I am confident in MM to make that decision and how he will use him. If he survives to the regular season, they will have a plan for him and the decision of if he stays or goes will be made on what he does during the upcoming year.
Spot on assessment. I was initially enamored with DT, but the injury his first year really set him back on the development side. It can also be said that, with the exception of Boye Mafe, the D-Line coaches didn't really draw out any of the potentiality of the D-linemen drafted in the past 5 years. Hopefully its the combination of Mike Mac's productive scheme coupled with Arden and Co's good fundamentals that really start bring out the potential in guys like Taylor and Hall.
They didn't develop and keep a front 7 talent since Bobby and KJ. Reed and Clark both left. Mafe has been one dimensional in each of his two seasons, but in opposite directions. I don't think the Seahawks coaches after the SB years have done a good job with front 7 players.
If he only plays on obvious passing downs and he gets double digit sacks, he's a bargain this year. If the new D scheme plays to his strength and he finally lives up to his potential, keep him at a reasonable price or trade him. Pass rush only specialists are easy to find!
Ever since John re-signed DT I've been curious why. Was it because the coaches see the current edge personnel as a weakness, and weren't willing to let someone able to generate pressure (on occasion) walk away? Was it because they thought the issue with edge setting and consistency was between his ears, and something they could potentially fix? Was it simply because John wasn't willing to let a 2nd round draft pick he traded up for walk away without giving the new coaching staff a crack at him? Did he go to John and say, give me one more shot?
I never expected them to resign him. He's had a few years to improve and he really hasn't. His sack totals are decent, but his pressure rate is poor, so his overall impact on the game isn't significant. Add to that his poor run defense and undisciplined play at times, and I'm a tad flummoxed as to the reason to continue the experiment. Whatever the reason for bringing him back, I hope it works out. He has all the tangibles to be a really good player.
I think it's just a value assessment. Because he was a restricted free agent, John was able to keep him for one more season at a low-risk price. As you say, he has all the tangibles, he's an athletic freak, he's got experience and has avoided injury. You can't find those traits at edge for $3 million in free agency. If he sucks in the preseason and some UDFA shines, then he's expendable and it only cost you $20,000 to find out.
I remember that Cam post and wholeheartedly agreed with him. I was not a huge fan of MB but he was one of those types. Big Red more of a run stuffer but owned half the field and took away plays allowing KJ and BWagz to make plays. I prefer guys like Cam and Graham and Hayward. Missed having the Cliff Avril 4 down guys.

If I recall, it seems down linemen for hire were at a premium last year. Maybe we're setting up his marketability?
