The Seahawks are still breathing, but Ryan Grubb may need “CPR”…Chicago Performance Resuscitation.
Seattle could have defeated the Bears on Thursday if they had only scored 4 points, but they went ahead and scored 6 anyway to rub it in their faces. A 6-3 victory over the Bears is the worst that any team has done against Chicago this season in a game they still won, and not many have lost to the Bears.
The Seahawks are 9-7, guaranteed themselves a winning record for the third year in a row, and will have a shot at the division title if the Rams lose to the Cardinals. However, these offensive numbers for Seattle, combined with the world’s extremely low expectations for Chicago’s offense against any defense, put the win perspective:
6 points: Fewest against Bears this season
12 first downs: Fewest against Bears this season
143 net passing yards: 3rd-fewest against Bears this season
265 total yards: 2nd-fewest against Bears this season
Support for Grubb has been waning in the last two months, not just because of imbalance and the lack of a running game, but especially because the Seahawks have been one of the lowest-scoring teams since their eighth game of the season (19.8 points per game going into Thursday, a number that has now dropped to 18.3 PPG). Nobody would care if the Seahawks were 32nd in rushing, if they were also first in scoring.
That hasn’t been the case and Thursday’s win over the Bears is the new Exhibit A for anyone who wants to make the argument to fire Ryan Grubb.
As far as the playoffs go and whether or not Seattle could still win the division if the Rams beat the Cardinals on Saturday, this is probably the picture you need to see:
