I do not even want to contemplate what the Seahawks would be like had they fired Pete and kept Russ! That is/was a nightmare scenario. Russ' performance is not surprising and it has less to do (I think) with a slow season start as it has with Russ' gradual but inevitable decline in one of his best attributes--his legs.

Russ' "escapability" was what made him special when he broke into the league. Yes he was sacked a lot, but he avoided sacks and made Incredible Impossible DIDYOUSEETHAT plays more often than anyone ever has. But there is no question he has lost a step--it is inevitable even without a hammy injury. Seeing Russ make the mistakes (and get sacked often) on 3rd down last night was SO reminiscent of last year. Russ' last few games last year were very much aided by Penny taking off as a feature RB. He was always at his best with a good RB that made the play--action hold LBs while the receivers got open. He doesn't have that now, and neither does he have the legs to get himself out of trouble and buy time.

So. Good on Pete/John for pulling the trigger on that deal! We are in the best of all possible future Seahawks' timelines and I, for one, am fully prepared to enjoy it!

I think enough has been said by Pete John and Jody to assume that the decision to trade Russ was very thoughtful, and may well have included a risk/reward analysis on 34-38 yr old Russell Wilson.

And then Pete after the Denver game said they shaded him left given they know his “tendencies” (code for weak spots)

The frustration of Denver fans repeatedly watching Russ not seeing wide open players 10 yards deep in the middle of the field was another “tendency” Pete knew about.

And after 8 years of never having missed a snap, he’s suddenly hurt several times.

In other words, although I think Russ is absolutely capable of ripping off a series of games like his 10-10 start on Thursday, Pete and John and Jody may have known now is max value for Russ. Maybe not that the fall would be so sudden, but that 3-4 yrs from now he’d be substantially worse than today.
