Who are the greater oddities, Newf’s or Novies?

Defjames's avatar

The Pineiro “slide tackle” mad me think of that time the rams punter (Johnny Hecker?) cheap shotted Cliff Avril and then literally sat down by the ref when Bennett came after him, lol. Apparently he later apologized and donated to Cliff’s charity.

I’ve never done anything non-nefarious in my life!

The Whiners going for it on 4th down reminded me of the Detroit game with Philly where Detroit went for it on 4th down 5 times and made none of them. Basically 5 turnovers. Lost the game 9 to 16.

The defence doesn’t need to embarrass you, pull your pants down, push you over, take your lunch money, and humiliate you. But they will because it’s fun and it gets the job done.

Shoutout to Khammarling.

I love this comment. The visual of pulling the pants down etc. It gets the point across beautifully but with language that my mom would be very ok with. Very pg-13ish. Not sure I would have that restraint.

I hate to be the skunk at the picnic, but after what happened to the Bills, I worry much more about the Refs than the Lambs!

This is the 4th article about the San Francisco win. Great analysis but when do we get some Rams analysis?

The thrill of seeing your comment get quoted only to realize your name was misspelled. :-(

Dragon Slayers.

“Sam can’t win big games.”

“JSN isn’t a #1.”

“Can’t win without Geno and DK.”

“Walker can’t run between the tackles.”

“The O-line sucks.”

“HoF’r Anthony Bradford.”

“Kupp is too old.”

“D-Law is washed up.”

“Murphy disappointed as a rookie.”

“Nwosu is always injured.”

“Drake Thomas?”

“Ty Okada?”

“Trade Riq.”

And on and on.

Dragon Slayers.

“Can’t beat Shanahan.” [Check.]

“Can’t beat McVay.”

“Should’ve handed the ball to Marshawn.”

Some big dragons left to slay…

Beautiful comment! So, so many lines that everyone repeats just out of convenience that simply aren't true. Even the last one; though it's considered conventional wisdom. And I almost wish we had, simply because we would have lost in a fashion that might not have fractured the team and started a dumb narrative that many smart people parrot. Unfortunately AJ Barner was just 10 years old then, so I feel near-certain we weren't going to make it into the end zone against that goal line front. I do think the particular play call was terrible, but passing in that situation was not. And I've been trying to explain it to people who won't have it for 13 years.

Charlie Gage's avatar

I have to disagree, respectively of course, but I don't think that Marshawn would have been stopped. The previous run by him showed that his determination was beyond belief. Like that run against the Saints that got his name coined as "Beast Mode", he was unstoppable when he had that kind of determination. Only need a half a yard for the TD and four downs to get it. Russ changed the play call in the huddle for whatever reason. The player who intercepted the pass had been a Seahawk and immediately recognized the play that Russ called by the way they lined up. He was ready for that pass play, jumped the route and saved the game for the Pats. There should have been pass interference called but the refs decided not to call it. I will be forever pissed about that, as I am about the 2005 Super Bowl.

Sea Hawk Run!'s avatar

Had the pass gone incomplete, we would have seen that run attempt, possibly two attempts.

Worst possible result.

Chuck Turtleman's avatar

I realize that most people see that play the way that you do. I just tend to think that people remember Marshawn as a better goal line back than he was. And that the 2014 Seahawks were a better goal line rushing team than we were. Marshawn was 1 of 6 from the one-yard line that year. On 2 key one yard to go run attempts that game, the Pats stuffed him. And they brought in extra linemen thinking we were going to attempt just that. But what I find most key is that if he runs and doesn't get in, we have no timeouts to draw up our (now) final play before the clock ran out. Obviously, we'll never know. And even more obviously what they *did* try didn't work.

I finally wrote a Substack on just this subject. I won't link it out of respect to SSJ, and it's not even as in-depth as I would have liked to have gotten. But in between customers at work on a busy morning, I think I hit the key points like time and timeouts left, Patriots stopping Marshawn on 3rd and short both prior attempts, and the Patriots success against the run in goal-line formation.

Sea Hawk Run!'s avatar

They weren’t going to get enough push on Browner. Russ should have seen the safety crashing down and tried to run it in or thrown it away.

But yeah, a pass was not a bad call if it’s a TD, incomplete, or an effective scramble.

So yeah, slay that dragon!

Ray's avatar

I always wished it had been a run/pass option to the left side

Chip Mac's avatar

Thanks SSJ for the fun read and great clips, well done! The game atmosphere was nuts Saturday and will be even greater on Sunday. I can’t help but feel like it’s 2013 all over again and all though the tip was right in front of me, I would rather have a beat down of the Rams and Darnold no, Lock taking a knee. Go Hawks!

Samuel Garfield's avatar

> you’re running away from Trent Williams with the ball in the hands of your fullback instead of McCaffrey?

tbf that's exactly how misdirection is supposed to work 😀

zezinhom400's avatar

Yes. It was just misdirected 😆

KHammarling's avatar

If any Seasiders want to meet for entirely nefarious reasons, i'm down! Maybe we can go install an electrical substation in a certain LA & Phoenix suburb? Open to suggestions.

Chuck Turtleman's avatar

Haha, not sure it will be necessary in Phoenix as long as Bidwill owns that team, but I'm down to do it anyway. Imagine being a qualified head coaching candidate and considering your options. A) having to work for that bozo and going up against the other 3 masterminds in this division in your division or B) anywhere else.

John A Irvine's avatar

I was telling my brother this very thing yesterday. I essentially said that you would have to be a little egotistical to take the Cards job or the Raiders job. Because in both divisions you have 3 really good coaches and some good qbs. At least with the Raiders you have the first pick. With the Cards you have an obtrusive owner a highly over paid qb and not a lot of talent.

Shaymus McFamous's avatar

There are quite a few things that I would do for millions of dollars, all ego aside. And, coaching the Cards is definitely one of them. I'd do my best, too!

Rozone's avatar

A bit OT: the 49ers kicker tried to trip Shaheed on his kickoff return TD. The video hasn't been shared widely, but here it is...clearest view is at the end of the clip.

IdahoFred's avatar

He got a penalty for tripping.

Rozone's avatar

Thanks, I didn't hear that during the game.

IdahoFred's avatar

I'm sure it's not like TV where there is a clear picture of the ref pointing out the penalty.

Rozone's avatar

I did watch the game and that fabulous kickoff return. The penalty completely escaped me.

Charley Filipek's avatar

Yeah, dangerous play. Player should be tossed out of this game.

"I know there are a couple of us in Nova Scotia. If the Hawks reach the SB is there any interest in a SB party in the province?"

What part of the province are you located Bryant? I'm about an hour northwest of Halifax.

Shanahan now needs to find another DC with Salah departing (again). We'll just add that to the pile of things he needs to figure out, along with the 'how do I beat Mike Macdonald?' problem. 49'ers misery. Love it. I really hope that Kubiak doesn't get a head coaching gig. His options are dwindling, and if we get to the Super Bowl I'm not sure how many teams will have the patience to wait. I still think it's highly possible that, even though a lot of people were interested in talking to him, that he stays in Seattle. And honestly, he really should hone his skills working with Macdonald for at least another year. He's not the most charismatic guy either, and with owners that matters.

Double FTR's.

Charlie Gage's avatar

Seems like firing head coaches is almost a fad this year. Then owners turn around and hire coaches that got fired for the same reason they fired their HC. Suspect logic, IMHO.

Charlie Gage's avatar

Or even triple FTRs.

Bob Johnston's avatar

"His options are dwindling."

Yeah, I think he's down to seven openings right now.

zezinhom400's avatar

That would be a funky blast. Maybe we could take over the Pint Public House? Never been, but have heard it's cool..

Chris H's avatar

It is a cool spot, although admittedly I haven't been for a very long time. I need to get out more.

zezinhom400's avatar

Well, let's see how Sunday goes and then we can actually take this to the next level!

Unless Danno is calling it for Seattle, in which case we can already go ahead and buy the plane tickets now.

Barry R Carlson's avatar

We should all go to Nova Scotia!

Go Hawks!

Chris H's avatar

There is a surprising number of Seahawk fans here. Certainly not the predominant fan favorite, but more than you'd expect. I used to be a rarity, but so much any more.

huevobueno's avatar

"Yo! Adrian!" Hope you have the same confidence in the Seahawks this week as you did last week. Would love to see a repeat performance against the butt-heads (best derogatory nick-name for the Rams I could come-up with on the fly).
