Fant is not worth the money, Woolen won't tackle or turn his head to see the ball, Mafe doesn't always finish or deploy counter moves fast enough, Lucas health and system fit, Walker health and system fit...to me that leaves Bryant (imo) as the top target until this year plays out and we see new evidence come in. We got good problems...finally.
So I hope the Hawks don’t extend Lucas before he gets a few games under his belt this season. When healthy, he’s a really good RT. But with the wide zone blocking scheme, linemen need to really be able to run laterally. He’s not saying his knee is 100%, and I worry if the knee issue will hamper his ability be able to really fire off and run. I hope he can because he’s plenty talented.
He's also not saying the knee is still injured. He said no one is ever really 100%, which I'm not sure we should interpret to mean he is having any problems with the knee.
I’m not saying it’s injured. My concern is that the wide zone blocking scheme may ask for more than his self-admitted less than 100% knee can take. Maybe it can and I hope so. But I personally don’t want to see him signed to a long term extension until the team knows it can.
I guess it depends on the nature of the injury. I believe it was reported as being patella related (possibly Jumper's Knee?), though I'm not sure how much of that was speculation.
I'm wondering who a MoneyBall accountant would recommend? What difference would their equations suffer if we incorporate Tight Ends and Fullbacks together? As our WRs find real skills at blocking (Bobo), what differentiates them from being tagged as such? Are there contract restrictions affecting MM's vision in structuring his diversity ideas?
Idk if combining FB & TE adds any salary benefit at all. Most teams dont pay a FB, so if you combine it with TE, it is a break-even with those that dont use a FB. If you DON'T combine FB & TE (pay a stand alone FB), then you are taking on extra salary.
Of course, this only applies when the baseline comparison is "minimum salaray requirements of other NFL teams" and not "minimum salary requirement for this system's roster needs" (which requires a FB).
An interesting question to consider regarding these guys is, who is most likely to exceed the value of their next contract? For the sake of argument, let's assume they all have healthy seasons and next contract values within the ranges laid out by Kenneth in the article. I would rank them in order of the greatest likelihood to outperform their next deal to least likely to show us anything new as: Abe, Riq, Coby, Ken, Mafe, and Fant.
I find you pointing out that Noah Fant's Dad might read SSJ very interesting. I have long hated the fans who will tag players on Twitter/X to criticize them. Some of the heat Jamal Adams in particular got was beyond comprehension. I mean, the guy didn't take a hammer to his own quad -and I'm pretty sure he was way more upset about it than those talking smack were. But it all makes me look more carefully at my own words and think before I type some knee jerk reaction about (oh, I don't know) resigning Woolen or something. It's fine to be a fan and having strong opinions goes along with that. It's still good to remember that there are sometimes more people reading our words than you and the SSJ gang, and some of them might have a close connection to the players we praise or criticize.
I think I gave them all a 3 with the exception of Fant, who got a 2. I don't see how you can extend Lucas without at least 1 year w/o a problem with his knee under his belt. Mafe has long periods where he can't get home so I don't know what to think about him. I guess I want to see a full season from him. K9 is electric at times but struggles to stay on the field. Personally I think Woolen would be the guy I'd extend... he's talented, has proven he belongs and I think whatever the reason he's been benched is probably already solved. Would he still be here if JS and MM didn't think so? I like what I've seen recently from Coby and if he keeps it up then sure, extend him. I don't know if Fant is the problem or if it's the scheme but unless he blows the doors off this season there's no reason to pay him.
The Fant dad comment literally made me lol. Seriously. I usually do not criticize anyone's fandom because everyone is entitled to theirs, but you must be a relative or a friend to give Fant a 4 or 5. Or you misunderstood the question.
Thank you, SJ, for marking what I voted because I had forgotten a couple. I Abe Lucas at 4 just because of the injury unknown. If he plays most of the season and is healthy at the end, he would be a 5++.Even if he is hurt but it is something besides the knee.
Lastly because it doesn't get said enough thank you SJ for all your work.
Dept Q after a slow start was fantastic and I'm really looking forward to a second season. Happy to be one of what sounds like many the recommended it. The Devils plan may be the snartest reality show on tv as well for those that actually love firing up there frontal coryex. Hawk blogger recently pulled up some great stats on Woolen and how giant of a step his run game defense improved last season. Using multiple different sites as well as ranking #7 cb in run D on the havoc meter. He went from a PFF 37 grade to 76 in run D last year. I know there's a big split with fans on Woolen but I'm deathly afraid of not extending him now more than anyone because if he does what hes capable of he could be the #1 CB in the NFL with our safety group doing there job. I don't see anyone else on our current roster capable of being the #1 at there position. Possibly Walker with a great line.
Gonna watch Dept Q ASAP. it was on my list before the community's Recommendation. I want to reiterate that The Residence was entertaining, medium-light subject matter, and didnt require a lot of time investment. 8 episodes of 1hr each.
That's the thing with free agency. You have to pick your priorities, and potentially watch good players leave. Look at how many players the Eagles let go this spring. Can't pay 'em all. It's not that I wouldn't like Woolen to stay with the team, it's that I fear his market will be higher than we can match to keep him, and risk not having the cap room for higher priorities. I'm paying Spoon when the time comes, and I don't think JS/MM will want a high percentage of cap going to one position, like we had at the safety position previously......to the detriment of other spots.
So my prediction is that Woolen walks, and gets his bag elsewhere. And all power to him if that's the way it goes.
When I watch other reality shows like Survivor I can tell myself that I would be good at it and win. But with Devil’s Plan I know “ah okay a show I can’t play!” Easier to just observe and admire
Alone is that show for me. I know I would starve and tap out within 3 days. Mrs Turtleman thinks I'm some kind of wilderness expert because I hunt and fish but I have no illusions I would last. I have joked with her that I could have my truck and load it up with propane heaters, a rifle and ammo, fishing gear, boxes of MREs, drinking water, fire starters, power tools and a chainsaw and I'd still probably be the first man out.
I just finished season one of the Devil's Plan and had similar thoughts. Even amongst the contestants you could tell after a few episodes that there were really only 3 or 4 players that might win.

Bonus points to SSJ for the good title... again!
I had to think on it for a second, but I got there eventually.
i, too, am a fan of the punny titles!

Why is Fant even on this list? He is barely adequate. I don't like 8 mill TEs who avoid contact. I like TEs who like to run very DBs!

Thnx, Shay. Details, details...

I’m not ready to extend any of them. But if I had to do one it would be Woolen hands down.

Knowing how much you like Survivor, if you haven't seen Lost on Netflix (or didn't when it was on network TV), it stands to reason you'd enjoy it.

Good catch, Jake. Thanks.
"Cry 'Havoc!' and let slip the dogs of war"
Go get 'em, Mr. Woolen.
