Cuts will be brutally difficult, especially going from 60 to 53. It's such an emotional day for the players, with some elated at making the team, and some really sad at not making the cut, despite all the work they put in.
I don't have many thoughts about it, other than I don't know how you can cut Bobo given his production in the preseason and in camp as both a WR and his play on ST. I mean, I haven't noticed Young at all, but I remind myself often I'm not a coach, so may miss the nuances of the game.
Still not sold on the d-line yet, so even after we get to 53, I expect there will be changes, so players on the fringe of the roster shouldn't get overly comfortable for a week or two.
Bobo , a bigger verson of Steve Largent, is teciever #4., 5 and six up for grabs. I think Eskridge has run out of chances. Bell has played himself onto the roster as a Swiss army knife.
After what happened to the Niners ,Ahlers is QB 3. And with the atrition at RB ,Thompson is #5.
Micheal Jackson may be a trade canditate. Still need an other nose tackle.
I can't believe how many good players will be cut and claimed by other teams. A great problem to have!
As leftie, Ahlers presents certain problems for a D. With Ahlers in the backfield and Geno under center, Geno could survey the field and if there is a left side weakness, call the pitch to Ahlers in motion to his left. Ahlers has a RPO (either keep or throw). Or Geno fakes then hits DK or JSN moving against the left motion. This would be ... fun.
I know long-snapping is considered a specialized skill, but I don't qutte get why they just don't teach Olu² how to long-snap, and save a roster spot to use elsewhere. Is it THAT special of a skill? I mean, snap to shotgun and use 2 hands for double distance. What am I missing? I don't hear of long-snappers getting injured at a high rate, or anything, so is there some other reason they use a roster spot for just that skill, when it is fairly close, mechanically speaking, to another job on the team?
My guess is that, when used, long snapping so key that it must be done right 99.9999999% of the time and therefore merits being a specialty. I.e., you don’t want the guy ever thinking about anything else and you want his compensation tied 100% to long-snapping.
It is not just snapping the ball, though the longs snapper has to be a bit of a qb here and hit his receiver in the hands 7 and 10 yards away in the hands while throwing the ball between his legs. Long snapper then becomes a coverage position on punts and on field goals if the kick short. The long snapper is responsible for the middle of the field. A long snapper goes from center to middle linebacker once the ball leaves his hands. 6 2 plus 250 lb guy who runs a 4.6.
If Young drops another pass he will be packing and hoping he is on the PS. Bobo is ahead of him for sure and Young is in deep against the other bubble receivers I would think.
As much as we all love Bellore... a replacement for him at both FB and LB will be on the roster and is he enough of a pressence on ST to justify keeping over other options? I am still Torn about him.
I hope you're wrong with Dareke. I just have a feeling that he can be a pretty good gadget player for Offense and ST. But yeah maybe you are right and he is no real NFL WR.
Yeah he seemed to be coming on at the end of the season last year, but the competition at WR is just that much stronger this year. Dropping catchable passes in the preseason puts out tape that isn't in his favor.
There are likely guys whom Carroll would like to cut because they are known (mediocre) quantities who have made the team in past because of contract status or because there was no good alternative. Burr-Kirven, Forsyth, and Hunt each come to mind. Numbers-game victims like Artie Burns and late-round draft picks that the team took a flyer on would be next. Finally would be players who Pete doesn’t see as contributing to a team with aspirations to make a deep playoff run, even as practice players. Only he and the coaching staff have a feel for who they might be.
Also, if they can, I look for them to trade a DB or two for a future draft choice.
At the risk of being a bit obtuse...you have to get from 87 down to 50, 'cause the kickers & long snapper are not on the bubble (or anywhere near anything that looks like it might be mistaken for a bubble).
Furthermore, I see 17 on offense as pretty well "saucered and blown", and another 16 on defense. Therefore, about 36 "low-hanging fruit" to make the 53.
That suggests that the actual job is more like cutting ~54 down to ~17. Looking at your tabulations, I think that job gets easier in the context of depth behind the 36 that are "easy" to keep. It probably gets even easier (still not easy) if you further consider special teams (in addition to the kickers and LS)...many of the low-hanging fruit are players you'd never want to risk gunning.
Either way, you'd have to be pretty ruthless.
There isn't enough time left this year, but it would be nerdy-fun to do a carefully-designed survey to see how close our collective opinion is to that of the coaches. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delphi_method and (my personal favorite implementation) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Analytic_hierarchy_process. Done poorly, that stuff is a colossal waste of time. Done well, the results can be remarkable (and, sometimes, unexpected).
I’ve loved BBK since his Husky days. He has a high football IQ and non stop motor, but not quite NFL sized physique. A combo of him and Barton, from the same draft class, would be a really good LB, best traits from each, of course. BBK’s return from gruesome injury is inspiring, but I suspect he can be safely cut without being picked up on waivers and then go to practice squad or just float around in limbo until an injury, suspension, poor play, etc. make his service valuable again.
I hope Dareke has been performing well in practices. He really hasn't done anything in the games that I have seen. How safe is he? Maybe Pete goes with Cody or Cade over him in addition to Bobo? O'Connell looked good to me last night. He played downhill and was quick to the ball, moreso than Rhat or BBK. Wondering about him sneaking on to the roster. As Edge starts to look deeper with Tyreke playing so well, maybe Bell gets cut and we keep O'Connell or 1 more DB (Sutherland AND Reed), because of the injuries there?
It is REALLY tough, and I don't see these people in person, like Pete and John do. I can't imagine how hard it is for them to tell someone to their face. I never liked firing people, and I didn't have to tell them their dreams just hit a(nother) snag. It is a good problem to have for the team, though. Good luck and good vibes to all involved.
Yeah this is the most stacked Hawks roster I've seen in almost 10 years(and we know how good we were back then with many hawks being cut and then starting on other teams)...makes me wish there was more time/situations to evaluate some of these guys🤷♂️

His stellar play notwithstanding, Jake Bobo makes the final 53 because he has a really cool football name.
You just have a soft spot for Bobo because you are one "o" away from having the same name
...and because the Woodland Park Zoo would put him up for free.

I would love LOVE LOVE to see Ahlers line up as a RB behind Lock next week.
I had him at QB 3 and RB 5
That reminds me when the Ravens lined up Lamar Jackson, RG3, and Mark Ingram.

Overall, I think I'd rather see K9 or Charbonnet throw a pass.
Your puns make me groan and laugh at the same time. That takes Talent.
I thought Koback might be an option if the Seahawks were going to keep a 5th back but Thomposon looked very good last night.
Regardless, isn't the first cut the hardest to make? It certainly is the deepest...

It isn't the cuts that catch my attention, but the storm that follows: https://youtu.be/0qlyJpWdpZ0
The only way I can get to 53 is to pick the 53 that will make it, then the practice squad. The rest are cuts. But easier said than done huh.
Actually, I think that's the rightmost way to approach it. "Build a team", not "discard players".

Pretty good question. Do we have some former longsnappers here?

Nice to know. Thanks Charlie.
I wonder if Levi Bell has done enough to make Nick Bellore expendable. Plays LB and FB, plus special teams.
Bobo seems to be doing everything to take Dareke Young’s spot.
Sure glad I’m not the coach having to make the cuts. I anguished enough over trying to get to 65, let alone to 53.
Not impressed by Young so far.

Or a vet NT.
What are we seeing from Stone Forsyth that keeps him off anybody's cut list?
I expect there are 31 teams drooling in the background waiting to see who becomes available.
