I’m with you SJ in terms of the defense. Yes Reed did look at times but Jones said he could stop the run and then was pushed around. Bush made some tackles but after gains made. Defense is not looking well.

Kentavius, can you please break down that pass to jsn? How did he see it and how was it placed so perfectly?

Hilton Alger’s is highly entertaining to watch. He most likely won’t make the roster, but it’s fun watching him.

Damn auto correct. Holton Ahlers.

I suspect KJ Wright went camping in Mike Jackson's head after his trade comments focused on MJ for an IDL player, especially when he dropped the inside-baseball observation that Coaches will protect their vouching for their recommended draft picks, opting to lose a Free Agent over 'their guy'. That would just worm its' way in and nag, nag, nag. A primal motivator for all human beings is first looking for a sense of Belonging. MJ's performance went up as he secured his 'place' on the roster. KJ blew that sense of belonging all to hell. Maybe I just wish to help a guy up when he's down. So that brings up Holton Ahlers: no doubt Staff had to script him some plays quickly. Ken is right to say we've seen Lock has proven himself to us, so let's switch gears and play Ahlers. What? 2 days notice? It looked like they actually ran the same play twice, with the first pass dropped. (was it Young?) The second try worked. I also believe I saw a play designed for the left side flipped to the right side, soon after. (this would double the number of scripted plays). Or maybe I should keep my observations to myself and continue absorbing the knowledge you folks are passing along to me... must be that 'belonging' thing...

JSN looks incredible

And the way Lock put it right over his shoulder?! That's gotta be a timing thing unless JSN has eyes on the back of his head!

I felt so bad for that Cowboy player that JSN burned into a smouldering cinder on that long reception that nearly went to the house. JSN was looking over his shoulder practically begging for the ball for what looked like 10 yards and the Cowboy player was struggling so hard to cover him he couldn't even get his hands up. Good on that guy for eventually tackling him short of the goal line but that looked like it was more about the way JSN cut his route back inside, giving the Cowboy player just enough time to make up the distance on him.

Was it just me or did it look Waldron pulled a real play out of the book on that 1st down Bobo had off play action along the sideline? That looked way too tasty to be strictly vanilla.

Holton Ahlers is hugely entertaining, but he always looks a bit out of control. He makes me long to see another Carolina QB in a Seahawk uniform to show him how it should be done.

Ahlers seems like he has the talent but needs the proper training/coaching

After JSN caught the post from Lock I was literally yelling at the TV to take him out. Bobo is making the game day roster and may shockingly be the number 4 receiver. Pete and John were right Drew Lock is better than any QBs coming out last year and would start in Atlanta, Washington, and Pittsburgh. The defense at times was undisciplined which allowed some gash runs where defenders ran themselves out of the pay. DJ Dallas is fighting to stay on the team. Without Diggs and Woolen the secondary is well below average. A lot of emphasis on man coverage which strikes me that what they are looking to find out during preseason is who the 5 and 6 (nickel and dime) DBs are.

Lock looks a lot better this preseason than he did last year, and he had some great sequences last August. I am buying into the Bobo hype after last night but I do this to myself every year with some preseason superstar, so I will temper my expectations.

Regarding special teams, if I were a GM I would regularly look at top special teams coaches for promotions. When you think about what a good s.t. coach does--work with what he’s got (including third stringers), organize efficiently so there are no personnel mistakes, and motivate to the point of taking guys heads off with huge hits yet playing smart enough to know where you are on the field at all times--those are all things a head coach should do.

In fact, sometimes head coaches known for being gurus on their side of the ball can get lost on that side, micromanage, and lose sight of the bigger picture. Delegating and overseeing, ultimately leading, is more important than the X’s and O’s for the h.c.

From memory, I believe only John Harbaugh has been elevated from a special teams spot to head coach, although there may have been others who started with special teams and moved to another side of the ball. I suspect Izzo would be very good as a head.

I think Joe Judge was the only other ST coordinator to go directly to HC (along with Harbaugh) but Belichick and Bill Cowher both did time as ST coordinators before eventually becoming HC. ST coordinator really is a unique coaching role on NFL teams. They have to work with whatever they can get their hands on but they coach players from position groups on both sides of the ball, including starting OL (minus the Center).

How do you spell effort, energy, want to? LEVI BELL! I just want to see more of him on the playing field. Also very impressed with Drew Locke. Sarodrick is fun to watch. I think the Cowboys offense exposed our weaknesses. A lot of very good stuff though. Oh boy, that cut down is gonna be very interesting... and that's how I see it. Thanks SSJOE!😊

I recall saying that Boya was being slept on, but no more! Boye made a statement out there. Nice to see Tre have a good bounce back from the first game--he looked focused out there. Just give me Mo' Bobo! JSN--mm mmm mmmmm that kid is something to see.

Reed has some great plays early also. The TEs had some nice plays---all three of them.

I will wait to be overly concerned with the D until we see the full starting group in Week 1. The front 7 will be very different once Jones is out there with Bobby behind him.

Someone who did not have a good game: Dareke Young.

Jones was out there, and on the first two snaps (running plays) was blown clean backwards, as was Reed to a lesser extent. Our DTs could be horrible liabilities against the run, but it’s preseason and they are rusty so let’s just hope things improve and it isn’t a repeat of 2022.

Following along with SSJ's 'as I see if'.....As I see it, if Spoon gets healthy (pretty please get healthy!), both Brown and Jackson may be watching from the sideline quite a bit. It's nice to know you've got two capable players behind him, but I'd be surprised if Jackson or Brown are overall better options. Although, Pete seems pretty loyal to Jackson, so that would be a touch call for him I think.

D Hall is coming. He just needs time, that's all. But he's coming. He will make plays this season. Mistakes too no doubt, but big plays are coming like a freight train. The guy just looks like a warrior.

Giving Jackson the benefit of the doubt but I have little doubt (beyond not seeing him play in preseason) that Witherspoon can't dethrone either once healthy. I don't think it will be a tough call for Pete, his enthusiasm for Witherspoon is stratospheric.

It’s so goddam frustrating to be gashed again and again by 2nd teamers, yet again. Been this way since Carroll arrived. I was reminded of his “it’s not how you start, it’s how you finish” mantra and I’m kinda resigning myself to slow starts again. Is it cultural?

Super disappointed in Mike Jackson. That wasn’t Cee Dee Lamb out there...looked slow and late.

I guess Devin Bush played. Or someone wearing his number was out there I think? Man, Seattle REALLY needs Bobby Wagner out there.

Both Geno and Drew looked pretty good I thought, esp juxtaposed with Ahlers. Looks so much like a college QB. Guess we don’t have anyone else at this point but really, what’s the point of him being out there. He’s going to clear waivers easily. We need to find a better QB3/practice squad guy.

Drew Lock does have a tantalizing arm -- saw it a couple times and man it makes you salivate. But Geno even without as much success just feels like the better QB. Can see the “Lock temptation” though.

Boye Mafe is really impressive, best defender on the field for either team yet again. And Derrick Hall is showing too. Along with Uchenna and Taylor, Seattle may have that 50+ sacks team that is so important in a passing league. Exciting.

We didn’t see Walker or DK; Wags or Brooks or Diggs or Weatherspoon. So there’s a lot of upside still, that’s good news.

Guess I’m a B- on this win (agree special teams looks like a strength, otherwise a C+), still worried we’re too soft on defense, and can’t pull off a screen to save our lives.

Expand full comment

All Ahlers did was have100 yard plus offense game!

As Kenneth likes to point out there are fewer than 32 starting quality QBs in the league. Beyond that I would say there less than 10 back ups, who if they have to go in the season is not over. I just don’t expect much from the QB3. Brock Purdy is an outlier.

"Been this way since Carroll arrived." The run defense has been bad for a long time, so I can see how one might overstate the duration of the current sad situation we're in, but this team had an incredible run defense for multiple seasons after Pete Carroll arrived. Talent left and it's been a long slog ever since, which is frankly a major mark against him, but give the man his due for that LOB. They kept a lot of punters busy for years.

Expand full comment
founding

So just to confirm if it's just my impression, or if most/all Carroll games are slow-starting, I went to Football Database and looked at every season since 2010 when Carroll arrived. In how many did he win the 1st quarter vs winning the games? In only one season did Seattle win as many 1st qtrs as they did games -- 2021, when they won 8 1st qtrs but only 7 games. In every other season including (and especially) the 2013-2014 Super Bowl teams, Seattle finished strong but started out soft. 2013: won 11 1st qtrs and 16 games -- the other 5, they were either tied or trailing after 1 qtr. And in 2014, won 8 1st qtrs but 14 total games -- so in 6 games they were either tied or trailing after 1. In total including the playoffs, since 2010 Seattle has won 93 1st qtrs but has won 140 total games. So, I guess two things are true:

- it's not how you start, it's how you finish

- buckle up for more frustratingly soft starts to games, just like we've been seeing this preseason

Did y'all ever see Premium Rush? JG-L's character (Wiley) would giggle every time he lived through something improbable on his bike.

That's the sound I hear Ahlers making after every snap. In my head, that is. But maybe that's just me.

Let me be clear. He is not snapping in my head. I hear the sound in my head.

On the other hand, it looked like some of his decisions were suspect. Too much glory-seeking when he had open receivers shorter. Also, I thought his accuracy wasn't too good downfield.

And I'd really like to know what Bobo did to get PC so exercised. I missed it while watching on my phone.

Cut down at RB, DB, WR looks like it might be pretty tough.

That Bobo flavored gum Pete had in that play was mysterious to me, too. It was right after their guy got the taunting penalty against Bobo. As I recall, the pass was behind Bobo, but the Mikes were saying it was to protect him from a hit. Maybe Pete wanted him to make more effort on the ball? IDK, but I hope someone asks in a press conference.

Expand full comment

It was a quick split second cut showing Pete yelling at Bobo. Pete's face looked like a parent scolding his child, or a coach admonishing his player. Nobody in the broadcast booth caught it. I was hoping someone would have mentioned it because it's not often you see Pete with such a stern face at someone. Even though the taunting was called on the Cowboy, Bobo was seen turning his head and saying something back. Looked like it could have gone either way, but the Cowboy was the one who got penalized. I think this goes to Pete just not having any tolerance for anything unsportsmanlike. He's all about playing clean, not resorting to any tactics beyond good football, and being classy. His team culture reflects his persona, which we all know very well. The KJ Wright podcast with Golden Tate some weeks ago illustrates why he laid into Bobo. Golden said that when they played the Rams in a slugfest 10 years ago, he scored the only TD in that game. As he was running in for the score, he stuck his arm out towards his pursuer and gave him a big taunting goodbye wave with his hand. We all remember that one, right?! The score stood, but I think he did draw a taunting penalty for that. When he came back to the sideline, he said that Pete was furious with him. That's not how you play the game he said. In spite of the touchdown, you just don't do that shit. Golden said he had never seen Pete so pissed off ever before. Taunting is something that dips into the spectrum of one's personality that is the asshole area. Players like Ndamukong Suh and certain coaches dip more into that spectrum and it shows up in team culture and players. It's also a reflection of a lack of discipline, which means that there is a lack of mindfulness in your choices. That is, to choose to be a dick instead of choosing to be gentlemanly. That's not what Pete is about at all. Even if the outcome is positive and winning, he won't put up with such behavior.

I initially though the taunting call was going to be on Bobo, so maybe Pete saw what I saw and was not happy.

Because I'm curious...and don't really want to get started on chores...

The play started with 10:13 left in the 2nd. Thomas' (30) body English pretty strongly suggests that he had a thing or two to say to Bobo: after the play, his head is level, then (as Bobo approaches) he tilts it as if thrusting out his chin in Bobo's direction. Bobo turns his face in Thomas' direction and "braces" his elbows while he squares off at Thomas. The camera cuts away.

The whole thing happens right in front of the down judge. It looks like the flag didn't get thrown for 5 or 6 seconds. The DJ was trailing after Thomas looking like he meant business.

The whole thing happened across the field from Seahawks coaches so it is possible that PC was uncertain about who got called. But if he could see the DJ when the flag was thrown then I don't think he could have been confused.

The only words I could lip-read with any certainty were PC's last ones. I'm pretty sure they were "don't have time for that stuff". Everybody in earshot appeared to be carefully looking away, except for (I think) Christian Young, who had that "Pops is whupping ugly on you" expression before he pretends to stop paying attention.

Anyway, it was fun. Overtly happy guys can be really scary when they cut their temper loose. My immediate predecessor as Idiot Supreme was like that...everybody always used to scatter when they saw it coming. Even the guys that worked for him used to talk about it.

Not when he was around, of course.

"could just as easily have been called on you" would make sense. Especially after experiencing D (cough cough) K (cough cough) learning that lesson.

I think Tre Brown got better as the night went on. His blown coverage gave the Cowboys their 1st TD, and he may, or may not, have gotten away with illegal contact on that INT (I thought so, but I didn't see the replay and someone else commented that he was just standing his ground, either way, glad it wasn't called). But, he looked better than Jackson. Mike Jack did not look good. Like another Seasider commented last week, he did seem to not have the quickness to keep tight to his assignments; in man, especially. Middle LB play was spotty. O'Connell played pretty well, I thought, but Rhattigan and BBK were chasing plays from behind, too much. Devin Bush did OK for his little time played, but he doesn't jump off the screen. Mafe does! Wow! He was problems.

Overall, I feel better than last week, but not comfortable, yet. Still need better tackling.

What did y'all think?
