I can't talk myself into this one. I like everything about Kupp except for his price tag.
I'm sure JS has budgeted it all out and made it make sense, but you never know what opportunities you might have with cap room at this point in the season. It's not the most egregious thing and certainly sends a positive message to the other players, but it's a high price to pay for good vibes, in my opinion.
It has been well over a decade since I went to Hong Kong, but my wife and I still talk about that trip. I agree with Andy Campbell... try to make it to the horse racing at Sha Tin. It is insane! We took trips to the Southern District, took the ferry across to the Kowloon district, shopped the central district riding the escalators, and took the tram up to Victoria Peak.
JSN, Horton, Barner, Arroyo, Shaheed, RB'S and a draft pick to be named later...that's a lot of mouths to feed. Love me some Kupp and wet don't need him to do a ton anyways, just come through in the clutch.
Have a great time in Hong Kong. I was just there for a couple of days the week before the Super Bowl and it's got a lot of potential. We could have used more time, that's for sure. Enjoy!!
I lived in Japan twice and traveled around South Korea, but I’ve never been to Hong Kong. It’s still one of my bucket list destinations.
If you’re not into taking pictures, then my advice is do not take pictures guilt free. I used to kick myself into taking photos (I still didn’t take many), and 25 years later, I look at the pictures and can’t remember anything about the location.
If you are the kind of person who enjoys taking photos, by all means take pictures. 😄
Honestly, were Pete still around I would be decently concerned: I truly respect and value all he did for this franchise, but it always seemed to me that he was the driving force behind re-signing aging players for more than their onfield value. The noticeable changes in such strategy once he left only made me more convinced of this take. John seems - thankfully - significantly more pragmatic, and if he thinks it's worth letting Kupp's contract mature than I trust there's a plan.
Enjoy the break and time with the missus, you've more than earned it!
What it comes down to is it doesn’t matter if we think Kupp’s intangibles are worth $17 million. It whether John Schneider and Mike McDonald think so, and apparently they do.
I don’t look at season statistics for him. The team’s not paying him so much for his week 1 through 17 performance. It his playoff performance. Like SSJ mentioned, no one but Kupp (and JSN) makes that sideline catch. Not Shaheed, not Bobo, not Barner, not anyone else.
An offensive play call has multiple routes, some of which may be to pull defenders in certain directions to open up areas for other routes and there is usually a progression to the play. If everything goes perfect the first route in the progression gets the ball, but different defenses are going to obviously result in different decisions by the QB. I know basics but I feel like Fantasy Football and it's need to count stats have impacted how skill players are graded. There also seems to be this dichotomy of if one WR gets the ball the majority of the time (the Stafford Method) the other receivers are not getting as many touches but are blocking, running clearing routes etc. helping the production of the number one WR the media may start questioning (what if they shut down Puca or JSN blah blah blah) If the QB spreads the ball around the media will start to complain that "they don't have a number one WR" nonsense. I get in some cases or teams there may be nobody getting seperation but we can't have it both ways. The best offenses keep everyone engaged because they all play a part and understand their role If only there was no cap.......
My theory is JS has a most-viable Budget laid out and Kupp has been accounted for. I can see him taking the vacant RB coach's budgeted salary and applying it to Kupp's efforts as regards his teaching skills. If MM assigns all his guys as 'tools' or 'weapons', Kupp would fit into both categories. Probably relieves the Budget, overall. I believe it is worthy of noting that Walker began showing real improvement after the RB Coach leaving mystery. Charbs, too. It may be the O-Line began earning their money about then. Still makes me wonder...
Looking at that list of receivers and their salaries it would be extremely easy to make an argument that wideouts are highly overpaid. The 2 best wideouts weren't even on the list and most of them didn't make the playoffs, including the top 5.
As someone who wasn't the greatest athlete I'm a big fan of intangibles. Kupp's a winner, obviously the Seahawks see the value even though he didn't light up the stat sheet this season.
I say we draft em. Don't overpay in FA or signing our own guys. Let's keep taking shots on WR in draft. There's so many more that these kids are in flag and passing leagues in addition to playing regular season. These guys are getting better and better with all reps.
Could Kupp still retire? Could he voluntarily still take pay cut? I like having him around but the money is a factor. I bet we draft a WR...or have a priority UDFA. This draft seems so wonky with analysts rankings...they have even less predictable rankings than last year.
Kupp admitted on the Kelce's podcast that the formation was flipped by accident on the play, and that he had to adjust his route post-snap or he would have run right into A.J.. It was a heady vet play like DLaw's drop into coverage of Kyren Williams in the NFCCG. Sick play!
Maybe it doesn’t make sense to keep Kupp at $17 million, but as a fan, I am glad he will be back. although I do wish it wasn’t so costly. I can’t find it now, but I read somewhere yesterday that there was a gentleman’s agreement with JS that if he was healthy, Kupp would get a 2nd year in Seattle. Maybe it doesn’t make sense dollar wise, but JS is sticking to is word.
Janocko is interviewing in LV today, so he’s surely gone if he’s not the Seahawk’s pick for OC. I still think Janock stays with the Hawks if they give him the job. He’s still my personal favorite for the job. From all that I could read, he checks every box except play calling duties. The QBs love him and he’s the one working with Milroe on his development. Kubiak wants him to work with his rookie QB. The O-line committee is also very high on Janocko and speak of his play designing skills, which he devises for the Hawks to use against opposing defenses. They believe the Barner TD play in the Super Bowl was a Janocko play. He’s heavily steeped in the wide zone scheme, and at some point we need to find out how well he calls plays. Maybe they go with Outten, and if so, that’s awesome. I trust the JS/MM combo to make the right choice. We should know in a few days.
Yep! In JS/MM we trust. He must have come off as better than any of the internal choices that looked as if they were the front runners. Love to see how he works with Barner and Arroyo. Kittle speaks very highly of him. Plus, I’ve seen videos of him talking football, and he speaks very well. He’s worked with Benton before, so perhaps Benton was a factor in speaking up for him.

HK is a great place , if you get the chance get yourself to Sha Tin for racing on Sunday ( Queens Cup day ) its a blast , energy is off the charts :)

Wonder if this is a hedge against Shaheed going to Oakland [sic] for the benjamins.

I'm liking Bobo on this one. Bring him in out of the weeds, next year! He's an untapped resource. The secret juice in plain sight.
How dare you say Jake Bobo wouldn't have made that catch? Maybe even my man Anthony Bradford would have made that catch.

Can't have a movie with all lead actors...everyone has to play a part in order for it to work.

Um, no. Just no.
Enjoy a well deserved vacation! I’ve never been to Hong Kong so no advice for you.
Apparently Brian Fleury from SF is going to be the new Hawks OC. Something of a surprise, but someone from the Shanahan system.
Thanks!
Old Filth (Gardham). “Filth” is an acronym: Failed In London, Tried Hong Kong
Suggest 'Tai Pan' by Clavell, if books are still being read. All his stuff is good. Gives you a feel for the people and area (pre-China).

Top receivers are almost all young bucks..

He just came up the brightest when it counted the most.

The Film Watchers guy did a short video on how the Hawks set up the Patriots to think the Barner TD was going to be a run.

Seems like a student of the game… very priceless.
