The financial side of things kind of confuses me at the best of times. Cap hits, void years, that sort of thing, but how are you going to bring $45M down to single digits without extending his contract out about 50 years?
Round numbers: Darnold has $35M in base salary left on his contract for 2027, but it's not guaranteed. When JS extends him, part of the incentive for Darnold to accept is converting that non-guaranteed salary into a guaranteed signing bonus. The new contract will add a couple of new years, and will also include several void years. The only thing you can do with a void year is prorate the contract's signing bonus. So, with five additional void years added to Darnold's contract, that shiny new $35M guaranteed signing bonus will get paid upfront, but be spread out as $5M/yr across seven years (2 new contract years + 5 void years) on the team's salary cap.
I'm skipping the new contract money (+$40M/yr?) because that will be a separate magic trick. This is just to show how the extension/voids will reduce the $35M cap hit into a much smaller cap number. (And props to Danno for the lesson he gave me on void years)

I think he's saying by extending we are able to push cap into the future. It's still gonna come due but we can spread it over more years.
