFL media day which is darn impressive.
lol, Chuck, I hear ya. When you don't follow much else in the sports world it's lean this time of year, for sure.
I had a lot of confidence dissin' the Mayfield talk because I believe Pete is true to his word philosophically (maybe not always competitively as he might use misdirection to throw other coaches off--I don't know). He has said he's doing a certain thing, and he's stayed true to it this off season so far.
I've commented on Mayfield's interview because he said 'Seattle' like he could just join the team and be the QB. I think Pete probably heard that and his blood boiled as he DOES believe in competition, and may have his dream situation right now where it could be a coin flip at the very end between Smith or Lock.
AND, I think he probably wants Lock to win out so that he has a chance to win the trade as well.
I understand the off season negative vibe because there aren't a bunch of top line pro bowlers or marketable guys, but I think Pete's right where he wants to be that EVERYONE in all aspects of the game have to be on their championship opportunity for them to compete and win.
Gotta give the guy credit for sticking to his guns, and I'm very excited for camp to start and see how it plays out.
I have the most mixed feelings on Pete Carroll, man. I love his positivity and how his teams always have fight in them. But I have hated so many personnel moves over the last several years. And I've listened to him enough to not believe much of anything he says outside of his core philosophy. But I get it. He's running a multi billion dollar organization and has to say the right things at all times to the press, not show his hand, etc. He is at least respectful to media, unlike many coaches. There's not a doubt in my mind that his "Second chances" media appearance was bracing us for Deshaun Watson, which would have sealed the deal for me and any affection that I have left for Pete.
I think very little of Geno Smith and wish we hadn't even re-signed him after his DUI. Especially at a big pay raise like we did. He's a bad quarterback, in spite of a nice game vs Jacksonville. I was warmer on Lock before Kenneth mentioned his string of games to end last season and I sought out most of them. After watching him, my belief is that he's also bad. Mayfield is mediocre, which is a big upgrade from bad. Jimmy G is a slight step down, but I'd wager he goes to the Browns. The Eagles aren't letting Minshew go anywhere. So we're stuck with two bums and I expect better from this organization. I'm disappointed that a coach whose mantra is "always compete" is starting a season with 2 QBs not in the top 32 competing for the starting spot. I suspect we'll be bad and uninteresting this year. I hope I'm wrong.
Mike Dugar makes the point that Carroll does the hardest things right, like building and sustaining a winning culture. My take is that most of the objections to Pete are tactical—he punts too much on 4th down, he doesn’t use time-outs correctly etc. I wonder if fans in other cities feel any differently about the coach of their team.
I’m not put out by the QB situation because I think that they’ll draft someone they like next year and because I don’t think that mediocrity does any good. It would be different if this was year 5+ of bad QBs, but as it is not, I’m willing to give Pete the benefit of the doubt.
I agree that Pete's ultra-conservative play calls and horrible clock management drive people nuts, and I'm in the same boat. But for me, it's mostly the high dollar signings of mediocre players. And a lot of that could be on Schneider; we'll probably never know.
"Better yet, will I ever be able to convince the masses that you don’t need to draft the FIRST quarterback in any given class in order to draft the BEST quarterback in that class." With all of the potential very good to excellent QBs wondering if the Seahawks might actually trade back (not too far) and add an additional 2nd 'n 3rd rounder while still being able to get superb Grayson.
If they actually trade back to take Grayson McCall it will finally prove beyond any doubt that John Schneider is definitely a member of the Seaside Joe community. I bet he even pays for his premium membership. I think that makes you part of the Seahawks professional scouting staff Kenneth!
I've seen several tweets where people are trying to keep the QB theme going for the Seahawks. Minshew is one name I've seen pop up. They don't appear to be getting any traction, thank goodness!
Yeah, Gardner Minshew is not even on the trade block. He's the Eagles BACKUP QB! They didn't draft Carson Strong to backup Jalen Hurts this year. So any Minshew talk would ignore how important he is to the Eagles right now and he'd only be QB3 in Seattle until an injury or a release happens.
Seaside, do I have the right of it here:
R1: QB/DE (both)
R2: WR/C/G/DT (two of)
R3: ILB/whatever not taken in R2 (one of)
R4: CB/TE/whatever not taken in R2-3 (one of)
What about RB? They could very well be going into the draft with only Walker under contract.
I could see a DT instead of a DE in round 1. Possibly a DT upgrade from that draft position might more if a difference maker than a DE selection. But then, I love me some dominant interior defensive line play.

...more OF a difference maker...
Can't help but wonder who the QB will be when the Hawks go 2 and 5 to start the season. It won't be Drew and Gino.
If Seattle is lucky enough to make two first round picks, I say lucky because I figure we will be in contention until right near the end, it will be a Quarterback then edge rusher.

Fair comments. I'm in watch-n-see mode with Pete this year.
I thought Lock was very good against the Chiefs in the last game. He was driving them for the W when the RB fumbled on like the 20.
We'll see.
I'm not for Geno at all. At all. I would have quit watching had they signed Watson.

The obsession to get rumors to explode is right in line with scammer and trolls.
