Great piece, but you made a massive faux pas by not — correctly — identifying the ATL/LAR game as "0-1 Falcons at 0-1 Rams". How dare you :)

Great in depth on Geno. I looked at 4 highlights over the years Jet's vs Atlanta, Giants vs Raiders, Rams vs Seahawks, Jacksonville vs Seahawks. Geno looked pretty good in those games too. His reads were good and throws above average. He also did a good job under a lot of pressure in the Rams game. The int he threw Lockett was knocked down (should have been illegal contact) and probably would have had the completion. Geno showed great chemistry with Locket and Metcalf and with his TE's in all the highlights.

I tend to think Geno got pigeonholed early in his career and that was his identity from then on (thanks Stephen). Honestly, I bought into the press. What's the old saying "Contempt prior to investigation is the surest sign of ignorance." Guilty as charged.

I believe Geno is not only taking this year as his opportunity to be a starter in the NFL one last time. He may well be looking to keep the job in 23, even if a QB is drafted.

This week at SF will be another test, but I for one am becoming more curious about Geno each week. If Geno can get some help from the defense, the game in SF can be a win. I read a critique on Field Gulls that wasn't very promising with matchups against the 49ers. Then again that's why they play the game. Take the 8.5 and the Hawks (easy money). I still like Pete's Mojo over the niners.

Seeing the way we have owned the 9ers in the last decade and I believe we have the better quarterback, running backs, top receivers, and tight ends if Kettle doesn’t play I think we will beat them, perhaps badly.

You want to talk about the rest of the season when the rest of the season comes. I want to talk about Seattle beating San Francisco in San Francisco after Seattle beats San Francisco in San Francisco. Until then, none of this means anything. I also happen to think our chances of emerging with a win are vanishingly small. But then what do I know? I was shocked when Geno came out throwing darts and moving the team down the field.

I'm old (well, older than Ken), so I am somewhat senile, but I nailed the losing season AND the two 8-8 seasons (under three different coaches--Tom Flores 1994 for the 6-10, and Chuck Knox 1985 and Dennis Erickson 1998 for the 8-8s). I'd forgotten Flores's team even started that well. Fun fact: the 1985 team won two, then lost two, all season. My teenaged self thought they were going to the Super Bowl at the start of that year.

And folks, for those of you under 30, you've seen nothing but the golden age of Seahawks football, with only a brief season or two here and there with Patera and Knox to compare in excitement, if not in quality. Treasure it.

Remember the Dennis Erickson Era? The best part about it was that there was no waiting list for season tickets.

Don't know why folks that watched both teams last week expect the 49er's to win...by 9.5 points !!!???

I expect our defense to eat Trey on a tray and an efficient General Geno to loose the many offensive weapons he has upon his division adversaries. I expect the Hawks to win...I think they are the better team.

Their defense is better than ours by a stretch. But agree on the difference between the two QBs - Geno is better than Lance right now and might always be, has a better line protecting him and better RBs (as the Niners will lean on Deebo to do everything). I think we cover the spread easily and probably win as Pete owns Kyle, but I’m a complete homer.

Johnny, with Mitchell hurt, did we know their RBs are better?

And even the line. Williams is a beast. He's supposedly hurt right now. Are they better?

We'll see.

Hawks homers unite

I meant that Geno has the better line protecting him and the better RBs. Plus they might be missing Kittle - if that’s the case then their offense looks really hamstrung.

Nice!!!

But, eh...

Okay, gonna just agree here...lol

Yes, going into primetime games against Denver and LAR, I'm guessing it would really call the direction into question.

Stopping the 9ers run attack is key. Wagner has been good at that, a but reason we were successful against them.

I see KWIII going off. Maybe I've been hanging around the seaside drinking the Joe a bit too much, but I'm seeing yardage on the ground and through the air.

Go Ken Go.

It would be great to hurt the 9ers year, but it's going to be tough on the road.

One of The Athletic podcasts mentioned that Seattle had scouts at the Kentucky Florida game. It’s to be expected of course but just thought I would mention it.

I am expecting another close game with the win going to the team that does a better job protecting the football.

The Seahawks can win this game! If Penny and Walker get loose it will make things much easier.

and Homer, and maybe they will even let DeeJay Dallas have a few .. and then there are our talented tight ends ... have even seen the WRs run the ball now and again ... exciting to see what the coaches cook up to startle the Niners

49ers have a very good Defense, in the box and the secondary. With new rookies playing on the Seahawks OL, they are going to need a good run game to open the passing game for Geno to beat the 49er defense. I believe Geno has better scrambling skills compared to Russ, which Geno will have to use, to avoid the 49er pass rushers. The Seahawk Defense will miss Adams playing in the box to put extra pressure on the 49er rookie QB. Should be a rockem-sockem game. Go Seahawks !!

And by the way, I want one of those KW3 dark blue practice jerseys BADLY!

I no longer gamble but I do like to keep my eyes on lines to see where the public's head is. Line has moved from -7 at opening to -8.5 yesterday to -9.5 today so people are putting their money on the 49ers. This surprises me after each team's performance last week. I don't *expect* to win on the road in Santa Clara, but it wouldn't shock me and I certainly wouldn't be surprised by a single digit loss.

My hopes for this game are to come out of it with no major injuries, better tackling, and for Kenneth Walker to do Kenneth Walker things all day. And if the last one happens, I have a feeling I'll wish I still gambled!

If I was a gambler, I'd see that as a clear opportunity to get a good bet down.

The temptation is real. But when you have a "come to Jesus" moment when you have to swear something off, it's usually best avoid dabbling back in it. And there's no such thing as a sure thing in sports. Those big casinos in Vegas aren't built with charity money. They may lose some, but the house always wins in the end. Gamble responsibly. Or at least don't be like 28 year old me and do it so irresponsibly that you have to borrow $ from your mom to keep your health intact and have to swear to never gamble again.

That's odd because I read just the opposite. I thought the niners opened as 10 point favorites and dropped to 8.5 as of yesterday, reflecting people backing the Hawks to cover the spread. Go Hawks!!!

Expand full comment

Bookmakers can vary, but -8.5 is most of what I saw when the lines came out (here's -8.5 opening at Draftkings https://dknation.draftkings.com/2022/9/11/23319142/seahawks-vs-49ers-odds-week-2-nfl-predictions-early-picks-opening-point-spreads-total-moneyline). I'm seeing anywhere from -8.5 to -9.5 currently, but with -120 juice on the lower number. Which is another trick the bookmakers use; keep the number the same but make the vig higher rather than move the line.

Though I just recalled that there are "early lines" (that you usually can't bet on yet but get released these days), sometimes long before the season even starts. At any rate, we opened as a solid dog, and the number reflects action on SF for the most part from what I've seen.

One of my old gambling "tricks" was to look at each game before I'd seen any numbers and guess the line. It worked out better than seeing the line first and then reacting to it. If I were laying odds on this game, I think I'd have gone SF -4, maybe -5.5 at most after seeing each team's game 1. But Vegas isn't predicting the actual winner and by how much with these; it's entirely what they think that the public will put even money on each side of.

P.S.

Why isn't there a show on one of the networks called FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS that features some of the best High School football featuring some of the best talent in the country? It seems like a no brainer to me, and would further interest in all football, but would help satiate my appetite for any good football. Every day of the week.

You need to be in charge of a network! That would be must watch TV for me. And I bet a ton of other people, whether they played HS ball or not. I watched that awful "Football Tykes" show or whatever it was called where they had these pee wee teams playing with dead serious coaches and crazy complicated plays, and it blew my mind. It was about as opposite of my Pop Warner playing days as could even be scripted. Threeyearletterman type stuff. But the most talented teenagers in the country? I'd be almost excited about that as college ball.

If we can run the ball successfully or Geno can hit many quick passes that could lead to victory. The most likely winning scenario would be Seattle holding the Niners rushing attack to a dull roar. We all know what that implies.

I never expected Seattle to earn the number one pick, would they like to draft Bryce Young of course. I think there will be a number of quarterbacks that can play Pete ball. How deep that list is even the J and P don't know that yet.

The best thing about Seaside Joe is that he watches tape and isn't afraid to offer an unpopular opinion if his research brings him to that conclusion. Apparently, the same could be said for Chuck Modiano, the author of of this fine article. Seaside Joe seems to be right more often than he is wrong and I sincerely hope Mr. Modiano is also, or at least right this particular time.

One more reason to love Pete Carroll. GE-NO, GE-NO!!

Interesting to read this as a Seahawks fan who has only even known Geno as a backup QB. I think it highlights what we've come to know of Geno as a good leader and teammate, and an accurate low-risk pocket passer with decent scrambling ability. My main concern with Geno as a starter is that he seems limited to mostly short high-percentage throws. This could be blamed on Waldron and Pete for their play calling, but if he's capable of being more dynamic, why wouldn't they call the same game plan for him that they do for Russell or Lock? I don't think it's a conspiracy. I think they know what his strengths and weaknesses are as a QB and tailor the offense to fit. He's a really good backup QB. I would want him in my locker room and would send him into a game when needed with confidence. But, I'd still be searching for the QB of the future that can expand the playbook to keep opposing defenses guessing.

I think he’s limited to high percentage throws because that is exactly what your HC/OC expects you to do to stay on schedule. For far too long Wilson would just improvise and, whilst it provided rollercoaster entertainment, when your whirligig routine doesn’t work anymore you are stuffed. Geno might not have a cannon for an arm but in the short to intermediate range he is clinical. I have no doubt he can find a WR with the long ball when circumstances (i.e. there is actual separation) mean that that is the right throw to make - rather than eschew everything underneath and throw up a (often under-thrown) bomb hoping the WR can go contest the catch/come back and get a DPI call (that shit is getting old. The NFL need to look at that badly).

Thanks for sharing, that’s an important read.

That was a great article, it sure validates Geno. In truth what we should be looking at is weather Shane Waldron is calling a good game, because it does seem Geno can be a winning quarterback. Best case scenario, to me was Seattle found Drew Lock's untapped potential, no race bias but an age bias. Rather stupid for me to think that considering i was playing top flight rugby at the same age. A 31 year old quarterback isn't old. I was so proud of Geno twice when he ran over defenders, if he needs to great, but slide otherwise. Geno did say some very self aware things in his presser this week. One really stood out, on both sacs he said he should have moved up and also that he is going to be careful about not getting to deep so the rush end doesn't get such a good angel. This could be a great more than heart warming story. I for one am keeping my fingers crossed. Thanks for this . Ps sorry I ignored this but will address this. The racism is something that I never took into account, all I thought was Geno backed up Manning, Rivers and Wilson 3 above average QBs. I guess the point is he maybe should have been playing somewhere else. In my mind that wouldn't be an issue, but I am a naive Canadian.
