Beyond the usual quality content, you might get me to start Mad Men all over again. Remember when Jai Lai was gonna pop off? And instead we get like the XFL...

Tom Brady needs 2 hands to wear all his rings. The formula they discovered began when Tom identified when too much was too much. Then he DID something about it. No wonder he is a team powner now. My bet is JS has perfected what Tom started. It's been THE topic for the up and coming "retired" guys. Keep the Crew together by showing them how and why they will get paid what they get. The Upside is a long career making damn good money, staying as healthy as one can expect in THE roughest sport in the World.

True although not a good start for Brady in LV.

Interesting that Kenneth Walker isn't a topic of discussion. I've posted before that I'm generally not a fan of extending second contracts to RBs, so there's that. I'm also a little perplexed by his usage this year. My present hunch is that they're trying to keep him healthy for the whole season precisely because they do see him as a difference maker -- and, crucially, don't have anybody in reserve who can do what he does. Ordinarily this is the point at which I'd start looking at RBs in next year's draft, because they're usually plentiful. This year, not so much. I realize it'll all change, but as of right now PFF (fwiw) lists THREE RBs in the top-100 (rounds 1-3, when one hopes to find difference makers). Which seems like it alters the math a bit. I've felt like this next Hawks draft would focus on D in the first three rounds, looking to add an edge, a CB, and some IOL help in whatever order the board falls. But if the RB class is thin...early days, and I dunno nothin'.

As far as this article, Walker wasn’t discussed because I wasn’t addressing pending free agents.

As far as Kenneth Walker, we’ll see what happens. I wrote about his contract I think 10 days ago.

Sure. Just a tangent I've been thinking about walking to the barn...ordinarily RB is a pretty easy position to draft/replace (like WR in this era, right?)...but this season it might not be. So how does that alter our perception of Walker's value?

Darnold is currently 13th in MVP odds (JSN is 15th) FWIW.

Baker Mayfield signed in March 2024 for essentially the same contract Darnold currently has.

The key contract to watch, I would think, is Daniel Jones. Daniel Jones and Sam Darnold have had comically similar careers. Jones is on a 1 year deal, you would think he will be resigned by the Colts, unless he completely falls apart like Darnold did last year and the Colts go a different direction like the Vikings (highly doubtful as the Vikings look like fools right now).

But I have a hard time seeing the retreads getting huge contracts. That is part of the reason to get the Baker, Geno, SD, and Danny Dimes of the world. SD was just a free agent and had little interest from the market.

Will Danny Dimes have a big FA market this offseason? Danny has better odds than SD to win MVP, FWIW. But still, I would doubt he would have a huge market.

I think the Seahawks will let this year and next playout then figure out what to do then depending on Daniel Jones' contract it would likely lay the path for SD just like Baker laid the path for his current one.

JSN though, oooooohhh boy. All bets are off here. He is young and the best player at his position. I think we will take the 5th year option and then it is either tag or record setting WR contract. And I don't see JS letting this uber talented player go.

Seahawks are in a great position! Tons of cap space ... Could even see adding some FAs or trade!

14 players higher than JSN for MVP? Can't get my head around that. I know QB's get more consideration, but the best WR in the NFL (by a mile) should be higher than 15th.

Completely agree.

JSN is incredible. I think he is most important player to our team. So if the Hawks were to go on a magic run and finish 1 in the NFC (around 14-3) I think he should be considered!

The MVP comment was merely a wild, not likely scenario in order to make a point. Not a prediction.

Yeah … I don’t think it is crazy though. The hawks would probably need to get the 1 seed. If that happens I definitely think SD is in the convo

I think the interesting question would be if JSN would be the winner if things stayed the same? Only 3 non QBs since 2001 but one of them was Shaun Alexander

One of the biggest reasons I always gave for not going after Hendrickson was JSN and Spoon. Hendrickson would cost at least $35 million APY. I’ve been a huge proponent if taking an EDGE in round 1 of the draft. This draft does not look like a great QB draft at the moment. (Everything can change) Burt Todd McShay just came out with his early big board and said the deepest position is EDGE. He has 7 in his top 32 released today.

Wow … I like that tidbit of info! Would be very happy to draft an edge.

Also, on the fence about Trey but you make good points

Those in favor of a trade for him should root for the Bengals to lose this week and next. I don’t think they will trade if they feel they can get Burrow back and still have a shot at making the playoffs. It’s way too early for these big boards to mean anything, but I’m with you, I’d love for a high quality edge to be there when the Hawks are on the clock.

I don't normally look at the boards this early. Do you think they reflect positional depth (per my comment above or below or wherever it falls) at this stage in the season? Or is that assumption/guess wrong?

I don’t get involved too much in the draft during the season either, and don’t start my big board until the Senior Bowl. But Todd McShay says he sees the EDGE group in its draft as solid at the top. He has 7 edges in his top 32 big board he released today. That’s an impressive number of edges, however that could drastically change come after the combine.

Yeah, PFF has 16 in the top-100 right now. Feels a bit like TE did last year, only more so.

Hendricksons pay day is likely 1-2 years separated from JSN and Witherspoon. Championship teams often pay outside stars, similar to the Eagles and AJ Brown or the Chiefs and their OL. This is not me saying that I care if the Seahawks trade for Hendrickson but I haven’t seen any reason to believe that they can’t afford him and the rest of their roster.

Danno's avatar

I get it. I just don’t like the cost/benefit of a top edge, and many times the last team to give an older player a contract winds up with the biggest pay day hit in declining years. I’m still seeing people hoping for a trade for him. I believe you’ve mentioned it’s highly unlikely, and I think you’re right. From what I see, the Bengals are hopeful they can stay in the chase until they get QB1 back. Trading Hendrickson would make that less likely.

The second half of this season will definitely determine how eager John is to break out the checkbook. While I love this Seahawks roster more than any in close to a decade, I hope we don’t end up signing bad contracts to try and keep every key contributor - there will always be value deals to be had. Could be a very quick way to ruin the rebuild the Hawks have been building since the first time they traded away their washed up veteran QB…

Definitely agree. Luckily I think the key players are under contract through next year at least so plenty of leverage.

I’m guessing Ouzts will be back on the roster, and as a vested vet, they can re-sign Saubert to the practice squad and he doesn’t have to clear waivers. He’s free to sign with anyone, but he probably wants to stay with the Hawks. They probably worked it out before they actually “cut” him.

Expand full comment
Seaside Joe's avatar

Speculation is just that Saubert won’t leave and the team can keep someone else by opening a roster spot, maybe if Ouzts is activated.
